How To Break Negative Thought Patterns

Many times do you find yourself fighting a constant battle between being pessimistic or negative and being more optimistic and positive.

You probably already know that being negative doesn't help much, but sometimes you feel you can't help it.

Here's what I started practicing that began to help me out...

You must first and foremost recognize and acknowledge the feeling! If you don't it will take control of you and before you know it you'll be kicking the dog, slamming the door etc.

As you acknowledge the thought, (and before you let it build more power over you) you then regain more control and power over it. Immediately replace it with a positive thought. You can search for uplifting quotes, messages, articles, or even come to this section of the forum.

The negative thoughts will start to fade away....

Keep putting more positive thought in your mind and before you know it...You may even find yourself optimistic, enlightened, happy, or motivated. Try to think of the negative thought now and you will even see it as a small "hiccup".

As your self-consciousness increases, and you keep practicing this. It becomes easier and easier to deal with thoughts that don't serve you well.

    • I agree, it is not healthy to be negative all the time. The world can certainly be a more enjoyable experience if you change your perspective. However, ignorance to the negative is not healthy either. There is a balance, and awareness is the most important.

  • This used to happened to me all the time but when I started attending Church, hearing the word of God. I realize that all we need to do is to believe all that we ever need and want in life will be given to us. "Delight yourself in the LORD and he will give you the desires of your heart." He is there, He can hear us, He knows everything what is inside our heart. Just talk to Him and He will answer.

  • Exactly. Stop the negativity right at the beginning when it you feel it's coming to you or it will "take over" and the positivity is gone.

  • Nice article about getting through the day in a happy mood. You have to programme yourself everyday to be positive..

    Also I believe you need to spent less time with negative persons. One our with a pessimist and you need to be twelve hours with a optimist to get your motivation back.

    • Definitely spending less time around negative people and more with positive people helps a lot. People's energy can be transfered, negative people will "infect" you but positive people will maintain your motivation and inspire you.
  • I think the easiest way to break the negative thought pattern is just to get yourself preoccupied by doing things. Then you will have less time to think about the negativities

  • It also helps when you surround yourself with positive people. Having a bright outlook is contagious, so is pessimism.
  • Changing your state or environment helps a lot as well.
  • You know, you can tell from my signature that I have a deep faith - but it is a new kind of faith - of inspiration, of self inquiry where I can see, no really, it is more FEEL, when there is negativity in me, in the conversation, in the deal, in the buy.... whatever. The trick to break negative patterns and thoughts - first, pay attention, right? and then, be brave to seek a higher vibration/feeling inside - by whatever means you do it. Yahoo!
  • Yes, so true! I have practiced meditation for years and found that acknowledge the bad feeling is the one 'shortcut' to break the negative pattern! It is all about to forgive & accept yourself peacefully and embrace positive changes...

    • I started with simple "personal development" leading me to making other discoveries such as nlp, hypnosis, eft, etc. But as I kept going, and connecting the dots, more and more it lead to a more "spiritual" side. Everything is energy, everything is vibration. Upon discovering and understanding this concept brings us up to a new kind of consciousness that few people know. I started practicing meditation not too long ago as well and wow, you can't fully describe it until you experience it yourself. Thanks for sharing that Erdy.

    • It is challenging for sure Jillian. It's like most people are walking around like robots. When you start "waking up" to this new consciousness so many things start to make sense, suddenly you start to see the real you, and your connection to others and the things that surround you. You start to see the world in a completely different way, a good way that is.
