Hello all,

I wanted to share a bit of my experience in terms of using exercise and nutrition to stay positive and productive.

Eating: did you ever notice how certain foods will make you sluggish and kind of drive you more towards the couch and the remote controller as opposed to your computer or notebook + pen? I used to get that awful feeling after a huge pasta or carb-loaded meal, so I'm staying away from that stuff now.
I also decided that the only snacks I'll have around my computer desk are in the form of a carrot, and very rarely an apple or a banana, but not more than one per day. I mentioned that because mindless eating is not all that great for you.

Exercise: I'm currently doing Insanity (I think it's my fourth time doing it), so there's little to no breaks in terms of exercise. But if I'm not doing a program and allow myself more than three days without exercise, my mood tends to decline and I become less productive and motivated to get any work done. So if you experience similar patterns, the answer is simple: allow yourself some time to exercise daily or every other day.

It doesn't have to be the kind of workout that ends up with you having to rest on the floor before finding the strength to get back on your feet (that was me last night ); it just have to be challenging enough to make the today version of you a bit better than yesterday. Come to think about it, so does working on your business, doesn't it?

    I personally have found this to be true in the past several days. When I avoid sugar I sleep better. When I do not eat bread I sleep better When I take a 30-60 minute walk everyday I sleep better.

    When I sleep better I get a lot more done the next day.

    • The reason why people become unhealthy is because of their lifestyles. For
      example, you can only walk if you’re coming into the shower from your room,
      walking back and forth from your garage, or when you already reached your office
      from the parking lot.

      In this manner, it is clear that “walking” is almost 10-15
      percent of our daily activities. This is very alarming! Since “walking” is the
      best exercise according to many health specialists, people should think that they
      shouldn’t be lazy to walk every morning and should proportion of 40-60 percent of
      our daily activities.
  • Great post. I agree.. what you put in your body has an affect on your mood and your energy level throughout the day. Go organic, eat lots of fruits and veggies, nuts, granola bars etc. Cut back on sodium, sugar, processed food, soda, fried food... and junk! Your body will thank you in the future.

  • i am 35 and in the last year my body started rejecting processed foods ..i have long been unable to consume high fructose corn syrup ..and i have almost given up red meat...amd would cut out more meat if i wasn't cooking for my parents who i am primary care giver for ..

    I start out the day cooking up scrambled eggs cooking up onions garlic a small amount of meat then mushrooms ..and scramble the eggs adding a bunch of spices ..and a couple table spoons of ground flax seed .

    though in the last few weeks i have not lost weight ..i feel so much better trying to get as much nutrition in at breakfast .It just got warm enough to get out and walk around ..

    my back is not in good shape..but it is getting better with the heavy use of flax seed lol ..

    moving is great
  • hydration is important as well but if you are drinking water but not getting real food in your body ..just stuff formulated to taste like food you find in boxes ... you will bleach out your system ..

    but if you eat real food and stay hydrated it is the start of health ..then more in ways that promote and keep you healthy .. it is much easier to do that every day ...than dieting
  • food is one of my favorite subjects now ..because i have learned how to cook healthy good tasting food ..but i am taking care of my parents and they like the junk to much..even though their health is failing from eating it for a lifetime..and together they are paying like 400$ a month co pay for meds ..

    seeing how the way they eat has caused so many problems with their health and in the last two years they have been unable to take care of themselves and watching them pay so much for junk food and medical bills ..and after running my health down with crappy jobs that have taken their toll.

    I am using food to restore my health and giving my body what it need to repair the damage ..and build a strong immune system..got through this winter with being very sick.

    now i am looking to build wealth in ways to maintain my health and well being ..and be rich enough in 10-20 years to afford the age slowing or reversal therapies ..to avoid the problems of getting old ..

    start out with one change to your eating ..when you see the benafits and find it easier to keep doing ..change something else ..test and try different things .. to see what works for you .
  • Eating is one best part of our lives. This makes us positive the whole day especially if we have a full stomach.

  • Personally I find that a full stomach isn't that helpful when you want to get work done. Instead it makes one kind of sluggish.
    But yeah, food is great - if you develop a healthy relationship with it.

    My triple play is lots of good water, just enough healthy food, and daily exercise of some sort.
    I also agree that there are some really damaging food items that will cause your blood sugar levels to become volatile: bread (or high carbs - gluten) & sugar. These practically put me into a coma when I over do them. I can't say I have cut them out of my eating habits altogether, but I have cut down on them dramatically and . . . what a difference in Energy!

    • Speaking of sugar and carbs in general, I heard a doctor mention once that they are more addictive than tobacco.

      I think he was right. I smoked a long time ago. Giving it up was hard, but it did happen. Cutting sugar out seems way harder.

      Would you agree with the statement that doctor made?

      I actually have another one for you: sugar kills more people than tobacco. True or false?

  • Food is very important in our daily lives as well as exercise! I have been taking a break from running up until a couple weeks ago when I started getting back into it, but after a few months of not much REAL exercise my legs have totally gone to shit lol and I definitely gained a few pounds.

    Diet is another thing that in America especially we are totally screwing ourselves on. We wonder why so many cases of autism are popping up here along with extremely high cancer rates etc. Take a look at what the average American eats daily and you'll start to wonder if that could be the cause...

    • I completely agree about the importance of good nutrition. I'm about 80% vegan now, and I'm so much more productive and alert than I was when I was in college, shoving my face full of red meat, high-fat dairy, refined grains, and sugary snacks on a daily basis.

