Does Positive Thinking Really Work?

If you have been to some motivational seminars, heard some audio books or read some self improvement books, you would be familiar with positive thinking, or saying positive affirmations. You would feel good after thinking or saying positive affirmations.

After chanting the positive affirmation, in the seminars you feel that you can conquer anything in the world. Nothing is impossible. You can achieve anything you want. Nothing is going to stop you. Your adrenaline is pumping in speed. This is the time for change and extraordinary results.

7 days after the seminar, what happened?

Did you go back to your old self? Did your life go back to normal?

You may continue chanting those positive affirmations daily, but nothing is changing. You don't have better results, you still procrastinate like you used to. Your life goes back to the old way. That seminar becomes another seminar.

I'm not an anti-seminar goer. I started my business running seminars. I encourage you to attend seminars to get educated on those success concepts. I myself got value from attending seminars. They worked for you to a certain extent. All I'm saying is there are some things deeper than just positive thoughts.

Why Positive Thinking Doesn't Work All The Time

Most positive affirmations or Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) technology get you to produce positive thoughts so that you feel good, and place yourself into action mode. However, I feel that this is inadequate in achieving your desired results.

This NLP method states that when you change your state, you change your energy. If your being is disrupted while you are in the midst of a task, and you have to get on with the task quickly, this is a good way to temporarily shift your state so that you can complete the task. However, the disruption still remains there, it doesn't go away. It will surface again to trigger you some other time.

What you are doing to yourself is burying the emotions and disempowering thoughts with positive affirmation. You are pretending that they are not there. The truth is they are there, buried underneath. As long as you don't clear them, they will disrupt your life over and over again.

When you are angry, by chanting a thousand positive affirmation about being happy is not going to help. That anger lingers in you, waiting for another opportunity to erupt. Doing this for a long period of time will make you an angry person. The healthier way is to release that anger, before planting positive thoughts.

Sometimes positive thoughts are like Panadol. It'll keep the pain away for a while, but it'll never get to the root of the issue.

Where Is The Root?

The root is your context to life. Some may call it belief. These beliefs shape the way you look at the world, thus determining your actions around handling issues. Even though chanting positive thoughts may support you temporarily, it doesn't shift your context or belief. Your belief remains unchanged, therefore nothing has changed.

A friend used to talk about making more money and becoming a millionaire. I'm glad that she has this great dream. Having that positive thought, and saying "I am a millionaire" out loud is an awesome positive affirmation.

Then something was exposed.

One day we were discussing the topic of happy vs rich. She started saying that "the rich are not happy". If she were to choose, she would choose to be happy rather than rich. I asked her how about choosing both. Her response was it's alright not to be rich, as long as she's happy. And she's contented with what she has now.

What do you think about this? Yup, she can never be rich.

This is an example of context vs positive thinking. Your context will always win. When it comes to crunch time, your context will drive your action.

Positive affirmation is great for temporary fix. It'll get you to feel good for a while. For long term cure, get to your context to shift your result once and for all.

  • The problem is that too many people think it is magic - somehow, if they believe something strongly enough, it will manifest.

The real value of positive thinking is, and always has been, about opportunity awareness. When a person trains themselves to think positively, then, in any given situation, they are more likely to focus on the positives, which is generally the best formula for success (whatever that is in context).

The funny thing is, though, that repeating positive mantras is NOT the best way to be a positive person (IMHO). Instead, take some time out every day to write down something that you are thankful for THAT DAY, regardless of how crappy the day is. Then take a moment to write an email to someone that you know or work with, and thank them for something that they have done recently. Do those two things every day, and after a few weeks, your brain will be well trained to look for the positives.

On a side note, no matter how positive we are, it is difficult to impossible to meet our goals if we have inner conflict about them. If someone goes around saying things like, "Rich people are such jerks!", that person will have a hard time becoming wealthy themselves, because they won't want to be a jerk - they've linked the two things in their mind. If someone is a jerk, call them out on it, but don't link it to their positive traits, be it wealth, beauty, or what have you, because that will just create a stumbling block.

Notice by thinking positive you feel good of something but may not rectify the shortcomings of that something as your mind is only one sided--Thinking the good.

