Increased focus can also be achieved by chewing gum or smoking a cigarette

Do you agree and tried it?

  • No I have not tried it. I do not smoke but it sounds interesting. Is there a psychological aspect to it?
  • I am a smoker and have been trying to quit for years! I do not encourage anyone to smoke at all, in fact I strongly DISCOURAGE to smoke!

However, to answer your question....at least with me unfortunately the answer is YES it does increase my focus. I have no idea why though? I did notice the occasions I did try to quit smoking, my focus dropped fast!

    • I'm with Mark on this one. At the age of 41, I've been smoking for well over half of my life (started smoking regularly at 14). It is a beast of a habit to break. I've tried electronic cigarettes, patches, gums, hypnosis, and even acupuncture, all to no avail. I have managed to finally get my smoking down to less than half a pack a day, but haven't managed to take that last step yet. My plan is to be smoke free by the end of the year.

Unfortunately, smoking is one of those things that help me to focus, so quitting is a double whammy.
  • Nicotine does make people more alert.
  • hunger and homelessness increase foduc on what is important as well ..

but being clear on what you want and why yo want it.. bring the greatest focus ..as i am learning in the past few days

    • Chew the right gum and it might work. I used ThinkGum a lot during finals in high school and early college. I thought it worked pretty well.
  • so what if you chew the nicotien gum ...is it double the focus ?

    • It does seem that way with cigarettes or cigars - I don't know why but I always turn to a drug (coffee, food (chocolate), nicotine, cannabis).

They always help me to achieve something I'm procrastinating or just don't have the motivation to do.. I know it's not good.. but it works..
  • I don't think so have effective.
Let make yourself comfortable all of time will help you work with more focus and effective.
And when you know what reasons to do it will help you have more motivation to done this work.
  • I disagree. Smoking kills. It is hard to focus if you are coughing or in pain.

  • Hmm strange topic.

If you mean doing a cigarette/chewing gum/food/drink break on a regular basis during your work it pretty much sounds like the pomodoro technique without the timer.
And whitout ruining your health and others'. Let alone the wallet.

    • I think chewing gum may be helpful but I don't see how smoking a cigarette can help you focus!
