What music motivates you?

After 10 years of making a comfortable living, 100% online, things are getting tough.

I found some old CD's and popped in Tom Petty. I listened to "I won't back down".

"you can stand me up at the gates of hell, but I won't back down"

Just what I needed to hear today!

What music inspires or motivates you?

  • Avril Lavigne "Tomorrow is another day",

I listen to it before I go to sleep, since it tells me that what you did today, if you had a bad day, tomorrow is another day, a brand new start, and you can do better than yesterday.

    • Isn't it Tomorrow?

      Lady gaga's songs rock.
      I love Telephone ft. Beyonce
  • Ha! Cool question...

It's tough though, so many possibilities. When it comes to fitness and weight-training, which really helps me have a power mindset for my whole life - surprisingly - I find that some of Eminem's tracks from 8 Mile, are awesome.

    From 8 Mile Road:

"Yo I won't tell no lie, not a moment goes by
That I don't pray to the sky, please I'm beggin you God
Please don't let me be pigeon-holed into no regular job

    ...

And it's cold, tryin to travel this road
Plus I feel like I'm on stuck in this battlin mode
My defenses are so up, but one thing I don't want
    is pity from no one"

    Lose Yourself:
"Look, if you had one shot, or one opportunity
To seize everything you ever wanted-One moment
Would you capture it or just let it slip?"

    AND THE BEST ONE...

    Till I Collapse:
"'Cause sometimes you feel tired... feel weak,
and when you feel weak, you feel like you wanna just give up.

But you gotta search within you...

You gotta find that inner strength and just pull that **** out of you and get that motivation to not give up and not be a quitter, no matter how bad you wanna just fall flat on your face and collapse."

There's so many others, but I'll leave it to other warriors to post. From day-to-day, as a Christian, there is nothing more motivating than worship and praisemusic - something I never thought I would be listening to.

    Thanks guys, all the best!
  • I love to just trow on my Last.fm account and groove out in my car or at work. I have my account listed here and you will see that rockabilly, alternative, indie rock are what inspires me.

  • I'm inspired by all music... just some music I'm inspired to turn off!
  • I like to listen to classical music when I need motivation! I listen to Indian Classical (Karnatic) as well as Western. My favourite is a raga called 'Kathana Kuthuhalam' which is a highly motivating & inspiring piece.

Otherwise, I get totally absorbed in the Blue Danube or Beethoven's Pastoral.

  • For creativity, all the greats in classical; Mozart, Bach, Vialvdi, etc...

I love to get up early in the morning and listening to their music while reading or writing.

  • pretty much anything Sean Costello, bluesy enough
to connect to the soul, not bluesy enough to make
me want to cry, awesome guitar solos,...

specific titles: "can't let go" or "check it out" (all on youtube)

another awesome funky/jazzy track is "Finest Flower" by
King Johnson (also on youtube) -- download this and play
in media player at 1.4 speed -- so funky you won't be able
to type anymore with all the finger-tapping/snapping....

  • I listen to Mozart when I'm writing as I find it helps my mind feel clear and doesn't distract me. It has to be just at the right volume though.
To pump up my energy before sitting down to write, I bounce around to the Black Eyed Peas - I gotta feelin'

Basically, I find anything that I just can't keep still to is going to get my physical and mental energy levels SOARING!
  • I always like this one. It's actually a music video call where the hell is Matt.

He just does a crazy dance and has a pretty cool song all over the world

    • Yeah!! Their songs are pretty catchy and you could even sing-along with those great lyrics..I think it's safe to say that Lennon-Mccartney are two of the best song writers in the history of music. Black sabbath, The Clash, Peter Frampton!! I grew up adoring those !!
  • It depends upon what I'm going to do. While exercising physically I prefer AC/DC or something like that, when I need to think over something I like to listen calm and relaxing music, when I want to dance I want to hear some club mixes, and when I'm nervous I like drum&bass. There is no bad music, there are bad situations for each kind of music.))

