Is it all about luck?

I always believed that what you get out of something depends on what you put in.

As a result, I worked tirelessly on hundreds of projects in the hope of turning them into a success. However, after spending all of my time, effort and money on these ideas... I ended up with nothing!

So, I just gave up! I left all of my domain names to expire and focused on my day job, I think i was working in IKEA at the time :p

Anyway, I was messing around on my PC and realised I still had one domain name left which hadn't expired. The website used to be a failed music forum (that I worked very very hard on and spent about $1000 developing). Now, it was a blank page and out of pure boredom I decided to put something, ANYTHING on to the website.

I spent about 30 seconds finding a music search engine script. I installed it, then just left it alone for a month. I literally did nothing.

I checked Google Analytics just over a month later. I thought I was seeing things when I read that my site was getting over 14,000 vistors per day!

I slapped on some Adsense and joined an affiliate program and it started earning $50 per day!

The moral of the story:

Sometimes you don't have to do anything to make money.

----------

I should also mention that after a few weeks I had so many DCMA complaints that I had to shut the website down!

It's back up again now, but a shadow of it's former self at only 2,500 visitors per day. Second moral:

Don't infringe on copyrights. :p

Good luck with all of your ventures!

    • That's actually a really good way of saying it! It doesn't matter if you're digging for gold for 60 years if you're not digging in the right spot. The WORK you put into the project is only as good as the project you're working on itself.

and yes... LUCK can play a big part of it... sometimes... but most times you need to have put in the work and/or have the skill to be "lucky".

  • Luck is always part of it, but I believe that with knowledge and hard work you can overcome bad luck! Some people get lucky and set up one website and do great, others slave for months to get the same results that person got in weeks. The difference? The second one knows how to duplicate the results!

    • It's not about how hard you work, but how smart you work.

      Hard work doesn't bring results
      Smart work brings results

      BTW, congrats
    • I agree that luck is only part of the game.
It all comes down to working hard and then working smart.

      To our success.

    • You are exactly right! Even with my luck, I have no idea how to duplicate the resuts I achieved. Now, I have to work backwards to find out what happened that actually worked (which may take even longer than someone who did it the right way around).

Thank you for all your comments
  • I think hard work does pay off, as long as your being smart about your ventures and using the right kinds of strategies in the right kinds of ways.
