Does motivational stuff work?

I've enjoyed a lot of motivational information, quotes, and things, but I'm wondering, does the motivation you or I can get online really change people's actions? I've read a lot of things that criticize self-help books and motivational authors. Many of the arguments seem valid. What do you think?

  • It works to stay motivated, but I'm not sure that it actually works to earn lots of money. Lololololol.
  • Motivational stuff helps you succeed in the sense that it keeps you pushing forward.

It inspires you to achieve and reach new heights you never thought possible.

That's how it helps me anyway
  • Motivational stuff peaks fast (in one's head, that is), and dies fast . I was reading somewhere that motivation works but you gotta keep it up every day.

I think motivation is like a ray of sun on a cloudy day. It just lights up the place and everyone's spirits. Does it change what's essentially happening during that day? Probably not, but it makes it more pleasant.

You can't live only on motivational stuff. You have to work hard, otherwise all the great quotes in the world won't make a difference. But while you're sweating, it's nice to get some inspiration.

For example, today I read for the first time an older post on ProBlogger by Jon Morrow (How to Quit Your Job, Move to Paradise and Get Paid to Change the World) - I'd link to it but can't do that yet. To be honest, I had a low-spirits morning, but just reading this inspirational story made my day much more productive. So does motivational stuff work? For me, yes.

  • Staying motivated is often the key to success so whatever motivates you on a weekly, daily and sometimes hourly basis is what will keep you going.

Survival stories are interesting because they often share what kept them going until help arrived when there seemed to be no hope. What motivated them to keep treading water, or whatever situation they were in when they were in a hopeless situation.

Sometimes it is not just one thing that motivates you but many. One of the things that motivates me is my two toddlers.

I do not want them going through what I went through as a kid, we often did not have enough food to eat. I never want them to worry about when or if they will be able to eat or if they will have a roof over their heads.

It's also motivating to read other people's journey to success and knowing it was not a cake walk.
  • Understand that there are two types of motivation. One works, one does not work.

Intrinsic motivation, which comes from the inside, from you. And extrinsic, which comes from things, like money.

A good example of extrinsic motivation, is the carrot on a stick.

A good example of intrinsic motivation is when you joyfully read a heavy thousand page book, just because you are interested in the subject.

    Ponder this:

There is noise, and then there is music.

There are objects, and then there is art.

There are words, and then there is motivation.
  • Motivation works with the right mind set. In my opinion there is no blanket motivational method. Motivation has to be individualized. What motivates me, may not motivate you. You have to find the right thing that motivates you and stick with it.
  • Motivation works but I don't think it can just come out of thin air, something needs to spur it.
  • I believe that motivation has to come from the inside, not from outside sources.

For example, sometimes, you see something that motivates you greatly.
A story, an image, a quote, a movie etc. You feel ecstatic, exhilarated, and
say "I can do it". Maybe even get to work all pumped-up for some time.
But It doesn't last long. It quickly subsides. You must have had thousands
of such things in your life and they don't motivate you anymore.

Motivational and self-help stuff can help you, show you the way if you feel
lost and provide you the necessary "jolt" to start moving in the right direction.
But listening to it doesn't do much good, you need to actually DO the stuff it
presents, only you can improve yourself.

Zig Ziglar said, and I find it to be very much true, that motivation comes from action
and not the other way around. Action brings motivation, motivation brings energy.

I am just like that. When I'm idle the work seems distant and hard, I don't feel
like doing it. It is so hard to start. But, just as I force myself to start, it gets
easier and easier, I get immersed in it and want to do the best job possible.

I dare say that if there hadn't been for some of the authors out there I wouldn't
have realized many things that I have, and wouldn't be in the place I am right now,
and I continue to listen to programs and read the books all the time.

    • I like the qoute Zig Zigler.

The movitation gained by listening to motivational stuff is not everlasting, the effects wear off after some time.

But neither is showering, but he sure hope everybody keeps showering anyway.

  • I've found that I am a pretty hard worker but need to be constantly re-motivated to stay in the zone so for me, watching a short motivational video on youtube does work.
  • I agree with those who believe that motivational material does work, but the funnel needs to be filled frequently.

I think one of the biggest benefits of using motivational resources is that it helps you to focus more on positive thinking and positive expectation and helps to divert your mind away from unproductive negative thinking.

  • The funny thing is the "motivational stuff" needs to be tested. But, consistent with motivational material, your attitude about whether the motivational stuff will work will determine whether or not it does work.

If you think you can, you can. If you think you cannot, you cannot. Either way you are right.~Henry Ford
  • great thoughts buddy......
  • Motivational stuff realy work, it depends on the way you think. motivation is like a fuel that powers your engine. stay motivated and grow successfully, think positively and live a successfull life.
  • Don't go back, it works. It helps a lot it work for me.
  • Few hours ago, I learned this:

"“Motivation is what gets you started. Habit is what keeps you going.”

So do not rely on Motivation to bring you results however, habit does.

    Cheers,
    Dennis.
  • Motivational tapes and inspiring books do help but real motivation comes from DOING and not the other way round.
  • Motivational stuff works for me. Whenever I feel like quitting, I just go listen or watch something motivational, and keep on going.

The key is you have to take action after the motivation!
  • Motivational stuff works for different people in different ways. I dont think there is one method that is universally successful. I know some of my favourite authors are not appreciated at all by other people I know.

The main thing is: What creates the spark for YOU? Once you find the type of material that works for you it will tell you a lot about how you get motivated. Is it stories about others adversity or success, or perhaps it's explanation of mindset.

These external sources feed your motivational triggers and that is what can drive your behaviour.
  • Imagine you have a dirty floor, and you mop it. Even though the floor is already cleaned, it will be dirty some time later. you can't mop it once and done forever, when it looks dirty again you gotta clean it.

but how if the floor is dirty, you have the clean mop, but you're too lazy to even pick it up? Yes, the floor is still dirty

the mop is the motivational stuff, and the floor is your state of mind.
  • In my end, yeah it works about 70%
  • this is a good share
  • I think it is a matter of faith.. All motivational products out there won't work unless you have faith on them

    • You've already started to motivate yourself because it brought you here because maybe you said to yourself enough is enough. I'm looking into things that give me a mental edge because I think that's where it all starts.

  • Motivation is needed in our life every single day.
Yes, I totally believe it works =)
  • Motivational stuff works for those people who are open for a change, for self improvement and for those people who are really eager to achieve their goals in life.

While motivation can be a key factor, it is not everything..

The question is: What are you motivated by?

Some people are motivated when they hear about the possibility to generate 5 figures in monthly income. A different person might be motivated by the change to help others.

Like everything else, motivation is a question of perspective.

    • Exactly my point - you need to refuel. Most of the successful people you come across read books on motivation. This could be a book of quotations from people or someone's autobiography. Whatever works for you - but they keep themselves charged up by either reading more and more of that stuff, or keeping what works for them (quick quotes, etc.) in prominent locations where they can see it and believe in it once in awhile.

But you need to put yourself to work to be successful. If you refuel your car regularly but do not drive it, then what's the use, right ?
  • Of course it is

Imagine if you do something and its seems boring and you dont want to get work done

    And

You do something and you are really motivated to get work done and you enjoy that

    Which is better ?