  • Totally agree that music can help work motivation. If anyone is looking for a little motivation or some new workout or running music,It's a great way to keep your energy levels high and can help you push harder than you would without tunes i love music during my work....
  • And if you can, playing your own music (i.e. playing an instrument or singing) is the perfect way to escape from the world. I literally think about nothing else when I'm playing, and I think it's a great experience.
  • So true, Ruth P! Whether you have musical talent, or like to run, or garden; whatever that activity that takes you to your "zone" is incredibly useful for clearing the mind and focusing on higher priorities. It's gets us back to our Integrity, from where all good things in life flow.
  • How about Sublime , Rush, or Police?
  • I used to be majorly into hardcore drum and bass, house, techno, the prodigy, orbital stuff like that! But now I prefer to chill and get inspired by own creations, being a musician myself!

Nothing more motivating and inspiring than making your own music!

    • to each its own... but nothing moves me more than oriental pop, esp. chinese & korean ( they come in english too)... and u know that pop was 1st introduced to asia by a black jazz & r&b singer? Now that brings wonders & amusement, because paradigms often shift every mid-century turn-mark. We thought they Chris Columbus was the 1st to land in the Americas, but actually, a shipwreck remains underground artifacts actually points to the Chinese being amongst the pioneers. Also they say AIDS or HIV originated from Africa, but they discovered that it appeared in the US 1 year before tourists brought it to Africa. Another thing is matter is made up of nothing.
(I know...i know... totally side tracked off topic... but you get the picture).

    • There are lots of music available. I like romantic and hip hop music. I am so romantic person. So Romantic music always motivates me. Because of when I listening romantic music at that time I only remember my love.
    • Fun question! Sometimes, I like the music from my high school days - when I knew all the words by heart!
I like old rock, dance, pop, and regaton (Have no idea how to spell that - it's like a latin rap or pop type song - fun and lively)
    • I love Stevie Wonder - Free,
      Another great one is R Kelly's - I believe I can fly.

And one of my favorites is "I got a millionaire mind - I say to success"

      Those are all very uplifting.

I wish you great success :-)
    • Jazz Music Motivates me.
    • I like songs that are about people that have overcome a change that have changed their life.

      Example Slim Shady 8 mile.
    • When I'm working I either listen to music with subliminal messages or a lot of classical: Beethoven, Mozart, Bach . . . etc.

If that doesn't do it for me, Apocolyptica is a band I can't get enough of. They've got something for every one of my moods and projects.
    • Eminem Not afraid
    • Rocky Soundtrack: "eye of the tiger" while shadow boxing in my room.
    • Classical music and any kind of instrumentals are very good for motivation. Even love songs will do.
    • Classic and sometimes love songs can motivate me..Well usually it depends on my mood.
    • Simple ballad musics make me inspire or songs of praise.

    • EPIC MUSIC! I enjoy listening to what I think is called trailer music.

      Two Steps From Hell
      E.S. Posthumus
      Epic Score
      Immediate Music
      etc.

I also like listening to movie scores.

      Hans Zimmer
      James Horner
      etc.

I like listening to these when I am writing. And pretty much when I'm doing everything else!

    • 'Lazy Sunday' by the Small Faces, demonstrates the British Invasion,

    • Any thing with a nice, fast paced beat that doesn't consist of "i'm so depressed so i am yelling in a microphone" for lyrics and no techno because all the beepy noises give me a head ache. That much leaves 80's music.
      • [1] reply
    • When setting out on a run try listening to James Blunt - it will make you run a bit faster - the earlier you finish the earlier you can turn that damn noise off. I think that Einaudi's The Waves is of the best for chilling out or cooling down.

  • Excellent topic as music is the force that inspirationally drives many people. Throughout my life there have been many a theme song I've latched onto for myself though as I've aged they've become less noisier and more mellow, lol. These days I can always pop in Reckless Kelly,"Wicked Twisted Road" as it so clearly mirrors the turbulent life I've lived and in a sort of reverse psychology makes me feel inspired from having survived through it all to fight on! If I am in the mood for an upbeat get me pumping song then a newer more Irish inspired sounding Reckless Kelly song,"Seven Nights in Ireland" does the trick quite nicely.
  • I think music motivates us when we have an association to it from a time when we was motivated! -- for that reason it's highly contextual.

