I shot a short video with my good friend Brad Gosse this week. Brad always talks about having a "bad memory" so I wanted to see if my quick memory trick would help him out.

Since this is the mind warrior section, I wanted to ask.... what memory techniques do you use?

Do you work on improving your memory?

Personally I think it is a great way of keeping the mind sharp!

  • Very nice! I'm a more simple kind of guy. I like to read, etc but I'm addicted to Sudoku. That keeps me on my toes most of the time.

Learning to deal with stress and just kicking back and relaxing can improve your noggin too!
  • It is amazing, especially when you thing about school, how important memory is. Jeez if a guy has a great memory, there is no reason to not get straight A's.

    • My memory used to be great when I was in high-school, but lately it's getting worse and worse. Sometimes I feel like Dolly, from Finding Nemo.

There's a little trick that I use sometimes for specific things that I need to remember (like, "go pick up my dress in the dry cleaners"). It's so silly, but it works like a charm:

I pick an object and put in a weird place, where it wouldn't normally be. E.g.: I might put my slippers over my keyboard.

So, when I enter the room I see the slippers there and I think "what are those doing on top of my keyboard??". And than I remember... Oh, right, I've got to pick up my dress!

Before you laugh at me, try it! It works!

    • I guess it would be fun to go to a party in a fancy dress and slippers... I'd be comfortable and get a lot of attention for sure! The best of both worlds..
  • thanks Justin, i'm going to try that for myself.. have you tried this with numbers as well?

    and thanks for your blog
    • [ 1 ] Thanks
  • I acutally have not tried it for numbers but I would love to learn it. New idea for my blog thanks!

I have used this for names and locations and it works famously!

Memory is such an interesting topic.

BTW, @Selena... LOL I love that technique. Just like I said in my video. Its all about using ridiculous association in your mind!
  • Hah, cool trick. I wonder how do they discover all those techniques?!
  • I sometimes use acronyms, often for when i have a school test or something.

For example, if i need to remember 8 points for a particular topic, il usually take the first letter of every word per point, join all the letters together (no matter how random) and make it into a NEW word, even if the word doesnt make sense at all.

I mean iv had words like TGS DHFEM or even PS SUK JUJU, and iv still remembered
    the original points!
  • I'm terrible with names.

Sometimes when I meet people I'll need to ask them a few times to remind me. This is something that I'm working on correcting. I held a sales job for a while and my mentor taught me to use the customers name as many times as I could - same goes with life.

  • Thanks for the post.

My memory is shot, possibly unrecoverable. Now its just me and my whiteboard and notepad on my iphone. Works just fine haha.

    • Ironically sleeping well helps one's memory.I use acronyms a lot and I found that the memory improves if we pay a lot of attention to the process of storing the data/info in the first place. It is very difficult to recall what was not properly stored in the first place!I try to use imaginary icons/pictures, and associations to store vital info.
      Best wishes.

  • I consider my memory good but sometimes it turns bad when I set a lot of things in mind all at the same time. What I usually do then is to always have a small notebook with me so I can write little reminders/notes everyday where I could check them if I've done them already or not. Though, there are times too when my memory gets terrible and I'll have to be reminded as soon as possible to get that thing done -- I'm thankful I've got honest virtual team with me to update with things as well. Alternatively, my Mac also get me reminded of things everytime I open it.

P.S. The point about associating things in mind in a different way might help too. Thanks Justin!
  • It's true- about using association.

The more ridiculous the picture, the more likely you are to remember it. It takes a little practice at first, but as you develop, you will be able to remember lists that are incredibly long.
  • The brain is the most amazing organ. It has been said that it records everything you have ever done or at least has the capacity to. My problem is not so much of not storing the information but recalling it. Some people have fast recall, where mine is slow.

I wonder... How much have I really forgotten or is it just that I cannot recall the memory and it is stored in my brain waiting to be read. Its like when you hard drive crashes and you have all that stored information but you cannot get to read it.

What would be even more remarkable is if someone could read your brain and your stored memories even though you cannot recall them. Imagine that; you would not be able to hide anything. Everything about you and what you had done would be known.

Hmm, all you ideas for improving memory are great.
I maintain my memory "alive" (if I can say this) doing crossword puzzles, reading a lot of books, dong sudoku and practicing breathing exercises.
  • I've been using this product/course called PMemory and it works wonders
  • I stick with the 3x method - say it three times to yourself and it "supposedly" remains in the memory.
  • Yoga works great for me. Not so much as memory but relaxation and focus, which in turn impacts my brain power
  • I purchased a ebook on how to improve my memory But forgot where I put it
