Hi all, I am fairly new to WF, I LOVE writing and connecting to people, and I am very into self development, being the best you can be, rising above your expectation of yourself, etc!

As I love writing, connecting to people, and marketing, IM seems to be the perfect way to make income, but for some time now having explored all different ways of doing this (e-books, affiliate, etc), I have increasingly felt the need/desire to produce something more substantial, more 'real' if you like, to build an ongoing relationship with people, not just sell them a product once or twice. (No disrespect to anyone who does this, its still very smart!).

I have been thinking of setting up a blog or membership site where-by I offer little glimpses into my (slightly insane) life (they should have filmed our house, not the Osbourne's!), and offer support and encouragement to others, but in a fun light hearted way, a wry look at life if you like! I am pretty blunt and to the point, and so far people seem to respond well to my style of 'talking'! Almost like 'the family you always wanted' kind of thing?

My question is, do you think there would be a market for this, and how the hell do I make a living from it?!! Because I can write for England (as you can see!), I never run short of ideas, but I just can't see how to monetize this unless I offer it as an email membership course or something (and I don't have a list)?

Please help me out here guys, tell me what I can do, as I know I would never ever get bored of writing about overcoming the crap in your life and reaching inside yourself to pull out your personal best! (Oh, no that does not sound right at all! But you know what I mean!!).

Any input/feedback would be gratefully received!

Thanks so much,

Shell

  • Sounds great, I researched into similar ideas but it will be really challenging to get people to pay if you are unknown. You need to either be a celebrity or have a list of people already that want to follow you etc. Obviously you could set this up and create an affiliate program and just do a bunch of jv's and others can sell it for you and you split the profit.
  • Thanks, Rockstar in life!

Well, obviously I am famous, I'm on WF aren't I?!! Seriously, thanks for that, I want to be able to create something that helps people overcome confidence issues and really believe in themselves, and really enjoy life, as we all should!

Any more feedback will be greatly appreciated folks!

    Thanks,

    Shell
  • Your welcome Shell and I am there with ya! And yes you are famous here on WF ;-)

  • Well, one thing for certain, NORMALACY does not sell. So you're one step ahead of some of us already! And blogging can pay off. Do you have a theme with keywords that fit? Is it a term that people search for? (no detail answers... keep your trade secrets!). Is it something you are willing to do out of fun or love for a time while you build some traffic and a list? Have you found any existing blogs running similar to your ideas and did you see what they are doing?

Once things start to gel, look towards branding a product based around it and then sell that product.

    • Webdesk, I laughed out loud at that! You have no idea..... I tried being normal for a week, after Thursday I was so bored I had to either shoot myself (twice, just to be sure!), or just be me! So me it is!!

That's really helpful, thank you so much!

    • Hi Mike,

Thanks for that, that's what I thought, and I can't be the only one buying up the personal development section at the Bookstore! I think a bit of hand-holding and someone to turn to is what we all need from time to time, and sometimes its easier to do that with someone you can't 'see'.

Will someone hold my hand please....! ...this is turning into a great thread!
  • Why not just start a Youtube channel and run your idea there to get started? This way you can build an audience and most of the traffic will be provided for you through Youtube. Connect your channel to your blog and direct traffic there where you can further monetize your content.

    • Ape23, that is a totally fabulous idea, thank you!! Since I am about as technical currently as a mouse (furry squeaking kind!), this would not have occured to me in a million years, but I can see it makes sooo much sense!

Fantastic! Thank you! And I'm still laughing about what Webdesk said!
  • Hi Shell,

These are great responses to your post.

Ape23's reply reminded me of that young Lady who is set to make millions because she shows young girls and women how to put on their make-up.

She filmed herself everyday on Youtube, and now has book signings, will be having her own show and was asked to go to the USA to appear on a chat show!

I cannot remember her name but if you google her, e.g.' Youtube Makeup girl' then you' ll see what I mean.

    She's also from the UK.

    All the best to you!

    • Thanks Jvsnow01,

I haven't heard of her, but what a brilliant idea, I will look it up! Shame she is in the UK, I could do that!

Thank you for all the amazing suggestions so far, its so great to be a part of a community like this, its like a giant hug from cyberspace!! (Bit more proof of lack of normalcy for Webdesk!).

But seriously folks, thank you so much for the input, keep it coming folks, this is really great!!
  • hi richgirl, Lauren Luke is the girl who gained 310,000 subscribers and 64,000,000 views on You Tube. What a great story that is! Not quite up there with Subo, but still great.

if you love your writing and it come easy, that's great. Sitting down to write is the hardest thing for some people, perhaps most.

    good luck

  • Hi Richgirl...

Interesting idea... These shows on television are popular these days... At least in my country...

I can not provide you the correct answer to that question... My opinion - You can make money from it, it has market, but you need to be very good... I think that, because I know that many people are attracted to similar shows, if they are performed well... Your market would be all the people who are looking for entertainment on the Internet, and that is a lot of people...

Of course, I'm not a producer, and I have not engaged in that business, so all this I talk as a personal opinion...You would have had to try to know whether there is potential for making money...

And for the financial side, there are always many ways to make money, if your site has a lot of visits, it is easy to experiment with ways of earning... But if you're not famous, I do not know whether you should charge people to watch it as members from start... I would not...

Finally, here's an useful article I've found.

    I wish you success... bye

  • Go to Youtube and take a look at some of the total nut jobs there trying to get noticed by being crazy. Some of the stuff you'll find is so outrageous it isn't (and is at the same time) funny. And these people aren't making any money from all their craziness, though they are trying like hell.

    • Hi, I think we may have our wires a bit crossed here, I'm not trying to create a 'reality tv show' (can't think of anything worse!), but a self development/motivational site that offers emotional support and positive encouragement to subscribers to be their personal best (similar to Tony Robbins but in a much more personal hand holding way).

I'm also definitely not talking about doing crazy 'stunts' (like jackass type things) - that is not me at all! I'm just saying that weird things seem to happen to me more often than most, and many people have said my life is like a soap opera (sad but true).

I totally agree that if something is too extreme it is no longer funny, but I am talking about the day to day random funny events of life, along with support and encouragement, which I think we all need from time to time...

Hope that helps clarify what I mean!

Thanks everyone for the great input so far!! :p