But some of my favourites are (and popular 'shower' songs)

-- It's not unusual by Tom Jones -- who can forget the Calton dance?
-- Kung fu fighting -- I don't know why this motivates me, it just does
-- Kiss from a rose by Seal -- this is just such a beautiful song

When I'm working I only listen to classical -- lyrics distract me. The classical album I listen to is ''The Most Relaxing Classical Album In The World Ever''. -- really ..er.. relaxing...

  • If I need some strong emotional and mental energy, Metallica's "And Justice For All..." does it every time, but I prefer something from Queen to get the blood pumping, something like "The Hero" from Flash Gordon, or "Princes of the Universe" from A Kind Of Magic -- yeah!

  • Well it depends on my mood.. When i wan't to sleep i play love song.. When cleaning my house, i play rnb. But i love the eagles. debbie gibson, jann arden and ACDC.. Music makes my day complete.
  • Recently I've been listening to Switchfoot in the mornings... *really* listening to the lyrics (and I'm not even a 'lyrics person'). They have been very inspiring to me. Also when I'm feeling a bit down they motivate me to get up again.

In particular this song, "This Is Your Life":
YouTube - This is your Life by Switchfoot (with lyrics)"Yesterday is a wrinkle on your forehead, yesterday is a promise that you've broken."

"Don't close your eyes. This is your life and today is all you've got now. And today is all you'll ever have."

"This is your life, are you who you want to be? This is your life, is it everything you dreamed that it would be?"

    Brilliant!

Also, "I Dare You To Move":
YouTube - I Dare You To Move - Switchfoot with lyrics"Welcome to the planet. Welcome to existance. Everyone's here. Everybody's watching you now. Everybody waits for you now. What happens next? I dare you to move. I dare you to lift yourself up off the floor."

"I dare you to move like today never happened before."

"Welcome to the fallout. Welcome to resistance. The tension is here. Between who you are and who you could be. Between how it is and how it should be. I dare you to move."

They write a number of motivational songs ("Gone" is another favourite of mine). While they are a Christian band, you can interprete and take their lyrics however you see fit.
  • Wow music makes you alive and fresh, one of my favorite would be, Power of the Dream by Celine Dion and also I Believe I Can Fly by Robert Kelly
  • there are several songs that motivate me, but the most motivating song I feel for me is dare you to move by switch foot.

  • It really depends on what mood I am in. Sometimes a nice jazz song can get me motivated and other times it takes a more upbeat pop song.
  • I must confess that i love almost every type of music as long as i take my time to listen to the lyrics. Generally speaking every song motivates me in one way or another depending on the situation i find myself...
  • Music does motivate.

I created a music and film multimedia project that was designed to inspire people to overcome challenges in their lives.

It unwittingly became a autobiographical journey. During production, I nearly went blind and found out I had kidney disease and at high risk for heart disease, but I have nearly fully recovered through diet and nutrition.

I'm creating a health related IM product about my experience that I hope will help many people. It will take a while though to create, LOL.

While the project takes you through dark periods in the character's lives, it ultimately leads to
them finding themselves and growing into happiness.

I was told by many "experts" that it couldn't be done. It took 12 years to complete.
You can hear the music and watch videos here:

  • I like listening to soft jazz when I'm doing something light or routine. However, if I really need to concentrate, music distracts me.
  • Old songs are very nice to hear nowadays and they make us feel good and relax us from tension.....
  • i listen to hip-hop , pop and jazz..
but i dun think this music genre make me motivate or insipred me, it's just make me relaxing my mind when i'm listened to jazz so i can think whole new idea...
  • U2 - Original of the Species - "Baby slow down. The end is not as fun as the start."
  • "Never Alone" by Lady Antebellum.

    Cheers!
  • GOOD (IMO) rap, RHCP and John Frusciante all motivate me.
  • I love Gnarls Barkley - Crazy. It gets me pumped up.
  • It depends of my moods. Most of the time I like classical music such as mozart, vivaldi, beethoven..
  • Nothing gets you pumped like SKRILLEX - Scatta.

You'll go of the walls when the bass drops!

