What books are you reading?

I read at least a couple books on marketing, persuasion,
copywriting a month. Sometimes I re-read things I've
read before.

Here are 3 I've read recently:

1. "The 4-Hour Workweek" - Timothy Ferriss - over-rated. It has some
provacative ideas in it but if you've been around IM for awhile much
of it won't be that informative. Recommend you get it from the library
rather than buy.

2. "The Twelve Factors of Business Success" - Kevin Hogan, Dave Lakhani, Mollie Marti -
simply awesome book on what success really requires. Questions and dissects
the common homilies and really gives it to you straight. Very critical-thinking
oriented. This is one I'll be mailing to people in my coaching program.

3. "The Closers" Ben Gay III, James W. Pickens - easily the most intense
and controversial sales/persuasion book I have read. It's ethical but it
discusses dirty tricks too. Treats the sales process like a battle, very
much like Art of War type stuff. If you read it with an open mind it can
take your thinking/ethics to a whole new level. If you are a knee-jerk
person about what is "right" in selling and business you might over-react
and throw it across the room. Not for wimps. High recommended but
advanced - if you do sales and need to be better it's good. For curiosity
seekers it probably won't make a lot of sense to you and might cause
you to perceive salespeople incorrectly.

  • I'm not reading marketing books at the moment, although I share your opinion: for who
is working in the marketing arena it is of paramount importance to be informed, to read
regularly and as much as possible (not at the expense of doing marketing rather than
just reading about it ;-) and also to re-read the best book you've read, which maybe
you read too long ago... it's easy to forget stuff and quite hard to know that you're forgetting
    something!

But in my case (not working in marketing any longer) right now I'm reading:

    * Hardcore diaries - by Mick Foley (wrestler and author of 4 bestsellers)
    and
    * Various reports by John Pilger, the BEST investigative journalist of these days, bar none.
In fact, possibily the last real investigative journalist still writing...

Last week I read Integratin Marketing by Mark Joyner and next week I'll read "Need to
know" by Paul Myers. Even though I don't do marketing anymore it's still a hobby I
    enjoy reading about ;°)

    Ciao,
    Saul

    • For business I've really enjoyed-
Ready, Fire, Aim- By Michael Masterson- Highly recommended for any entrepreneur, especially those looking to break through glass ceilings with their companies and products. His chapter on creating an OSS was worth the price alone.

      Also really enjoying Influence.

I know this is off topic, but no one here is reading game of thrones?!
  • Hi all! The 4Hour Workweek is part blog/success manual and its really entertaining.. I highly recommend it! Other than that its just my favorite blogs for now. I wish I had more time
  • i have read rich dad poor dad my robert kiyosaki, i like it very much, indeed it is very inspirational.
    • [ 1 ] Thanks
  • Currently I'm reading Social intelligence by Daniel Goleman, great book, though I only read 40 pages yet. It's very scientific, so if you're not interesting in reading a scientific approach to social intelligens, don't pick it up, because it's dry with many facts you have to remember.

the book I read before that one was Paulo Coelho's "The Alchemist", a fantastic book. He manage to twist personal development in a fantastic story, I really enjoyed it and have read it several times already.

    • How to Deal With Difficult People by Rick Brinkman

Coping with Difficult People: In Business and in Life by Robert Bramson

You might think these have nothing to do with success, but you would be wrong. I have a difficult person in my life. He is not going anywhere. Wasting time being upset by arguments or angry about unproductive behavior is an obstacle to my success. Learning how to handle my difficult person boosts my productivity and confidence.

I realize these may not interest other folks, but if you have a difficult person that is hindering your success, I highly recommend these books. And they are my answer to your question ... What books are you reading?

  • For the record I love 4 Hour Workweek.

    Currently reading:

Bob Proctor - You Were Born Rich - type of book you want to read over and over again.

    Also reading Buzzmarketing.
  • GeoffCruz is right-- 'How to Get Rich" By Felix Dennis is one the best I have read. The best thing about it is that this man is seriously rich and the book is finally written by someone who's been there and done that.

The others I had read recently are :

Rich dad's Series -- Almost all of them.
Getting Things Done -- By David Allen
Wild Swans - Jung Chang ( Read this if you want to know what pain and endurance is and what it takes to live through trouble)
  • I am an info absorber so the books I am currently reading or re-reading are:

    1. Scientific Advertising by Claude Hopkins

If you want to learn everyday basic ways to persuade people in advertising then this is the Bible. I am half way throught the short copy but have learned so much about advertising.

    2. Neuromarketing by Patrick Renvoise and Christophe Morin

This book is amazing is how our brains respond to advertising. It talks about the 3 types of brain (formed through evolution) and how to advertise to the primal brain which ultimately makes all decisions. It gives step-by-step instructions on how to persuade people with advertising.