  • I believe that positive thinking can make you success. with positive thoughts, you will be brave and confident to do things that break the routines. we will be hard to achieve success if just doing normal things most people do.
  • I believe that positive thoughts affects how you do things while your 'context' as you call it, affects what things you do.

If you are in a car, you can't keep filling the car with petrol (positive thoughts), you must also steer the wheel.

    • I agree. It all starts with positive thinking and that will lead to your context shift.

At the end of the day, positive thinking is powerful, confidence is powerful, everything else seems to play out nice if you can master those two, which often go hand in hand

  • Great post skyjoe76! IMHO positive thinking is just one ingredient to success.

Positive thinking in this post appears to be specifically speaking about achievement. But being a "positive" person in general helps in life even to those who don't strive for financial wealth. One of my favorite restaurants is so because the manager literally radiates positive-ness... And I'm certain she can't make over 30k a year.

To quote the guy that Tony Robbins worked for before he was "Tony Robbins"... "Affirmation without action, leads to delusion." -Jim Rohn
  • Positive thinking without positive actions cannot give positive outcomes.

There's always a way to turn negatives, into positives. Not by positive thinking, but by opening your eyes and realize that everything around you have a positive connection even the negatives.
  • Positive thinking works because it keeps you moving forward inspite of setbacks. By continuing on your task, you'll get successful outcomes; successful outcomes then motivates you to keep going forward. This series of events build powerful momentum.

To get immediate and better results with positive, you should simultaneously identify all limiting beliefs and convert them into empowering beliefs/paradigms.

You identify limiting beliefs by a process of deep and profound self-instrospection. Some limiting beliefs are non-verbalized, like those you have absorbed from your parents' un-verbalized lifestyle/values.

You could also use an over-arching global paradigm such as: "There is No failure; only Feedback."
  • Positive Thinking does work, but it also helps to take action. Positive thinking is nothing without action. Right Thoughts lead to right action. Right Action leads to right actions. Right Actions lead to right Habits.
  • In my experience, consistently focusing on the positive works better than mere positive thinking. I suppose it can be said they are the same, but there is a subtle difference, and it's based on this principle:

Energy flows where your focus goes, and what you focus on expands. Or as Tony Robbins says, "What you focus on is what you get."

Just by constantly focusing attention on the positive, like by focusing on gratitude or anything else that is positive, it generates a strong positive feeling that literally allows one to see opportunities, whereas being in a negative state often blinds us from seeing opportunities, which MattMax alluded to.

Just a moment ago, I was feeling rather stressed about marketing, yet by just taking a break, and literally shifting my attention completely to something else, the stressed diminished. From there, I just focus on some simple words (like a mantra) and it began shifting my state even further. Not surprisingly, ideas just started streaming to me again.

It's cool how this stuff works, and it's so simple to do

    • Hi

Im in no way an expert at this, far from it im a newbie and still learning however i will apply my thoughts on this topic and hope you can all comment too.

I have to admit I hadnt read ALL of what the post creator wrote, but half-way.

I dont believe in positive thinking in the way many seem to think of it but in another way. I believe the seminar positive thinking etc, is conscious temporary positive feeling/thinking, that is alike to will-power. This is created in the conscious mind and like will power is short lived.

This is why many have the buzzed feelings and feel positive, but its dies away soon after.

What many are hoping from positive thinking i believe is lasting change and feel this comes from positive imaging and subconscious impressing.

When we create an imagine in a mind, it is nothing unless we add EMOTION to it. EMOTIONS are what we can create ourselves i think, and so we can then add emotions to an image. We then have to impress this onto our subconscious minds, and i think this is done best in the relaxed state, because sciences apparently has shown with scans that we then can far more easily create new neural pathways, which is what beliefs tend to be.

Eventually if we impress these positive emotion fuelled images into our minds, we should impress it upon the subconsious and create positive changes inside.

This is the same with affirmations, saying them in the relaxed state does this, from all my learnings into all this so far.

