Unique Scenario: Needs Marketing Advice

Warrior Forum,

I've recently taken a job at a small internet gaming company, but the position has trouble holding any employee for a long period of time. The company consists of several programmers, and a fourth "marketing manager" (me).

I'm fresh out of high school, and was taken in as an experiment, to see if I prove more effective than some of my more educated predecessors.

The job is full time, and we've already established a faithful fan base, a steady income, social media, advertising, affiliate partnerships, and all the basics you need to be an effective internet business; this company has been around for years.

Now, we're launching a completely new game for the mobile market (not yet released), already with the basics set up, but we lack users, or means of getting attention in an overcrowded field. I've specifically been told to not use any of our current fan base to beta test, or to inform them of the release at all.

My dilemma is this: My position is to be that of an innovator and day-to-day manager, while I have neither experience nor defined goals. With typical resources for expanding our new game cut off by my company, I need another new way to improve our business, and seem effective to my boss.

The basics have already been covered: advertising, website design, fan base, social media, etc. I need ways to push boundaries in an environment without marketing knowledge, when all is expected of me.

Please help.

I agree with the wisdom of the above post, and feel for you. I don't know very much about gaming. But I know a thing or two about marketing.

Someone wise once cut through the jargon and said: business is simple: you find out what people want, find out where they hang out, and stand in front of them offering what they want, the way they want it.

Are there any gaming forums and or sites, or blogs where a high concentration of your potential users hang out--and find some way to get attention.

I hope I don't sound too simplistic, but in tough times, it's good to go back to basics.

In any case, wishing you well with your task!

Ouch! Talk about character-building! Lots of good thoughts to you.

What I'd do if I were you is to see how other games have been launched in the mobile market. Forums to consider might be:

    Community
Mobile Game Developer • Index page
DevMaster.net Forums - Powered by vBulletin

(wow, seeing that last resource brought back memories for when I was teaching gaming recruiters how to find developers...)

Then perhaps I'd research how these guys promote their stuff....

and from all the data I gathered....try to construct a marketing plan meself.

    Best of skill!

Scott Adams, the creator of the Dilbert cartoon, wrote a great book
"Stick to Drawing Comics, Monkey Brain!" and one of the main points he makes is that he has always been the most successful doing the things that he knew the least about!

You mentioned "no experience" a few times in your post - this actually can be a strength.

The best thing will be to completely go with your gut instincts on this, go all out with that, no matter how crazy it seems your ideas may be.

You are in the entertainment business, where the worst mistake you can possibly make is to be boring.
Whatever your gut says - go for it!
