Hi Warriors,

I am interested in ways you use to motivate yourself to do something even when you don't feel like it. Do share with us your technique.

  • I do one of the following.
    Write a priority list. Take the task and break it down into 3 or 4 things, that way you can see the progress you've made. For me even when I don't want to do something, It helps to organize my thoughts. And I usually tend to say, I've come so far might as well go to the next task. Or if I really don't feel like doing it, at least I have a check list of where I started and where I am at for another time.
    The second thing is exercise. Run, Jump Rope, hit the bag, anything to get the adrenaline going. that helps to boost my confidence to the point where whatever task I have to do seems small in comparison.
    The third thing is Meditate. Most times, the tasks of the day swirl around to the point of not being able to think. Sitting and Closing my eyes, concentrating on my deep breathing. It helps clear the mind tackle any obstacle.

    • I like Meditate too. This is similar to "Qi Gong" or "Chi" in Chinese. But in a much simply format.
  • One thing that gets me on the computer more is doing maths.
    Figure out your business model and start doing some hypothetical equations.

    Possibilities are very exciting.
  • Hey guys, I just go and do something else for a little time I've been come back to it.

    Don't spend time on something if you're not interested and try to get motivated doing something that you like. This technique (if I can say so), helps me to clear my head and come back fresh and motivated!

  • I think of the final outcome and how it will positively affect my life. That usually allows me to power through mundane tasks. I also have my desktop background set up as sort of a vision board with a collage of my goals...that helps.
  • Personally I get motivation by mere thinking of helping others! Rather than fishing for problems, I see myself as a solution provider. I assist people through articles, seminars and 'words of encouragement'

    Whenever you area feeling down, tired or lost, think about somebody you love, it can be your lover, family and friends. You will get the direction, motivation, inspiration that push you to moving forward.

    • Being in the right mental state is the only way I've found that is effective for me. If I'm tired or distracted I'm not motivated. If that's the case, I try to take a short walk and get some fresh air. The key is to observe your surroundings while walking - be in that moment without the mind chatter about what you have to do when you get back.

      So I make sure I am rested ahead of time. That means getting solid rest physically and mentally, not necessarily just x number of hours of sleep. Next I find listening to brainwave mp3's really makes a difference. Ones mind is like a radio receiver and until it is tuned in to a particular frequency - there can be a lot of noise (needless thoughts). So once all of that is dealt with - I can focus and get things completed much faster. I start with the hardest task first (if possible). I also take a break every 90 minutes, depending on what I have set out to accomplish that day. When I'm finished reward myself.

      This has worked well for me.

  • Meditation and bribery. 1st I center myself so I can focus on the task at hand and then I think hard about the bottle of rum that I will reward myself when the job is done.

    Well what I do to motivate myself is think about my future. I see my goals clearly and know a will reach all of them. So when every I slow a down I ask myself, "what are you doing? You can slow down one bit." Then I get right back to it. I have pretty good self motivation and have never quit when I put my mind on reaching a goal.

    I suggest that people who have problems motivating themselves to get a bigger "why." I believe that could be your only problem. If your "why" is big enough you will never slow down or quit. Best wishes.

    • These are some great ideas about how to be/stay motivated. I will keep this in mind next time I am down. As for me I just ran about 3 miles and I feel pretty sharp, it usually helps me focus on the tasks at hand.
    • Looking towards the future is definitely one of the things I do on a regular basis. I will evaluate if what I'm doing today would bring me towards my goals, or away from them. It keeps me motivated and focused on what I need to succeed.

      Having the reason why is also the biggest element in achieving goals. A 'Must' is A 'Want' + A 'Why'. So in order to make it a must for you to succeed, I agree that attaching a 'why' to all our 'wants' would fit the bill.

  • I am motivated by success. Just knowing that the things I do will lead me to a better life is enough to make me work hard until I reach my goals.

    Three years ago, I was desperately looking for a way to make money online.

    Today I do the same.

    However, today, I have 3 years of experience behind me, bunch of money already made AND spent. So, whenever I think of "Oh, I'll never accomplish anything" I know that isn't true because I already did.