So by doing this we actually then eventually create lasting positive change in our subconscious which then brings those changes to us. I dont believe for a second that having positive feelings every second is possible or necessary...i feel that isnt the way the great people of history, notably prophets of god have been yet have created the biggest change in human history

I feel that the change has to be subconscious from where you become positive. Positive thinking is the result of positive imaging and positive impression upon the subconscious

The will is weak and short lived which is why the speakers take the money and your back there again weeks later

All the self-development gurus seem to teach the above in a nutshell and charge lots for this advice by sugar coating various topics, but if you look for the common thread, its basically a form of self-hypnosis or self-suggestion that we must do...how?

get into a relaxed state, visualise and then say out loud audibly positive affirmations and after that through out the day just feel it will and is coming true and will happen and dont try to do anything to force it, just know it will happen eventually and that will be today at some time

I think thats what all my learning into this has been, what do you all think?

thanks (ps: that was all free for you all lol)

  • It is because you think that going to a seminar and repeat the mantras will give you the things you desire.

It's not that way, Positive thinking it's about you feeling positive and turn to focus into the positive and accept the negative ones as they are without feeling bad for this.

Embrace and get used to positive thinking and you will naturally attratc the life you desire.

    I hope this help you.

  • Here's the truth:

Sometimes positive thinking works and sometimes it doesn't.

In my honest opinion, it is only your action and divine destiny placed by God that determine whether or not you will succeed.

    • Right on. There's really no more value in being optimistic than there is in being pessimistic. The optimist who says: "Its all gonna work out anyway," and so does nothing is no different than the pessimist who says "Its not gonna work anyway," and does nothing.

Likewise, the pessimist who sees all the potential setbacks and who becomes proactively involved in overcoming and preventing them is no less valuable than the optimist who acts in spite of obstacles and who seeks to overcome them instead of being held back by them.

Positive thinking, like all thinking, is passive. Being proactive is all that matters.
  • I believe positive thinking does work. But you have to follow that up with inspired action. Keeping your mind on what you want as you perform the work that it takes to get it will help you to hit your goal. Maintain a high level of expectancy that you will succeed-That is the way that I use positive thinking.

    • Positive thinking works in a way like a dog on a leash. The dog can think positive and run ten feet ahead, or he may think negative and remain ten feet behind the owner. He may pull the owner hardly and risk beating, or he may be content and happy beside him.
Who is the master and who is the dog? The master is our subconscious mind, and the dog is our everyday personality. Without first changing the subconscious it is impossible to have a major change.
To change the subconscious you just need a constant repetition of the desired new idea. That is why affirmations may work on a long run. But they may also not work that easily if the subconscious holds some conflicting beliefs with them. Then it is required to remove these first. I've found that the Sedona Method is the best way for it, but EFT also works. And yes, it needs work, a lot of it.
Also, being more and more on the positive frequency so to speak requires more than just positive thinking. At least at first it does. For example, you have to be able to forgive. To yourself, as well as others. If you can't let go, you are very quickly stuck again.
    • I think that it does work. At least it makes me feel better if I choose to think positive than negative...
    • Yeah!It works and it depends on the matter you are thinking
  • Actually I’ve read several times that it IS okay to fake being positive, and that this can lead you to feeling positive for real.

Apparently the mere action of triggering smiling muscles by faking a smile leads to reactions in your brain that make you feel better. And your creepy fabricated grin will probably frighten the person currently annoying you, just as an added bonus. Give it a try.
  • Of course it does!

It's extremely hard, if not impossible, to accomplish something HUGE and become successful unless you have a positive mind and are able to make it through all of the ups and downs of both business and life in general.
  • It really does work. In my own experience, it did help me a lot in achieving my goals. Though it's been hard at times, but so glad to see it worked.
  • Be it positive thinking or negative thinking, I think the bottom line is still taking action. As long as the type of thinking get your bottom to move, it is positive thinking ;-) There are different types of entrepreneurs that I know of that take action due to either pain or pleasure. I think that's what counts...

  • I believe it is important that you think positive. Let me explain what I mean:

Esspecially when you think positive it makes you happy, if you keep that up you will get real positive moments in your life. You will see that everything changes to the positive! Im not saying that everything will change but it will change the way you live...everything what dropped you before will get better and this is the best way.

It is so important to think positive!

  • I read The Secret a couple years back. It's a self-help book written by Rhonda Byrne. It talks about the Law of Attraction with positive thinking. It made a difference in my life, so I would definitely agree that positive thinking really works.
  • This has always been a challenge to me. Thinking positive is relatively easy, especially when one is really motivated to do what needs to be done. But staying positive is another story.

