If you're under 18, you probably shouldn't read this thread because it contains sexual content. Having said that, I bet that's only motivating you more to read it... Damn psychological reactance.

When I read Napoleon Hill's Think and Grow Rich, the chapter of sex transmutation is a bit of mysterious. Transforming sexual desire into a passionate pursuit? Hmm.

Surely there must be more discoveries in this area nowadays that elaborate on what Hill was discussing. I'm going to throw out my thoughts on this topic.

It seems sexual transmutation pertains to only males. Why? To me sexual transmutation means maintaining a sexual desire, the desire that is lost after ejaculation. I know as men age, they will often fall asleep after sex because of the exhaustion and loss of energy from the sexual energy leaving the body when ejaculation takes place. Taoists talk about conserving this, which preserves a males energy.

Is this what Hill was trying to say? Reduce the frequency of ejaculation to preserve the energy which can be transformed into something else you can pursue?

  • Personally,

I think that Mr. Hill was talking about the type of energy that "sexual energy" is, not that you need to actually be in a constant state of "arrousal" but that sexual energy creates desire.

If you remember, one of the major themes throughout the book is having a "Burning Desire"

I think Mr. Hill is saying that you should transmute the same type of energy and motivation that you get through "sexual energy" and apply that to getting things done.

Remember the motivation/desire you had to get a date with your signifiant other?

Or remember the motivation/desire you need to get a date if you are single?

And remember how determined you could be to make that happen?

In my opinion Mr. Hill is saying to apply that to other areas of your life.

And I think people get that really confused.

    • Hmm, interesting. You're right in that people get confused, I certainly did.

What Hill says that isn't explained with what you say Sean, from my understanding, is the actual process of transmutation. He says transmutation is an actual transformation of the energy i.e. the sexual energy is used in a different form. To put it straight, I thought Hill was saying something along the lines of pursuing riches in desire of getting some "nookie"! The sexual energy gets used to pursue riches.

  • I have read the book, and honestly, this is the part which I have the biggest question mark too. It is still a mystery to me.
  • I listened to the audio a couple years ago, I don't remember this chapter.

While reading this thread, it made me think of a Seinfeld episode. George became brilliant while he was a "master of his domain."
  • I read the book many years ago and review it occasionally. I always found the reference to transmutation of sexual desire confusing and mystifying. Hill wasn't entirely clear in what he meant or how to do it and I attribute that possibly to the restrictions of the day in what your editor would allow you to write and express.

My take on it was similar to what Sean Bissell expressed earlier, specifically:

I think it is that same kind of driving force . . . but I still don't understand what Hill meant by "transmutation" or how to actually do it.

  • I remember reading it and think it's a poor choice of motivation.

It's using one's ulterior motive to have a sex or "get laid" as a form of motivation to do something.

Kind of like the person who would drive 12 hours just to have sex with someone online (primal brain/libido taking over the cortex/reasoning brain).

That's a strong motivation, right? But it can be short-lived...

But since that "sex transmutation" is based on a short-lived "external" stimulating desire, it can disappointing.

Lust can be a powerful stimulation to take action (like drugs), but it's pale in comparison to joy, love, and true loving passion to achieve something.

As for the Taoist, I think the concept refers to one's "chi" living energy. When a male ejaculates, he losses his vitality as many nutrients are lost. Then his "sexual energy" is transfer to someone else as a spiritual union.

However, if his intention is based on lust, sexual misconduct, or a greedy form of sex, that "sexual energy" is mis-redirected and there can be consequences on his 'chi' or spiritual/sexual energy.