    Thinking you need motivation before doing something is a myth. That's what people who study too much personal development material think. Everyone else just gets on with it. As Gary Halbert once said: "Movement creates more momentum then meditation." Don't wait around for motivation. Just start taking action and you'll become motivated.
  • I have all my awards and pictures that represent most of the things I'm most proud of hanging on a wall in my room. Whenever I feel down or feel overwhelmed, I look at my "Wall of Achievement". I remember my successes in the past and I know I can be successful again.

      1. Find a true interest in what you are doing. If you have no interest at all, it might mean you need to do something else. On the other hand, if it's just a task you dislike, relate it clearly in your mind to the greater goal. I don't particularly like to drive, but I don't have a motivation problem when I am driving to the mountains for a vacation.


      2. Create energy. You need some energy for self motivation. Caffeine may help for a while, if it doesn't create other problems for you. You can also exercise and sleep well. Watch out for sugary foods - the "sugar blues" will kill your motivation. When you find energy boosters that work for you, make a list and keep it handy for future use.


      3. Talk your way to motivation. This is one of my favorite ways to create energy and motivation. By the time I tell my wife about the article I'm going to write, I'm out of my slump and back at the keyboard. If the task itself is less inspiring, talk about the larger goals it will help you achieve.


      4. Stimulate desire. Imagining their potential future motivates many to sign up for get-rich-quick plans. Good salesmen can put you in your imagined dream home in minutes, and you'll feel motivated to do anything to make it real. Why not learn to be your own salesman?


      5. Stimulate pain. An effective Neuro-Linguistic Programming technique is to link pain with not acting. This is what happens when you finally stop hitting that snooze button on the alarm because you think you

      might lose your job. Imagine any bad consequences that may occur if you don't do what you need to do.

      6. Start with any small step. I have found that if I commit to raking up one bag of leaves, I soon want to finish the yard work. Training yourself to take any small step towards your goals is a great self motivation technique. Breaking larger goals down into small steps makes this even easier.

  • I also set a (stupid) goal. For example, I'd say "I want to buy a MacBook Air this month" And then, even though I have the funds, I do not buy it - I wait until I earn that much to buy it.
  • 1. Make a list of what I want to do. Several lists, actually: A list for the year, a list for each month, a list for a given week, a list for the day. Even if I don't accomplish everything on these lists, I get much more done than if I'd not bothered writing them down. It's sort of fun to scratch things off the list, because it shows I'm making progress.

    2. Set some easy goals. For example, if I dread doing something, I might say I'll just "get started" on it, or spend a couple of minutes on it. Chances are I'll end up spending much more time on it and even get it done.
  • The fact that I am making money online now definitely gives me motivation, when way back then I thought it's not even possible. I've had mild success and definitely eager to have more. That, and the fact that I am about to get married, that motivates me a lot..

    • I set myself a list of goals for the day and make sure I take a break every couple of hours or I tend to lose momentum.
    • When every time I see my child..she's the one who always make me motivated to face and deal with reality in life
  • T. Harv Eker in Millionaire Mind has one affirmation that has stuck with me above all others.

    I act even when I don't feel like it.

    I say this to myself a couple times and it really is how I view myself now. I am willing to take the tough steps -- to get up early, to continue when discouraged.
  • My NLP training taught me to "interrupt the limiting pattern." For me, this is usually a good workout on my acoustic guitar. The neighbours got used to it after the first five years, and they are thankful I don't play an electric!

    • I am lucky, I guess. I'm very deadline-oriented. Once we agree on a schedule or due-date, I move heaven and earth to keep my part of the pact.

      And I also value greatly keeping my word... I'm old-fashioned that way. My word is my honor. Written agreements, emails - sure.

      So I basically drown in a project until finished. Then it's on to the next.

  • Try to use a egg timer. When you have a task that has to be done and seems impossible to start. Set the timer for 50 min. when it rings you stop, take a break for ten minutes. Refresh then set the timer for 20 min. when it rings take another break for 10 min. You will get alot more work done in these blocks of time and look forward to the breaks. It will help keep you motivated.

  • you know - different things motivate me at different times for different reasons. You need to find something that moves you emotionally - that can be a trigger - doing NLP is great - you can program your mind to have a trigger - ie - I had it done to motivate me to exercise- they programmed a technique - that when I pull on my ear lobe I am reminded of the reason.... it has seemed to work so far!

    other than that I have a vision board and recite my goals first thing in the morning -

      A visual board does help and I have one too. NLP is a powerful technique that we can use to shift us into our motivated state in a second and we can definitely use it to our advantage.

