“The Definition Of Courage …”

When I think about being a “hero” I think of people like Captain America.

But an ordinary person can be a hero too. As Christopher Reeve said:

“A hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to persevere and in spite of overwhelming obstacles.”

If you have overwhelming obstacles in your life, you have the chance to be a hero. And, the feeling you get when you persevere in spite of those obstacles is amazing. (I know because I’ve overcome social anxiety, depression, suicide, etc.) As I wrote myself: “A man builds character through many trials, tribulations, and challenges.”

Often when we think of “courage” we think of people who are unafraid. (Like William Wallace maybe.) However, the truth is if you’re going anywhere in life, you have the opportunity to be courageous on a daily basis. Because:

“Courage is being afraid of something, and doing it anyway.”

Understanding these two principles (and practicing them) will make you a more successful Entrepreneur. More importantly, however, they make you a more successful person. : )

  • good job Jonathan or can I call you 2.0?

    Origin of COURAGE

Middle English corage, from Anglo-French curage, from quer, coer heart, from Latin cor — more at heart
    First Known Use: 14th century

my courage - I reduce the fear by doing it - expecting to screw up, fail, and look like an idiot knowing my heart is in the right place and I'll get better.

  • Even if we are on focus, we can be full of hopes and confidence, yet on days fears and apparent obstacles do pop up and can tend to cloud our judgement for just long enough to topple our journey for a short (or prolonged) time!

It's at those times we need to understand there are no obstacles sufficiently strong enough to keep us down for long and that's when we tap into our hidden resources and utilize courage.

So, I believe courage is incubated by having a clear goal or mission deeply impressed in your heart and an understanding of mind that an attitude of impossibility to fail is at the seat of perseverance!

I hope that made sense ???

    Kindest...

  • We can be a hero or the villain. It all depends on you. You have to be guided with informed and educated actions in order to become a hero.

  • Nice quote. It definitely does involve 'feeling the fear and doing it anyways' is one of the keys to courage. "The hard right over the easy wrong" (mark joyner) is usually the correct decision.

  • Great Quote thanx: Just want to share a supportive view,...In my book, Outrageous Success, Courage means making a "Choice with Heart"...many times hard to do, but with full consciousness and practice I believe we can make courage a day to day, moment to moment choice...

  • Courage is to do things differently than 95% of the people out there. Don't be a follower, be a leader. Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.

Everyone is learning and studying to "work hard for money."
I study and learn to have "money work hard for me."

    May God bless you,
    Jeremiah

    • Courage isn't possible without the presence of adversity. Trying to eliminate resistance or fear before taking action is the opposite of courage.

  • Another good quote to go along with this point is this one by John H. Johnson.. "I believe the greater the handicap, the greater the triumph."

I've been going through some "tough times" recently and that quote gives me the courage and strength to keep going. The words are like light at the end of a dark tunnel... very empowering.

Great thread btw, keeping my mind in check!

  • I think you find courage when you discover purpose. Trying to abolish fear just confirms that fear is a real enemy which must be conquered. It's not, it's only real when we treat it that way by fighting it.

  • Courage by Anne Sexton

It is in the small things we see it.
    The child's first step,
    as awesome as an earthquake.
The first time you rode a bike,
    wallowing up the sidewalk.
The first spanking when your heart
went on a journey all alone.
    When they called you crybaby
or poor or fatty or crazy
and made you into an alien,
    you drank their acid
    and concealed it.

    Later,
if you faced the death of bombs and bullets
you did not do it with a banner,
you did it with only a hat to
    comver your heart.
You did not fondle the weakness inside you
    though it was there.
Your courage was a small coal
    that you kept swallowing.
    If your buddy saved you
and died himself in so doing,
then his courage was not courage,
it was love; love as simple as shaving soap.

    Later,
if you have endured a great despair,
    then you did it alone,
getting a transfusion from the fire,
picking the scabs off your heart,
then wringing it out like a sock.
Next, my kinsman, you powdered your sorrow,
you gave it a back rub
and then you covered it with a blanket
and after it had slept a while
it woke to the wings of the roses
    and was transformed.

    Later,
when you face old age and its natural conclusion
your courage will still be shown in the little ways,
each spring will be a sword you'll sharpen,
those you love will live in a fever of love,
and you'll bargain with the calendar
    and at the last moment
when death opens the back door
you'll put on your carpet slippers
    and stride out.
  • According to vivekananda----Tell the truth boldly, whether it hurts or not. Never pander to weakness. If truth is too much for intelligent people and sweeps them away, let them go; the sooner the better.
  • Courage is not something that comes from flying to your heart in moments of need or in emergencies. Courage is not something that can be handed over to you through lessons either. Courage is a way of life. It is as much a habit as anything else.
    Thanks.
  • Depends what we are trying to be courageous about I guess!

I find a lot of the time, Strength of Character, or Will Power over an issue, is blended into the definition of courage.
So courage could mean ability to persevere...but then isn't "perseverance" a will power issue?
Or...Courage to stand firm in the face of danger...wouldn't that be "faith" that you believed you'd come out OK afterwards?
So, really, Courage has a blend of meanings, it seems, to me anyways...
