How to write down goals for maximum effect?

Hi Warriors,

After spending some time in this forum it has become apparent that creating goals and writing them down can be very useful in helping to achieve success.

Can anybody point me towards some sort of guide or tutorial that explains how to do this properly. It would be most appreciated.

  • Here's a blueprint for writing goals down and achieving them

    1. Make a list of what you desire - cover all aspects of your life
    - Choose one you have most passion about.
    - Make it specific and precise (i.e. instead of writing "I want more money" write down "I want to be doing $10,000 a month" or instead of "I want to get a huge list of subscribers" write "I want 100,000 subscribers".)
    - Change its form to mandatory one, it should be an order: "I will be doing $10,000 a month" or "I will have 100,000 subscribers on my opt-in list"
    2. Make a timetable for this desire.
    Specify a time limit or deadline for your goal fulfillment. Just determine for yourself the concrete date you want this goal to be achieved. I.e. "By December 31, 2009 I will be doing $10,000 a month" or "On January 01, 2010 I will have 100,000 subscribers on my opt-in list"
    3. Explore all resources available to you that may facilitate your goal achievement and split you main goal into a series of sub-goals, steps that lead to the main goal fulfillment - and again, make them precise and with the deadlines.
    I.e. you may split you goal with subscribers into the following steps:
    a) October 01 - I will have the first 1,000 subscribers
    - September 15 - My e-mailing follow-up system shall be running smoothly
    ..... (write your steps for it to be completed)
    - September 20 - I will get in contact with 1 person to make cross-promotion
    - ... (continue yourself - the idea is clear, isn't it?)
    b) November 01 - ... (so on)
    Thoroughly examine as much as you can about the ways to fulfill your goal. And stick to your own way - you may not succeed but you'll learn so very much that the experience will be priceless.
    4. Always have your goals at hand - in a notebook, desktop of your laptop or likewise so you can often look at them. One of my friends used to stick sheets of paper with the goal for this day on her fridge among other messages so every time she looked at the fridge this sheet reminded her of her goal.

    5. Continue working on the steps to your main goal. Each day plan specific actions that are needed to make your current step in the queue.

    6. Choose another desire from your list and work with it the same way, then another and another. Be persistent, patient and... flexible. Sometimes with time it turns out that the goal you starved for months ago is not worth fulfilling.

    And may be the most important issue: NGU (Never Give UP!)

  • I like this post and the replies, it really helped a lot. A list of all the goals and having a time table will really work for me. It gives me a sense of fulfillment when I see the list with several check marks on it.

    • Another tip is to write your goals out as affirmations. Instead of "I want to be earning $10,000 a month by X" make it -- "I earn $10,000 a month". The reason is that your subconscious merely acts on the consistent order it's given. So if you tell yourself that "you want" something... your subconscious does it's best to keep you in that state of "wanting".

      But if you word your goal as a statement of fact and something that you're definitely moving towards, your subconscious complies and collaborates, to help you advance to the outcome that you've claimed as your own.

      It's also important to "feel" your way into it. You need to be able to see yourself in possession of that which you seek. Beliefs are important. When you first set a BIG goal, it can seem out of reach. But that's only the result of your preexisting internal conditioning. Setting your goal as an affirmation and repeating it over and over overcomes those limitations previously installed. When you KNOW heart and soul that what you want is in fact yours, that's when magic happens.

  • Excellent post, Sergey! Yes, feelings are VERY important. As visualization expert, Carole Dore says, "Feelings get the blessing". When you establish a target or goal and add those sensory-rich details of sight, sound, scent, taste and FEELINGS - your goal takes on a whole new perspective. It's not just a statement but a real experience.

    At first a goal can appear as little more than words on a page. But when you breathe life into it by imagining the result, feeling it fully and joyfully and assuming that it's already yours, without any doubt -- this simple statement becomes a powerful force that can shape your life in accordance to your desire.

    Repetition makes it believable. At first, as Sergey points out, goals are just a series of words like any other. But when they're repeated as powerful affirmations, they shape your reality. When it FEELS as though the physical manifestation of a goal is a natural and inevitable result, it usually is.

  • Writing your goals down can sometimes be difficult, especially if you are unsure about how to write goals that you can achieve. Remember the principles of setting specific, measurable, realistic, and timely goals and you can cut down on the generic goals you may be used to and start working with goals that are more motivating. All of the time and effort you put into writing your goals will result in a solid action plan that you can follow to achieve your goals and develop personal success.
