Tips To Keep Yourself On Track

As someone who is relatively new to IM, I've found a few useful "tricks" for keeping myself focused and on track when learning something new or researching a new niche market.

Here they are:

1. Commit to spending a set amount of time, be it 5 minutes or 5 hours, actively going over the material you want to learn. Once you set that time, stick to it!

2. Focus exclusively on one particular aspect of your subject at a time. Narrow your focus and dig deep to avoid the feeling of "information overload".

3. Set yourself short deadlines and commit to meeting them. Intense focus for short periods. Longer time frames make it too easy to drag your feet.

Anyways, that my 2 cents worth.

Good luck,

Ben

    • Good post! Nice to know theres other people out there who know how to stay focused.
  • Any tips for those who had to endure Adult ADD, which makes it even more difficult for such poor souls to focus on IM, including me Although I think the one about setting short deadlines would help

    • One way to deal w/"adult ADD" is to set your timer to shorter time intervals. While some people may be able to focus for 30 minutes (or whatever). Maybe it is better for you to start with 5 minutes, maybe less. If you want to get good at something, you have to practice.

Pick ONE of the things you want to read. Read it for 60 seconds (NO MORE), then get up & do something TOTALLY different for a few minutes (walk to the kitchen & get a glass of water, pet your dog/cat/fish(). Then go back and read for 60 seconds (NO MORE), again.
      Wash, rinse, repeat....

Then increase your time to 90 seconds, etc. Try it. It just might be what you're looking for.

  • thanks very nice
  • We all need a plan. Thanks for sharing yours.
  • What about putting a timer on 59 minutes going down, and trying to stick to only one activity while the watch is clicking down?
    This helps me sometimes.
  • What about having a good diary, and every end of day prepare the next day?