    3. Watchmen

    I.....must....finish.....this.....by.....Friday. Awesome!

  • I've read some stuff about Felix Dennis's book. I'll have to

  • I'm reading One Small Step Can Change Your Life by Robert Maurer. So far I'm really liking it. I have a problem of getting overwhelmed with all that I have to do and this book has helped me break everything down into small steps.
  • I always like Robert Ludlums novels. Especially the Covert-op series. I would highly like to recommend the following Ludlum's Cover-op Series books and explore the thrilling life and the challenges and struggles that Jonathan Smith, Randi Russell, Peter Howell, Marty Zellerback and the rest of the group faced as they prevent bio-hazards threats being deployed and released in the world.

    1. The Hades Factor
    2. The Cassandra Compact
    3. The Paris Options
    4. The Lazarus Vendetta
    5. The Arctic Event

    Loved these stories.
  • Actually, I just came from the book store and piced up "Get Yours: How To Have Everything You Ever Dreamed Of And More."
  • I've recently finished reading Lee Iacocca's "Where Have all the Leaders Gone?". Good for a light read in these funny economic times. Takes the mind off of my Google Adwords Campaigns...

  • I recommend "Integrity" by Dr. Henry Cloud.

I gave this book to a fellow business collegue for a gift one year. He liked it so much, he went out and bought every copy in the city and gave it to all of his friends.
  • So I went to Barnes and Noble last night to have some hot chocolate. I picked up the book Instant Rapport by Michael Brooks and read the whole thing straight through. Although it was written in 1989 it is very insightful. It is about NLP and human communication. I learned so much about communication and people that I am thinking about using some of the ninja tactics in copy and maybe turning it into a course. You should check it out.

      I read 4 hour week and it's cool but a bit over-rate.

One of my favourite books is 'Ask and is shall be given' by Ester Hicks. Actually, imo anything by EH is worth devouring.
  • I'm not reading any marketing books right now. I'm, however, reading Ayn Rand Fountainhead.

  • I love reading history books. Currently, i'm reading Making with Friends with Hitler. The book basically discusses how some countries made friends with Hitler so as to save their countries from Hitler's expansionism.
  • Think and Grow Rich by Napolean Hill - (Actually didn't enjoy most of it)

4 hour work week - Tim Feriss ( Doesn't completely apply to me,.. yet
  • themindvoid,

Most people have to read Think And Grow Rich 2-3 times to really pick up the message and let it sink in.

I suggest you grab yourself a copy of another Napoleon Hill book. It's called "The Laws Of Success In 16 Lessons" Originally it was a 16 volume set and in the last 10 years or so, it was compacted into a two volume set and just recently, it was finally published as a complete single volume.

It covers all of the work that Napoleon Hill did interviewing over 500 successful people about the exact reasons of their success. The work is cumulative of all of that research, interviewing and data and is a great read.

Grab it at amazon for 10 bucks...

  • I've read tons of books in the past on success. I actually haven't read any recently. You know, all the classics. Napoleon Hill, Anthony Robbins, etc.

Here are a few that I read in the past year
    - Einsteins Dreams
    - Think and Grow Rich ( for the 5th, maybe more time )
    - 7 secrets to success - Stephen Covey
    - Insurance Commander
    - Over the Top - Zig Ziglar
    - The Bus - Jerome Bettis
    - Millionaire Mind
    - Never eat alone
    - The Secret
    - How Full Is your bucket
    - The Shack
and probably a ton more, this is just on the top of my head

I liked the Shack. A friend recommended it to me. It was nice to read an actual relaxing book rather than a "business" book. I didn't have to think much and there was a story to it.
  • My all-time favorite in the personal development field is Psycho-Cybernetics by Maxwell Maltz (I recommend the Dan Kennedy version.) It's a great combination of the science of success (from an experienced medical doctor) and practical tips on how to get better results in your life.

I've just re-read The War of Art by Steven Pressfield. He provides some great insights into why we sometimes resist doing the things we need to do and how to overcome that feeling.

    Best regards

    Robert
  • Look at the books by Dr. Tim Irwin. He is a new writer. His first book was about his experience running with the bulls in Pamplona and uses that as a metaphor for succeeding in business. His most recent book is more of a self-help book in which he analyzes 6 CEOs in the past two years that have failed miserably and why.

The book shows you how he used social media to build his brand and create a very successful business. It's also written in the exact style that Gary speaks in: Honest, brash and gregarious.

It's a great read and only takes a couple of hours as it's short and to-the-point.

My latest read: "When good intentions run smack into reality"
    Author: Brian Klemmer

It talks about obstacles that often prevent us from obtaining what we want. It talks about the power of keeping your word - and using that to build lasting relationships in both your personal and professional life.

