My Top 5 : What Self-Improvement Books Have Inspired You?

I've been into self-improvement, developing life skills, continual learning & growing, and emotional intelligence for ages -- since the late nineties. It's always been a solo pursuit up until recently when I decided I wanted to share what I have learnt as much as possible.

So here are my top 5 self-improvement books -- books that have changed the course of my life in subtle and positive ways. I hope you find the list useful and interesting. They're not Amazon affiliate links -- they lead to the books on Good Reads. I just want to share and hear from you.

The last two on the list are very recent, in fact, my decision to get into life coaching is a recent thing for me, and I'm still working through that book. But I've found that it can only take a moment for a single, subtle change in perception to trigger positive change in your life.

If you want to find out more about good self-improvement books, there's a group of us talking about the books we've read and which have helped us grow over at Good Reads:

Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) is a form of mental conditioning very similar to hypnosis in the sense that it works on the subconscious level.
NLP can be used on yourself or to subtly influence others, basically it works developing or modifying mental associations in people.
For example if I was afraid of snakes I could use NLP techniques or have someone else use the techniques to train me to associate an emotion other than fear with the sight of snakes.
A lot of pick up artists or dating gurus claim that men can use neuro lunguistic programming to seduce women, perhaps the most famous is Ross Jeffries for this.
Some of the older Anthony "Tony" Robbins materials are based on the principles of NLP and he describes how he has trained and coached many people to do great things.

I am glad to see someone else likes the Don't Sweat The Small Stuff series.
I agree that many of the other books mentioned are excellent but this series can be applied to any situation.
The basic concept is that you shouldn't worry about the small things...and treat most things as small things.
Sadly, Richard Carlson, the author of this excellent set of books, has passed away, but his wife still writes so the legacy continues.

    Hello Barry,
here is one of my favourites:
The Power Of Positive Thinking by Reverand Norman Vincent Peale.

This was lent to me by a cousin and is full of examples of the power
of positive thought and how people have overcome seemingly impossible
problems by reacting in a positive way.