I literally work at my computer all day going crazy with this music!
  • It has to be the theme to Top Gun
  • Haha, this is an interesting and unusual thread.

I pretty much love all music that has no words on it (it bothers me when I work).

  • If I'm doing technical IM or content creation work, I like listening to binaural beats (and their variations) - different ones specifically for concentration, creativity, etc.
  • Lots of song. But specially Akon- sorry_blame_it_on_me
  • Music really is my passion. I do have my own compositions and I play some instruments as well.
  • everytime i heard a music it makes me feel comportable specially when the song is rock and love song.
  • I find that classic music relaxing but interms of motivation , I listen to motivational speaker rather than motivational music
  • You know what, recently I found a song that has put more motivation within me. Its called "Be Calm" by FUN . For some reason, when I listen to it, it just takes my troubles away and I realize that I shouldnt be worrying about the small things in life.
  • Great question! Sometimes I think my life is a soundtrack because I can come up with a song for every situation of my life! For work, it depends on what sort of a day I am having.
I like everything from classical to heavy metal, trans-techno and everything in between.
Lately I've been stuck on "Dreamscape" though.
  • If I'm down and need some inspiring, I like Yes's boxed set, or the Pandora Stations "Fire on High" (an Electric Light Orchestra song that will melt your face off) or the Apocalyptica station.

If I just need to crank up the pep a bit, I like disco, funk, Deee-Lite, etc.
  • Survivor - Eye Of the Tiger ( lol )
Paul Stanley - Live to Win
The Prodigy ( almost all songs )

  • Tom Petty's "Won't Back Down" is good, but I personally like Edgewater's rendition better.
  • I live in the mountains so i like the sound of the nature around me.
  • When you are involved in playing or listening music, you enter into a different world. I believe it is true to all.
  • Classical music can always decrease your stress.
listeining 20 munites classical music every day is a great way for stree management.
Purely close your eyes and listeining, than you'll enter another world. A world that can't be described by words.

I also have a chant Buddhist music that seems to be a hit in our office. Kinda like I'm inside a temple where monks are chanting Sutra while I'm eating noodles.

JPop and even some Kpop motivates me, while my Chant Music makes my team docile..haha.

In general it all deppends on my state of mind and what I want to achieve.

    • Definitely Enya when I'm feeling down Especially "Only If", it inspires me to keep moving forward no matter what obstacles in.
"If you really want to, you can seize the day
If you really want to, will you fly away!"

But I always use Dead Can Dance when studying and working to concentrate. That when DCD is played outside those 2 activities, some inner voice always raises commands me "oooh, you should study/write articles right now!! right now!!!" even when I'm enjoying lazy days!

  • Music soothes our soul and mind, and as for me, that would depend on my mood. But the very music that soothes any mood I have is the classical music by Sebastian Bach's Orchestral Suite No. 3. The music never fails to give a nice time to relax and enjoy the time listening. And as a matter of fact, it is a very good music for meditation for self-healing.

  • "Help is on the way " by Michael w Smith. This song really encourages me especially when times are really hard and no one seems around you to give you a solution or a shoulder to lean on .It helps me know that God still cares for me and that he will help me pull through the difficult situation for he has said that he will never leave me nor forsake me.
  • I like to listen to something that is a bit fast paced when it is time to action...but there are those moments when we are looking for inspiration and creativity, somehow classical music and worship music gets me in the mood - call it connecting with my God eh? hillsong is pretty good for me.

  • The music of Mozart and Bach are believed by brain power experts to improve your memory power and cognitive skills over time - listen daily (as background perhaps) for best effect. This music is extremely mathematical in its composition and has an effect similar to binaural beats on your mind.

  • I like Rap/Hip Hop, Psychedelic, Reggaeton, House(sometimes) all the day !! Rap/Hip Hop music is the music that inspires those who do the street life, Reggaeton means only love, House music make you feel you are in a club, Psychedelic inspires me too much because all begins quietly and then is a moment when the music arrives at the highest point !!!
But the thing I would really love to do in this moment is to drive a Ford Mustang year 1967, volume max with songs from old times for example(Driver Parallel Lines Soundtrack)....