When one is subjected to a series of difficulties, it is easier to give up than hold on. But this is where one should resolve to cling to their resolution to do whatever is necessary - and hope that everything will be okay. Staying positive while facing series of, and seemingly endless difficulties is the real challenge.

Staying positive or positive thinking is not only about mantras. It is keeping one's faith amidst difficulties and being hopeful when everyone else has been disheartened.
  • Positive thinking definitely works

Who doesn't know someone who's always negative, and seems to just bring more and more negativity into their life?

However, the challenge is definitely about staying positive during difficult times. I've found that hope and belief really make a big difference.
  • I like to look into the science of happiness and completely divert 'motivational speakers'.

I read a book (actually an audiobook) called Stumbling on Happiness, written by a guy called Daniel Gilbert - he also presented the fantastic PBS series This Emotional Life

Turns out happiness is an eternally fluctuating state - who would have thought?

The most consistent happiness comes in the form of intrinsic motivation as opposed to extrinsic -- i.e motivated by helping others instead of for money.

I understood that at any one moment I am the prisoner of my emotions, without trying to sound too dramatic. Instead of searching for happiness I seek gratitude in what I have and what I've had in the past - which is a lot easier to achieve.

We are more instinctive (Read: not controlled by 'us') than we think. I like to think that we have 10% control though conscious thinking.

This apparently small capacity for control may seem really dismal but it's actually very powerful. It just means that while we can't control ourselves in the immediate present, we can only condition control over time.

I leverage control through philosophy, ritual and perspective. I appreciate both the little things in life (morning cup of tea on a cold morning) all the way to natural scientific realities that offer a sense of stability.

That, for me, facilitates positive thinking. It doesn't mean that I will always feel positive but I, for one, accept that

  • Thinking positively certainly work if it's to feel good.

It may also become a drug. For some, the only thing positivity do for them is to make them feel good. That's about it. In this instance, positivity is only a feel good thing, it does nothing else.
  • The phrase "positive thinking" is a general term that covers a lot of techniques and philosophies. What does not work is repeating affirmations that you don't believe. On the other hand, when you cultivate a positive attitude and a sense of optimism and faith, you'll put yourself in a more receptive and resourceful state of mind to attract people and circumstances that can help you create a successful and satisfying life.
  • yeah of course. It changes me a lot....
  • Positive thinking is actually vital to success in any undertaking. However, it alone is not enough. Besides most people when they are practicing positive thinking they are actually focusing on the negative aspect at the same time. I am going to become a millionaire( because I am so tired of being broke) is not really positive thinking. It is better to think I am so grateful I have experienced and learned from the hardships that I have faced so that i can truly appreciate the wealth that i am creating for myself. Every successful Person I know has read and swears by 2 books. " the science of getting rich" and Napoleon Hill's "Think and grow Rich". Both books focus on positive thinking. It can over time cause a shift in the subconscious that will shift your beliefs to align with your desires but it again takes dedicated and intentional action. So yes Positive thinking does, but it is not the only tool you should use. Anyways just my thought on it.

  • I think it works for the reasons Mattmax stated. It helps you see possibilities in anything you do.

If you have a negative attitude and tend to think that things just don't work - Then you will probably miss out on a lot of failures as well as good opportunities.

The "it probably won't work anyway"-attitude is not good for your IM career.
  • Either, I am not thinking positively enough, or else it does not work well enough. Hmmmmmmmmrrrmmph.
  • You are absolutely correct. A what a person believes is what governs the actions that he/she will take. The good news is that beliefs are not set in stone. If a person chooses to he/she can change thier limiting beliefs into beliefs that support their goals.

Neuro-linguistic programming, or neuro-associative conditioning, is a great form of therapy to help a person to change their beliefs. The same could be said of any form of therapy. Positive thinking and affirmations are also great tools to help change a persons beliefs; not instantly but over time. The only problem with positive thinking that I have found is that you have to think about it. I have personally had more success with NLP methods for changing my behavior than just trying to "think better".
  • Having run my own 'motivational' blog for several years, I am a true believer in the benefits of positive thinking but I also accept that other tools are often required to bring forth any longer term positive change.

