Please change this MINDSET

"This market has big competition, I cannot survive in this, better look for something less crowded!"

I have now a good reputation on my family/relatives and friends, they all know I work online and make big money from it. Every once in a while closest of people seek my help into getting started on the internet.

I don't mind spending my time for these people and try to teach them what ever I know. One of my closest relative asked for my help in freelancing at odesk.

I personally tuition him on this. Later I heard from some1 else, he said that he will overtake me in my work and it will take no more than 2 months to find an online job from odesk.

6 months have been passed and when I met him, I asked about odesk. He said you are a designer and have plenty of opportunities, but in my market (VA/data entry) there is way too much competition and this is not for me.

All of my efforts for him went to the drain.

This was just a real life experience from my life.

Now my friends what do we have to learn from here? Go for crowded niche and work it out, or search small niches where there is no demand?

You are missing the whole point; out of all the competition, there are only handful of real competitors. Like me and you, we all are LAZY. We have built a site, did some content and links but within few months we have quit the whole thing. In the end who stays, takes the prize away.

    Simple persistence isn't enough. I'm sure there are plenty of people who are stubborn enough to keep on slamming ahead even though it isn't working.

    Don't get me wrong, I agree that keeping at it can lead to success in the end, but not if you fail to recognise that what you are doing isn't working and adapting/changing.

    • Correct! Keep trying on something, at least 1000 times (some say) but it doesn't means to repeat your mistake over and over again. Successful people out there are real examples of failure, they have tried, failed and tried again with new and improved methods.

      This is actually what I meant by the way.
  • OK my dad is an architect and he switched from to autocad from traditional drafting using pencil and paper. He said that with in seven years, all the traditional drafting jobs were gone. Sadly, as in all things, you must adapt to change or get crushed by the wheels of progress.

    This is exactly why I don't help people unless they have shown willingness to do some work.

  • My advice for oDesk is home in on your specialized skills. Is there some areas you are an expert. There is ALWAYS work avaliable there for everyone its just a matter of keeping going.
    Another option is join an agency on oDesk and they can help you find work too. They keep applying for you and then take a small cut from your final wages. It saves you the time and energy of applying over and over.

    Make sure your profile looks outstanding. Add your CV, a portfolio whatever you can. Take some tests etc