  • Hey!

    What you can do is that you think of what you want to achieve in the end. Like your final goal. Then you can set smaller goals so that you can feel good each time you complete something.

    With the end in mind you know that what you're going to do will help you achieve that goal. And that goal will make you all excited and motivated to push on even though you're not in the mood to do something =)

    Or just psycho yourself at how easy that task is going to be! It worked for mee! haha!
  • Visualization. When ever I don't feel like doing something, nine times out of ten it's something that is good for me and something that I will benefit from (Odd how we can do the things that do nothing for us all day). I just visualize the result and benefits that I'll no doubt reap. For sports, I hated working out. So I visualized my ocular success physically and visualized all of the great and awesome things I would and did do on the field. Of course this strategy applies to everything. For my business success, I visualize profitable transactions and my ideas for profit generation as pure gold. Basically, your mind is powerful and what you see in your mind can easily be duplicated in the real world. Visualization combined with praying and the help of God is a guaranteed way to success every single time.

  • I think making a list is important.It gives us a goal for the day.I've been doing this for a little while and find it much easier to stay focused. I also agree that some days you just need to take a little time and not do your homework. If I get really frustrated I'll walk away for an hour or so.
  • I motivate myself by thinking of what good things will happen if i do this and that. I just start thinking positively so that I will never have to think about not wanting to do something.
  • I start off the day with Esther and Jerry Hicks.. Me time... Jot stuff down in the filo that I want to get done.... check sales... jog listening to upbeat stuff....

  • I keep myself motivated with a vision board/dream board. I strongly feel that you can change your life by changing how you perceive your life and your future.

    Whenever I get unmotivated, or a little off track, I work on my dream house book. I spent one day going to Menards and gathering books on windows, paint, doors, fixtures, and etc...I cut out pictures of what I want and paste these images on paper. I have just about every room planned out, down to the minor details. Working on your goals is a great way to change your energy from unmotivated to motivated. So, Whenever I feel despaired, I look at my book and imagine myself in my new house, and I can conquer the world.

    I found that focusing on what you want in life and making it real to you in your mind helps you keep motivated towards your goal. Goals can be large or small, but focus on what you want in life and it will give you all the motivation you need and then some.
  • Many a people use enchanting music to motivae oneself. But in my sadly, it doesn't work.
  • Great topic, I get motivated by taking inventory of what I am grateful for and focusing on the results I am getting day by day.
  • Imagine what your life would be like tomorrow if you don't take action. Imagine what your life would be like next week if you kept procrastinating. Do the same for a month, 6 months, a year, 5 years, and what your life would be like if you didn't take action for 20 years. Then do the same if you did.

    That may seem like enough but take it a step further. Ask yourself what would make your success inevitable. That's right, I said "inevitable." What could you do to make your success inevitable. What write a check for $100 and give it to your neighbor and say, "log into this website. Everyday you don't see some new content for the next 90 days, go out and cash the check." That's just an example, but make a public consequence.

    Lastly, just do one thing at a time. Chances for success go down considerably when you focus on more than one project at a time.

    Don't expect to just have motivation once you learn the right trick or hear the right quote. Let your motivation be to always find motivation. If you set about to do task A that involves you completing subtask a, b, and c but you don't feel like starting with subtask a, change the list to subtasks a,b,c, and d. What's the new subtask a? Get motivated. Don't not do something when you don't feel like it, just add motivation to the list rather than expect to always be motivated and only act when you are. My favorite is journaling. I use macjournal. You can't beat the full screen mode with the black background and nothing else. All the answers are really inside of us. It's the best prozac ever. You feel crappy. Start writing. It's amazing, I can always journal myself out of a crappy mood. Works everytime.

    There are 3 primary reasons we lose motivation:
    1. Lack of confidence - If you don't believe you can succeed, what's the point in trying?
    2. Lack of focus - If you don't know what you want, do you really want anything?
    3. Lack of direction - If you don't know what to do, how can you be motivated to do it?
    Once you know the reasons why you lose motivation, you will know how to escape from it.
    - You should focus on gratitude. Set aside time to focus on everything positive in your life. Make a mental list of your strengths, past successes, and current advantages.By making an effort to feel grateful, you'll realize how competent and successful you already are.
    - you should define the goal. When know what you want, you become motivated to take action.
    - A lack of direction kills motivation. The key to finding direction is identifying the activities that lead to success.

