How Do I Break Into Motivational Speaking?

Hello...

I've been reading alot of personal development books (over twenty so far this year). I've reviewed alot of them and I've also occassionally written online articles.

I've given serious consideration into breaking into motivational speaking, but I don't know where to start. I've been looking online for books and other information to help me, but can't seem to find much information or books.

If anybody has any advice as to the best way to start, I'd greatly appreciate it. Is there any "qualifications" you need? Do you need to have a certain "financial" status to be a motivational speaker? The reason I ask is that, it seems most motivational speakers I've seen seem to be all quite wealthy. Also, if you are still dealing with "personal" problems yourself, can you still be an effective motivational speaker?

Finally, what is the best way for someone totally new to motivational speaking to build credibility?

Again, I'd appreciate any help/advice. Thanks!

Join Toastmasters Intl. or whatever public speaking group is close to where you live.

@davidhorph - I haven't tried this personally, but I'd contact your local Chamber of Commerce or small businesses network. Offer them a free short motivational speaking session that can be combined with a networking event or a lunch. Not only will you get some practise at speaking, but you also might meet some great offline contacts and even get some testimonials for your future sessions!

Good luck with your plans - I really hope that everything goes well for you.

Imagine: you got home this evening and Obama has invited you to speak to XXXX on the topic xxxx. So go ahead and prepare the best speech.

But then, start small. Look for, or create opportunities to share this speech. And buy Alan Weiss' Million dollar speaking. Network with other speakers. Pick a mentor...

I wish you the best in your pursuits.

David, Joining Toastmasters is absolutely the first place to start and begin becoming active immediately. There are contests you can be involved with and this is going to give you exposure. Toastmasters are often called on to do speaking for other organizations. They have a built in structure similar to a career path (but not exactly) for motivational speaking. Plus you'll build a strong network of other folks like yourself. Good luck!!!

      Hey David.

For one, there's a course/seminar called Experts Academy by Brendon Burchard.

      EXPERTS ACADEMY

He teaches people how to take what they know, their story and share it with the world and make a fortune doing so.

He also has a book out (recently) that became a bestseller:

Amazon.com: The Millionaire Messenger: Make a...Amazon.com: The Millionaire Messenger: Make a...
I highly advise both as he really digs into becoming an expert in the field.

But the main thing, is to start and start right.

And the guys and gals above have great ideas about where to start and get your name out.

Another place is the National Speaker Association. Most cities have chapters where they meet once a month or so and talk about speaking and marketing.

Now if you want to speak to the youth industry, then Josh Shipp is your man.

Youth Speaker University - Get PAID to Speak

As you can expect, many of these courses are quite expensive, but I would still sign in to get some goodies out of them as well.

If I think of any more resources, I'll hit you up.

Curious, what books did you read this year? Love seeing what others are reading. I tend to read 1-3 books a week (yes, I know bookworm), and the knowledge I gain from it all...WHOA.

      Fun.

Oh, on the matter if you have to be wealthy...well no.

Most speakers actually are just about "comfortable".

Whats makes a great speaker/coach is someone who has gotten results with the things they know, either for themselves and/or others.

The more results, the higher you rank.

The way Brendon Burchard explains it:

There's an expert who an "reporter". The guy who goes out and finds the best practices among people in the niche. Now this guy knows a lot now because he studied the masters but he never done anything in it himself. I may or may not trust him in this topic.

Now there's an expert who is a "result maker". Now this guy doesn't know what everyone else is doing but what he does know what he is doing - works. Now I may trust this guy much more than the "reporter" but even then, how do I know what he did...works for me?

Now when you combine the two types of experts and make it into ONE- The Role Model, this guy knows the best practices, and proved that it works. This guy is the true experts.

Happy I was able to serve you in some way.

And indeed, role models are the best speakers, the best persuaders, the best of whatever you want done really.

And to correct what I said before, if you do it this way and market yourself right, you will become wealthy and then one day someone in this forum or another might ask the same question.... 8)

          Good night indeed!

You already have all it takes within your hands, and my advice would be for you to start by finding out if there are any of your friends who would be interested in e.g online article writing, this may give you an initial audience even if they are only two or three people. This is a story you know too well about yourself and the trials you went through before you became an article writer and can use this as a stepping stone to motivate your initial audience. I think it gets better by doing. These are just my sincere thoughts.

Personal Development should be one of your niche, and you should build a authority site with lots of content. That's the internet approach.

Another way is to enroll into a network marketing program. Build your biz and in time you will be up on stage inspiring and developing people. Networking Marketing is one of the best biz model of the century. I'd been to convention where successful networkers are up on stage presenting to 10,000s...

I also heard toastmasters is the best place to start. Likely there are people there who actually are doing public speaking at seminars and probably authors. Check em out I am sure they are a great place to network.

I think you'd have to get super motivated.

    You know... pump yourself up.

    J.K.

You can get a job with the Dale Carnegie people, Tony Robbins,
    etc.

Christopher Howard used to work for the Carnegie Institute. He's
    a big shot now.

I thought about this at one time. You should totally start a series on youtube or Ustream. Maybe some 5 mins motivational series or something.

You could also do some free seminars around your town at churches, small business, etc. If anything, the'll be good for practice.

I cannot recommend toastmasters more highly. It is very cheap, and usually populated by very highly motivated and positive people. You really cannot go wrong. Make sure you come ready to work!