  • Just read "Doing Good Works" by a fellow warrior, not going to push any advert here, he asked me through a common thread to review it for him and I was impressed with it very much. It has a bit of everything, from motivation to realizing potential, a tad of the author's personal experience and true to the title, how to use your time, money or anything that you can give towards doing some good deeds for people.

As a side note, a lot of good material comes out of our fellow warriors in general, yes it's hard to separate as there are many book writers here but there are definitely a lot of creative individuals among us here.

It all about why we are brought up from a young age through parenting & schooling to believe exactly what we're taught & to except a future type of lifestyle through programming.

He goes through the techniques of reprogramming your mind to except new challenges & potential new wealth & to get rid of all the previous negative thoughts & programming.

It's an excellent book & has to be read at least twice to fully understand how to, go about changing your thought processes & negativity & turn in it into something very powerful & rewarding.

  • Just read "Law of Success in 16 Lessons" by Napoleon Hill - found it in eBook version at only 4.97 at napoleonhill-lawofsuccess dot com

Napoleon Hill's The Law of Success in Sixteen Lessons answers every question you could possibly have about what it takes to be successful.

The Law of Success in Sixteen Lessons has over 1,100 pages of success secrets from 500 of America's most successful people of all time. It took 20 years to write but you can start learning from it soon.
Commissioned by Andrew Carnegie and given personal introductions to the likes of Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, John D. Rockefeller, Alexander Graham Bell and hundreds of others, Napoleon Hill's research and study of successful people made him the best-selling success author of all time.
Of all of his works, none have ever matched his landmark The Law of Success in Sixteen Lessons. First published in 1928, these sixteen lessons became the world's first comprehensive philosophy of personal achievement.
In Napoleon Hill's own words: "The purpose of the Law of Success course is to enable you to find out how you may become more capable in your chosen field of work. To this end you will be analyzed and all of your qualities classified so you may organize them and make the best possible use of them."

    • I think - no i believe that you need to be rich inside of you before to be able to get rich outside....To illustrate this : imagine a tree - with apples - some of them are really nice but most of them are not good - then the gardener decide to cut all the branches where apples are not good...stay only the best apples...Hey sound nice, isn'it? Wrong next season the same tree produce the same apples - some are really nice but most of them are not good...
The gardener ask Why is possible? One voice in the middle of the sky say to him : Because fruits come from the root...not from the branches...

You get the idea...then my best book to illustrate all of this and more, really more in fact...are two books in fact.

First : The power of intention from Dr Wayne Dyer -
Second : One Decision from Judith Wright

Once is done, once your root are really good and ready to earn money or be sucessful, then it's time to move on practical book as this one:
Millionaire by thirty from R. Andrew

    • Lately, it's been more Jay Abraham.

I stay up until 10 or 11 listening to every word of one of his Mastermind seminars in the 90's. The biggest problem people have online (or off) trying to make money, is they keep searching for 10,000 new hot ways to make money. People are quick to search for new ways to make hot money. They are not quick going back to old ways. When they should be re-reading or re-listening to something that is proven.

A diffusion of thought is not going to produce breakthrough wealth.

Seminar speakers or authors who keep writing book after book after book, have mastered something. Jay has probably mastered 200 or 300 distinctions. They just fly over peoples heads.

If you don't have the results you want, you haven't mastered the right things.

Malcolm Gladwell also has some great articles from the new yorker. A good prerequisite for Gladwells material is Robert Cialdini's Influence.

    • "The Science of Getting Rich" by Wallace D. Wattles. I have read through it about 5 times and there is a chapter on Gratitude that I try to read every morning because it allows me to start my day being grateful which seems to always help me be more productive during the day.

Another book I just started is "You Were Born Rich" by Bob Proctor. I haven't finished it but it has some great stories in it describing some of the fundamentals of the Law of Attraction.
  • The Science of Getting Rich by Wallace D. Wattles - I've been reading this book over and over by reading a couple of pages each night prior to retiring. The ideas in this book must sink into my subconscious mind and that's why I read it over and over.

I'm also reading Maximum Achievement by Brian Tracy. Just started and finished chapter 1.

  • Hello everyone, I have only read adventurous and suspense thriller books.
  • I am reading now Millionaire Fastlane by MJ DeMarco.
  • I am now just finishing How To Get Rich by Felix Dennis which is refreshing because

    A. He created a multi million wealth in a Market outside of the 'make money' Market so the book is not written to be sold for the benefit of the author.

    B. It is not the usual gung-ho 'how to' book. He tempers his advice with his own mistakes and highlights how hard it is to get rich, and the sacrifices needed to get there

    C. It is an entertaining read, part advice, part auto-biography, so a fascinating read of a guy who has been there and has many tales to tell

  • I am reading PD for Smart People by Steve Pavlina, and got hooked to Game of Thrones book series (Songs of Ice and Fire). And yes, they are better than the show, although it is the best television I watched in a while.
