It's essential that you arrange your working environment to maximize motivation and productivity.

Here are some tips that you can practice:

1. Separate Work and Domestic Life
Its important to separate your domestic life from your work, by creating both mental and physical boundaries. The best way is to have a dedicated workspace.

2.Make it comfortable

It's the place where you're going to spend a considerable amount of time, so it's essential that your desk and chair are comfortable . Make sure your monitor, keyboard, mouse or laptop are positioned at the right height and angle so that you aren't hunched awkwardly.

3. Clean and tidy
Take a minimalist approach to your desk by removing unnecessary things. Untangle wires and cables and hide them away as far as possible. Keeping your space clean and tidy can promote an efficient approach to your daily work.

4. Use a Second Monitor
A second monitor can improve a workspace's organization. It's useful to have an extra monitor to keep related documents and websites open while your 'main' monitor is dedicated to real-time work.

5. Add Some Visual Stimulation
Posters and paintings can help inspire and motivate. Position your desk near a window so you can gaze at the sky and regain your thoughts.

6. Provide Good Light
The quality of light also directly modifies your mindset, so make maximum use of natural light and choose soft, warm colored light bulbs for a pleasant ambience.

7. Use a Whiteboard and Calendar
A whiteboard is great way to jot down ideas when brainstorming, work out plans and make notes for future reference. Paper calendar on the wall helps with mapping a work schedule and keeping track of deadlines.

8. Get Some Plants
Plants can improve your working environment. A little greenery is aesthetically pleasing, freshens the air, and the occasional watering and pruning proves a welcome distraction from the pressures of work.

9. Listen to Music
Background music can influence your mood. Choose music or radio to suit the project you are working on and heighten your creativity.

10. A Relaxation Space
It's important to take breaks during the working day, set up a relaxation area or couch away from the desk where you can unwind and take your mind off work for some time.

  • Working from home can be mentally taxing. I traded stock and forex for many years, but working from home got very boring and taxing.

Another tip: Get Out Of The House.
It's easy to become an island when you're working from home. Schedule time away from the office, whether it's to work out or catch up with an old associate. Keeping a social calendar is a great way to break up the monotony and isolation of working from home.
  • I think #1 is the most important of all. You have to keep work and family/domestic life separate, otherwise, things can get very distracting. If possible, keep everything work related in another room entirely. That means don't keep your gaming system or music equipment or other toys and distractions there in the work office. Of course these are just recommendations. Maybe some exercise or weight lifting equipment might be an exception.

If it is not possible to set up a home office in another separate room, then get yourself a good set of Circumaural headphones (ones that cover your whole ears), and let everyone in the house know - when the headphones are on, means you are at work and can't be distracted!
  • I also HIGHLY recommend taking off at least one day a week. (Easier said than done, I know.) On that day, don't do ANYTHING work-related including reading related books, listening to related audio programs, posting on message boards, etc.

Working at home can be fun, but without work-life balance can lead to burnout.

    Good luck!

  • Because of this post, I am literally cleaning up my workspace right now.

I've had this thread open all day long and I'm going over and over each thing you mentioned.

It's been a while since my office was thoroughly cleaned and I've been stressed because of it.

    Thanks a lot!

    P.S. I'll take a picture after.
  • Number 1 is difficult for me as I am also taking care of a 2 year while working urgh! But I count myself truly blessed that I can work and do business while spending time with my son!
  • There are some good ideas there, but I don't see
a need for a second monitor.
It need be, I just open additional tabs in my browser.
    And that works out fine.

Also, at least for me, I cannot play any music while I
work, because I find it too distracting.
A quiet work environment is best for me.
  • Hai, You can read this book "The Magic of Thinking Big"
I did not remember author name. But it is very famous book.
  • 1. Separate Work and Domestic Life
Its important to separate your domestic life from your work, by creating both mental and physical boundaries. The best way is to have a dedicated workspace.

    >> This is somewhat difficult. But I will be working on it. Keeping a good working environment is very important.
  • It’s doesn’t matter where you work but arrange you’re working environment to maximize motivation and productivity. Whatever your resources or space restrictions. And i think quite environment is also important.
  • Great share! I have found it very helpful.
  • I definitely agree with your suggestions. A positive environment creates a positive feeling and thus positive results.
  • OH Ya good stuff! Here is another thing I use it may help someone. I have a poster actually I have many but my favorite one is " Everyday Play Like A Champion" It helps the mind to see and read positive things. So many time we loose focus. Failure to hit the bulls eye is never the fault of the target. Joe
  • Another thing to keep in mind is--take breaks! Take a stretch, grab some water, blast your favourite song and dance like a madman, whatever it takes so you can work on your tasks with a fresh mind!
  • All excellent tips, many of which I do. I particularly like the emphasis on keeping a tidy environment ... I was NOT like that in the early days of my home office and it definitely affected my perspective and ability to be productive.

I also like the idea of having a whiteboard, cork board, or simply some way to post notes and things in a handy, visual spot. I also keep a calendar hanging close by so I can instantly mark – and check – important dates. A calendar in my computer is fine, but it can easily be ignored. One hanging by my desk serves as a great visual reminder to look at it every time I sit down!

  • Because of current life events, I've been forced to be a bit of a gypsy, I work in 2 different places every day during the week, and yet another on the weekend. Have laptop, will travel, lol.

So I've gotten it down to this- a comfortable chair and simple table, in a nice peaceful room (when available; big headphones when not). I take time (not enough!) to step away for brief walks, and the occasional treat- working at Starbucks.

Since I must adapt to certain circumstances I am dealing with for now, I create a little comfortable bubble around me wherever I go. Simple comforts, works for me.