    • One of the most important things we need to do to be motivated is to constantly feel in touch with the WHY of what we are doing. What was the reason you started? What do you want to achieve? Start thinking about what your dreams were that got you taking action in the first place and really get in touch with them.

  • This is a great thread, and it's about time I put my two pence worth in (I live in England!)

    Make that three pence -- I have three things that help me tremendously:

    1. Early to bed, early to rise. YEAH this is old fashioned, and it may not work for everybody, but for me it makes a HUGE difference to my energy if I am up before 7. If I sleep in til 10 or later, I have to kick myself in the behind all day just to stay focused. If I can get out for a brisk walk before breakfast that works wonders too, because I automatically use the time to figure out what to aim to achieve during the first two hours of the day - by the time I get back in I am raring to go, with a supercharged feeling of already being ahead of the game... adrenalin is a great drug!!!

    2. Learn through teaching. I find one of the fastest ways to accumulate knowledge, and I mean good, precise targeted knowledge about a specific subject, is to find a way of teaching it to others. Take something you are trying to learn about, and challenge yourself to write an ebook, create an instructional video or even hold a semninar about it, as if you were setting yourself up as an "obvious expert" and in the process you'll find yourself automatically doing laser targeted research just fill in all the specific gaps in your knowledge. And it will force you to organze that knowledge into easily comprehensible form. BONUS: once you've got it done, SELL IT!!!!!!!!!!!!

    3. Most people probably know this one, but I have to include it - if any task seems too daunting because of its sheer scale, break it down into bite size chunks and tick them off one by one as they get done. For added spice, I often try to challenge myself to do it fast. For example: I can be a bit untidy, to say the least, and my computer room often gets into a complete mess, to the point where cleaning it up looks like a nightmare best avoided. But if I say: "OK - I am setting the timer for 5 minutes (or whatever) and I am going to pick up 37 objects and put them in their proper place" BY gosh, and by golly, she gets done real quick and I was having fun the whole time. This works for just about everything, subject to adjustment!

    Of course there are loads of people with natural work-ethic who think we're all pathetic for having to think this way, but probably they are too busy getting on with life to be reading this thread!! Hopefully, using some of these techniques can help the rest of us to join them!!!

  • Hi the way I stay Motivated is to create a "Goal" and then Plan how I am going to achieve it on a daily basis, creating MindMovies to help me stay positive and have the mind set to achieve the end result!!

    • I would recommend checking out http://www.Gtdagenda.com for an online project manager + motivation tool. Set up your Goals and Projects, and use the Vision Wall feature to create a vision board with pictures linked to your goals. The Vision Wall can be sent automatically to you by e-mail every morning, and looking at it for 30 seconds will surely motivate you.

  • Whenever i need some motivation, i take a quick look at success depicting collage i have made. It's very effective.

    Basically, you depict the abstract word success with images that you associate with success. For example, nice car, house, etc...

      I motivate myself for my needs , because I know only I have to do something to fulfill my needs.

      Looking at your visualization board daily and saying thank you.
      Going for a 1km jog every morning with the ipod listening to either t harv, dr.robert anthony or art williams.

    1.Predefine Goals and Tasks to be completed

    2.Apply your thoughts and Images,It will give you extra energy in advance and prepare for the coming task.

    3.Dont do anything untill you feel smt to do

    4.Its time to act,It would be an auto response if u have passed the above two steps.

    5.All this stuff Thoughts Images Action results will keep you Motivated................

  • I motivate myself by thinking "what will be the outcome in the future what i am doing today". Just think of the ants, they store as many foods as they can during summer, and when rainy days come, they would still have foods to eat even without working.
  • For me, just go to the room , quiet room, and make a list of your problems (or business target), after you put some words in the paper, and think how to solve it 1 by 1, decide which one is important, ask somebody if needed, just relax while doing it. You'll feel much better.

    Maybe its because you write in paper, you feel you're BIGGER than the problem, so its much easier to solve it

    For me, if I am organized I am more productive. As trivial and obvious as this may sound, I routinely make daily lists of things I want to do. I think the key is to make the list the night before. That allows me to reflect on what I accomplished that day and my task list is ready to go first thing in the morning so I don't waste time sitting there wondering what to do. Hope that helps.

