How to get started?

Hey Warriors!

For the past few days, I've been trawling through threads on here, and it's refreshing to see a forum that isn't full of complete trolls who don't actually input anything useful!

My situation is as follows:

I am a 17, going on 18 year old student, who is going back to college (UK college) to study Art and Design, and then do an Art Foundation (sort of a medium between an A-Level and a Uni Degree, I believe).

I recently read Rich Dad, Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki, and am currently over halfway through The Richest Man in Babylon. Now, I have many other reading materials stored on my kindle, but obviously being a young lad, have absolutely no idea which are good, which are useless, and generally have little to no idea how to apply all this that Im learning! :p

My current plan is to find a part-time job, and keep back 10% (at least) of my earnings, into a fund that will provide the basis for my development of my assets column, and provide me with some sort of extra income. However, being realistically honest with myself, I have no idea what I'd put the money into, etc.

Which is why I'm here, asking for guidance!

I have 2-3 years of college now, with a relatively large amount of free time. 17 hours at college per week, with the rest free for work, learning, etc.

My goal is to have acquired some sort of extra stream of income, perhaps generating between 10'000 and 20'000 pounds per year by the end of the three years. I figure this will give me the options for either going to uni later on, or to re-invest in further assets, and start building a financial empire.

Just to be clear, I don't want you guys to think I want you to hold my hand for it all, but like learning to ride a bike, sometimes you need someone to tell you how, give you an initial push, and then let you go, and develop the skills for yourself, until you start getting better and better, until one day, you're riding no-handed! :p

Many thanks in advance for your responses,

Mannequin

  • Hey there Mannequin,

I'm a big fan of starting out by selling services. It's like a paid apprenticeship. By selling articles, I learned a fair amount about SEO and how niche sites work. Pretty valuable information and I made money learning it.

The other thing with selling services is that opportunities consistently present themselves. Let's once more take writing as an example. You start out ghostwriting and notice that people are happy with your work. So what's to stop you from...

    - writing an ebook
    - starting a niche site
    - creating PLR material
    - charging more for your writing
    - looking into copywriting
    - rewriting articles

You could make a career out of that list and it all starts with trying something.

Focus and information overload are big problems for many people. Try to stick to topics that are relevant to what you are currently working on. When you gather information, implement it. 80% doing, 20% information gathering.

Hope that gives you some ideas

    -Tim
  • There are many ways to make money online, there are thing you can do to make money fairly quickly. And there are long term things that you can do that will create a much longer lasting income stream. So it really depends how far you would like to take your IM career and what goals you have in mind. I have a sight that is designed just for this purpose, helping people get started, but I can't leave the sight here yet I have,nt posted enough here yet, but I will help here however I can. Just give me an idea of your short and long term goals.

Ho[pefully I can be of some help to you, Elzie G.

    • My short term goals are to gain a detailed knowledge of finances, and investing money into multiple areas (not decided which areas), and to make a certain amount of money. £10'000 would be a realistic goal for me in the next 1-2 years, and unspecified after that.

Long term, i plan to have multiple streams of income, to attain millionaire status, with money in real-estate, investments in companies etc, and be very financially secure.

    • One interesting observation that's worth mentioning... I don't see many successful people doing all sorts of different things. They tend to focus on one thing and expand on it.

There are a couple of people on the board who started PLR stores and expanded that into information products about PLR.

I just finished a book about Amazon Kindle. At the end of the book, it turned out the guy had about a dozen products in regards to making money with Kindle.

I've bought another WSO from a guy who is consistently creating Fiverr products.

If one particular thing interests you or you see big opportunity in it, seek to learn everything you can about it and expand on it.
  • You like Art and Design? You can just start there. Become an affiliate of a company that deals with art and design or maybe join the Amazon affiliate and sell some art. The easiest is to make youtube movies about art. And then have a affiliate link on the comments. That'll get your ears wet.
The most important thing is your education. So just do the IM part time, make videos 1 or 2 every week on your free time, adding the affiliate link on youtube. And add more videos when you get more time.
Again, your Education is the no.1 priority. IM will still be here for many years, no need to hurry. Just do it on your free time.

    • Looks like I would start looking into forex as something you could build a website on. There are lots of different things you can sell on a website to earn money, there is enough interest in that niche that if properly managed you could create all the income you ever wanted, but you could still do real estate for kicks LOL.

Love your quote I've always said it "If you think you can you can, and if you think you can't your right"
  • Hey man, I'm actually just like you. Im 18 right now, just had my last final friday. I actually started a month ago with adsense and todays going to be my first $60 day. It just goes to show how easy a extra 20k/year is.

I'm already at around 20k an extra a year in a month.

    • I know! I've watched my mum as ive grown up, struggling with money, always struggling to make ends meet, sacrificing her own desires and wants to provide for me and my sister. Then you discover that actually obtaining money is relatively easy, it's just that most people lack the knowledge and/or the confidence to actually go ahead and do it.

People are always making excuses in their heads of why they can't do it, whether it's responsibilities or the fact they might fail, and are just plain scared. My relatively 'poor' upbringing is the fuel for my want for financial security I want to be able to give back to my mum what she gave up for me, and also to provide for myself for my global travels, new car, etc. and the family that I will one day have

  • You can start from a basic strategy of earning online i.e by providing article writing service, there are lots of people who are in search of good writers and also people who are making 1000$...

    • I'm pretty proficient at writing, and enjoy doing it. The problem is, how do I get to start writing for people? How do I break into that area?

  • You're starting off young. That's very good. Don't push yourself too hard though. Life is a marathon, not a sprint.

I've seen people sprint too hard and lose sight of the marathon that is life.

    • Just pick a method of making money online and put your blood and sweat into it. After you've made some money, scale it up. Then you can start to think even bigger about making the thousands and millions. I started of making money from a couple websites and I kept scaling it up till it made money for me on autopilot. I focused on just one aspect of making online which was niche marketing, building websites that ranked in the search engines and profiting from it.
  • Take something you know well, and run with it. Share you experiences with others, write an ebook.

No matter how strange your interests/experiences may seem, there are 25000 other people out there googling it. Believe me, this is the best way to get started.
  • I got in contact with a fellow board member, on how to write articles online. I love writing, and feel that this would be a wise way of me starting to make money online. Has anyone got any resources on this topic, or any personal advice etc?

Also, how would you go about getting paid without the risk of handing over the finished article, and the client refusing payment?

One more thing. Could someone, who happens to write articles for online clients, possibly send me some of their work, so I can get a good idea of things please? :p

    Many thanks,
