Born completely blind young Ron McCallum faced life with an enormous handicap. By the time he was a teenager his passion was to become an academic. He got into Law School and faced the worst of all situations in trying to manage notes, absorb the lectures, do the assignments and so on. But he graduated.

The young man thought he faced a pretty dismal future on his own with no chance of marriage. He lived with his mother who did practically everything for him. He then went to Canada for post grad studies and then got a post at one of the local universities back home.

This is when he faced even worse difficulties but he came up with a means to listen to his voice as he wrote his papers, published his books and handled his students. Then he met a woman whom he fell in love with through her voice across a dinner table at a ball or party. She fell for him straight away and they ended up getting married. Meanwhile several other women had been involved in looking after him over the previous few years.

They had taught him simple strategies for learning to cook and to do other household choirs so that by the time he got married he was a lot more independent. Then child no 1 turned up to his great joy. He had never thought he could be a father. Not only that but he changed baby's nappies, bathed him and looked after him like any father would.

Then nos 2 and 3 arrived and the family was complete.

Now they are well grown up and he is a professor of law and his story was told recently because the university has created a special award, the McCallum medal, for outstanding students which he presents to them. Even finding the cheeks of the women to kiss.

This very humble, beautiful man is so open and loving and said he does not miss his eyes as he never had them. One of his sons commented that he always knows which of his children has entered the room. Ron says its because they breath differently, smell different and make a different type of noise when they walk.

What is this man missing? It would seem to me that we who are sighted are the ones missing out. How many of us have achieved what he has? How many have helped as many as he has? How many have accomplished the great milestones they set themselves as children? Blind or not he is a true visionary.

This has too be a great motivating story and I thought you might like to know about it.

God bless

  • Cool story. It's good for him that he didn't allow anything to stop him from his goals.

Personally, I don't need to achieve what he has in order to feel what I am doing is worthwhile. I guess my point is, I'm just as proud of things I've accomplished as he should be proud of things he accomplished.

    • How true, how true. We are all rich and the things we accomplish are what we cling to. We don't need the handicap to make our lives seem worthwhile if we can just utilize what we have and be happy and peaceful. In that you are quite right Joanne.

      Thanks for the responses.

      God bless,

Thanks for sharing such a beautiful and nice story.
  • Very moving story that one needs to refer to often as an inspiration when going through tough time and stop feeling sorry for ourselves.
  • inspirational.
  • Very inspirational. The journey is worth the effort if we are able to leave positive results along the way. Thank you for sharing that story Norma.

    • Well said. This man has certainly done that and many are inspired by his achievements. On the other hand we could probably all achieve more if we blocked the world out of our vision and focused on our inner voice.

  • My sister recently reminded me of the man who was born without legs. His torso just ends and there is nothing beyond it. He grew up knowing that he could probably never get married or have children let alone do anything worthwhile with his life. It was probably worse than being blind.

All to often these Thalidomide handicapped kids are overlooked and forgotten because the world has moved on. But television recently caught up with this chap, can't remember his name, and how his life has worked out.

He would be in his 40's now and he uses a skate board to get around on, pushing it with one hand. He has a good job but I don't recall what it is. The most amazing thing about him, though, is his marriage to a lovely lady who just fell in love with the man, not the looks.

He has children who also accept him for who and what he is and they are very proud of his accomplishments.

He appears to be far less disabled than many who have a lot more. There are so many lessons to be learned from life if we just took the time to look around.

    God bless