  • Think about how long you are delaying your end goal if you stop doing what you know you need to in order to reach that goal.

    This is especially effective when I am laying in the bed.

    The key is to ALWAYS set more goals once you attain the previous ones. You are either growing or dying, there is no in between.

  • I have noticed that when I perform tasks that are part of some not so fun project it makes it easier for me to stay motivated longer. Taking a day off is too risky for me. Sunday is the only exception.
  • First of all, you have to realize that every thing you do is all a part of "the process" and without that boring step, you wouldn't have the same results.

    So the question to ask yourself is, "How much do I want [this ideal situation] to come true?"

    For me, whenever I start to doubt anything or create friction for myself because I don't want to do the boring tasks, I tell myself, "I'm in the process of building my online business!" I know that having the online business I dream of 24/7 includes boring tasks, but since I want it so bad, I just do it! (Not to sound all Nike on you guys- haha) It just excites me to know that I can build my own biz from scratch online- the possibilities are ENDLESS on the internet!!! That's what keeps me going.

    Option #2- Outsource If YOU don't want to do it, I know there are plenty of other people out there who will.

  • I keep one thing in mind and one thing alone. Here's the realization i came to, "anyone can achieve anything, but we can't achieve anything without anyone."

    That is enough to keep me motivated.

  • The purpose of a certain task keeps me motivated.

    I am highly motivated by tasks that are most beneficial to children and families.

    Even if the task is strenuous and annoying, I will definitely find strength to do it knowing that many children and families will profit from my efforts.
  • I always remember that when I get to the point where I don't feel like doing something, this is the same point that will contribute to my success and separate me from those who are unsuccessful. We all do the things we feel like doing. Successful people do things even when they don't feel like doing them.

    • I always think that with motivation a lot is made of various techniques, but at the end of the day, you either do something or you don't. I don't think people necessarily need to "motivate themselves" as much as they need to just do whatever it is they want to do.

      That said, I have personally found that if at the end of every day I write down what I've done, I become more productive. What you write down clearly shows you your actions for that day, and you becoming more aware of how you have spent your time. If your only actions have been watching television, drinking tea, and thinking about doing something productive, when you write it down you'll realise this, and the next day you may be inclined to actually do something productive instead of just thinking about it.

  • Get a big Post-It note and write down your most PAINFUL thought or fear. Stick it right in front of your monitor. Tell me if it doesn't move you.
  • I like to think about what I would like to achieve by working on my business (my weight loss oriented website). I always remind myself that the work I am doing now (producing content regularly, promoting my website through various marketing means, working on getting my site ranked, etc.) is well worth my effort even though I may not see results in some time.

    I like to picture what it would be like to be financially care free and all of the benefits that would come along with it. No seriously, I literally close my eyes and try to hold onto that amazing feeling of reaching my goal. This is what keeps me going.
  • I just look at my bank account, that's enough of a motivation to get going.
  • First, I will find out what's my passion, what really inspire me...If something that I don't feel like doing. I just acknowledge I don't like doing it. After that, I will ask myself what's the impact if I choose not to "like" it. If I can't bear with the impact...I will normally move forward and I am fully aware of this impact will cost me my life.

  • One thing I did when taking the GMATs is to print out success stories i found on forums and pin them on my desk to remind me every day that I must work hard so I can do well and then post my success story to help others.

    I have done the same with my im cpa marketing career...its very motivational to hear other peoples success stories!

  • Hi Guys and Gals
    I consult with many online and offline business owners and 90% suffer from motivational problems especially in a bad economy when everyone is drumming down how bad everything is... this can and does cause motivational problems.

    How I try to help is by making a business owner totally focus on their own business and forgetting about the economy, if your product is good and it is in demand than you will make sales... mindset has to be right and to get the required motivation you must be able to have a list of jobs to do to push your business or life forward.

    Make a list of requirements and then do them step by step... one at a time and each time you see something work out you will get more motivation.

    If you have a setback carry on and don't give up... it takes as much energy to give up as it does to succeed!

    Many people want everything now... and right now... you must motivate yourself to take one small baby step and the rest will follow.

    It's alot easier to be motivated about taking a small step then a large leap and you will see the benefits.
  • Every Year I write down my goals for the current year, the next 5 years and for the next 10. I have it on my wall so I see it every day. This is what motivate me, wanting to accomplish and succeed at my set goals.