A mantra that you find appropriate today will not necessarily be the one you should use tomorrow. We are ever evolving and diversifying towards our goals.

And talking of goals, I find that more beneficial to goal attainment than positive thinking is to have absolute clarity of mind and purpose.

By understanding exactly what you are trying to achieve over a given period will eradicate any doubt and confusion, thereby leading you more directly to attainment.

But to help achieve, you should also set foreseable targets and not life long strategies. It is little use setting a goal to be a millionaire by the time you retire as this is both vague and distant (in most cases anyway).

If your true aim is to become a millionaire then that should be your 1 or 2 year goal. understand why that is your goal and then work backwards to identify exactly how to achieve that goal. By doing this simple exercise, you will be amazed at how clear your path becomes.

As to motivational audio or reading. yes this is important but it should fit your mood and your thinking. sometimes I want to hear stories of power and other times of goodwill. At other times I need the gentle stimulation of binaural beats and other times, a more driving beats is what is needed. There is no recipe for motivation, it is very personal and should be guided by your own mood or emotions.

I agree that repeat exposure is also necessary and I feel that any more than 3 days without motivational input will see a decline in the affects.

Finally for this moment, I will end up by saying that my blog no longer exists so don't bother to look

I do however still believe in the power of positive thought and energy so just wanted to put my tuppence worth into the thread.

  • Positive thinking is easy to believe in, especially at a seminar or the like where it is enthusiastically portrayed. Where it all goes wrong in my view, is that positive thinking is the precursor to positive action. But not following through with positive action results in no achievements. And repeated non achievement results in a loss of belief in the original positive thinking and the good feelings that came with that. The key is to follow on through with real action - you need the positive thoughts as a starting point, but you need real action to get from the starting point to the destination. No action equals no achievements, and that tends towards depression and disillusion.

  • After reading this whole thread I can't find any reference to believing.

It's no good banging out affirmation after affirmation if they are worded in a way that you find trouble believing.

For example: saying "I have £100,000 in my bank account" when you only have £1 will make it impossible for your subconscious mind to even consider that to be a true statement.

However, if you say "I love to see my bank balance increase each day" it is so much easier for your subconscious to believe because the statement is TRUE for you.

Instead of "I have..." use "I love to have..." or "I am... use "I love to be..." - you get the idea.

Once you have a subconsious belief that something is true it makes the positive thinking so much more likely to have the required result.

So, when you are using positive thinking or affirmations to help you to achieve a goal, always use a statement that is TRUE for you.

Oh, and remember to look out for the opportunities that are presented to you in order to achieve your goal. A small step that will take you closer to your goal is your subconsious mind providing you with the tools to succeed.

The power of positive thinking is like a car with a powerful engine that can take you to the summit of a mountain.
  • It does really work at all. If I'm struggling with my own products, experiments and other things that I maintain right now, I should always keep going and be positive to it.

  • I've spent my life trying to overcome the habit of negative thinking.
    Why?
Negative thinking saps my energy and I don't feel like doing anything.
When I think positive I feel hopeful. When I feel hopeful I have energy to do and tackle whatever stands in my way.
Does positive thinking work for me. You bet. but not in the way most people want or expect.
  • Positive thinking is vital for success, and is as important as goal setting and visualization.

Thinking positively sets up a whole new physiology and energy that provides the motivation to take action, which is the most important element in the whole process.

Think about it, someone who is negative and depressed is never going to be in the right mindset to do anything pro active.

A positive mindset is one that is open to new possibilities and more likely to attract people and circumstances of a similar type...remember "Birds of a feather, Flock together"....as do negative thinkers and pessimists or optimists and millionaires!

As was rightly mentioned in this thread, the problem with keeping positive thinking going is when normal life gets in the way, with all the problems we have to deal with on a regular basis along with negative news on TV and in the journals etc

That's one of the main reasons we need to get motivated every day, to guard against the mass thinking of "doom and gloom" that often prevails.

Zig Ziglar said it best when he quoted "People say that motivation doesn't last...well neither does bathing, that's why we recommend it daily!"

Motivation is like Vitamin C...we need it daily to function at our best and keep a positive and action orientated mindset, so critical for success.

We are the result of our most dominating thoughts...surely it makes sense to at least think positively.