      I highly recommend that everyone try a healthy diet of mostly fruits/veggies/whole grains/beans for 30 days, just to see how you feel compared to your old diet. And if you don't notice any change for the better, no harm done.

  • My biggest diet changes which have made a world of difference to my life:

    1. High alkaline diet: eating 70-80% veggies, fruit and nuts. Then a bit of carbs and protein. No artificial anything.

    2. Proper food combining: never eat carbs + proteins. always eat fruit alone. carb + veggies or protein + veggie is ok.

    Sticking to these two together I stay really, really fit and I feel totally energized. I lost 30 pounds.

    If you are trying to lose weight, clear your mind, or get more energy - I really recommend Googling high alkaline diet and proper food combining.
  • I agree with you 100%! Eating right and Exercising can really keep your mind and body on the right track. Really with anything you do. I know what you mean about "Insanity"! That work out program is not to mess with! haha!

      Don't you also realize that you get less sick when you eat right and exercise?! I started an active life since last October and have not been sick. I usually get sick really easy especially in winter time, but I made it just fine and great!

      Those docs on Netflix are helping me (us) to get back on track. I watched maybe 5/6 documentaries they have. I think I watched couple of them twice and it's a good thing to watch those again once in awhile, because it's like a reminder for us why we have to eat right.

  • Definitely agree with your post..Eating right plus Exercising helps you more active and productive the whole day. Plus you get a really good sleep. Feels good when you sweat.

      Great point - What if I get hit by a bus - and that's what cheat days are for. To me, there's cheat weekends, and honestly I cheat with very little guilt and I'm still making progress towards my goals.

  • start by changing the source of your sugar ..when i make coffee at home i sweeten it up with honey and cinnimon ..

    try to remove anything that was not in the human diet before 40 years ago.. the problem with wheat or bread is it is almost all gmo ..made from crops designed to kill the stuff that wants to eat it .

    i can't eat red meat anymore ..and chicken is starting to hit that point where i can't eat it ..so meat wise i go with pork and non farmed fish ..

    i still consume milk ..but find it really doesn't have much taste . if i could replace it with coconut milk i would ..my body is craving a more tropical diet ..

    learn to make your own salad dressings and many of the other easy things to make that you buy from the store in a bottle ..use the best quality oil ,vinigar and other ingredients ..for your dressing and marinades . took my cooking up a star or two .

    a lot of natural herbs and spices used to add flavor also have health bonuses ..differen kinds of mushrooms have very big effects on immune system ..i got through this winter without a major knock me on my butt cold ..


    you need carbs and sugars .. like you need fats and cholesterol . it is the source and the method of preparation that matter
  • Thank you for the share Tudor. This is a topic I'm very passionate about because fairly recently I was suffering from some serious health problems (heart & digestive).

    In a nutshell, doctors and 3 specialists were unable to fix my issues. Then I watched a few food documentaries that changed my life (Food Matters, Hungry For Change, Food Inc., and a few others).

    I invested in a Vitamix Emulsifier which has a 2 horsepower motor and I began drinking vegetable smoothies (with some fruit in it). All organic and sometimes I would throw in flax seed, hemp oil, etc. I also stopped drinking soda, energy drinks (they increase the risk of strokes big time), processed sugar, and stayed away from all processed foods.

    Within one month I lowered my blood pressure back to optimal levels (117/78), nearly got rid of my SVT (rapid heart beat), quit my coffee habit, and my energy levels and mental focus went through the roof.

    I make it a point to take breaks during my work days and I walk no less than 25 miles a week.

    It has been such a huge life and game changer for me that I plan on preaching nutrition and exercise to anyone who will listen.

    If I had known that one could feel this great and get off blood pressure and heart medicine by eating raw foods (veggie smoothies) and changing what they eat, what they habitually think about, and how often they exercise, I would have done this a lot sooner.

    It's too bad that it took serious health issues to get me back on track.

    • That's an amazing transformation you're sharing there Rod! You have every reason to be proud of yourself and share it with others who need the inspiration and motivation.

      Sometimes it takes a great deal of pain in order to motivate one to turn their life around. I don't think there's anything wrong with that and we should be grateful for being given the opportunity to make that major shift in our lives.

      Better late than never, as they say.

      What I find inspiring is that you found what works for you and kept at it until it delivered results, and even more, you turned it into a lifestyle. Most people think they can "go on a diet", lose some lbs. or kgs. and return to their previous lifestyle. Until they realize that the model is flawed, nothing will change in their lives and instead of making progress, their fat loss/gain yo-yo is going to take them to lower and lower quality of life.

    • Isn't that sad? What does that say about the state of medicine today?
      These "experts" couldn't look at your diet and see that something was
      wrong? But I guess that the answer is too simple to charge you such
      huge medical bills.

      Great life story. I've been a vegetarian for over 25 years now so if
      you'd had asked me I would have told you DIET.

  • Eating: I do a lot of juicing raw fruits and veggies for the boost, and otherwise mostly organic food in my meals. HUGE difference since changing how I eat a year or so ago. Liferegenerator on youtube is a great resource for that.

    Exercise: Insanity? Awesome! I'm just past the first week of that program, my first time doing it. Physical activity releases serotonin in the brain, which lifts your mood and makes you all around more happy and productive.

  • In a nutshell, keeping your body in top shape keeps your mind healthy.
    You have to stop thinking of it as a hobbit. Make a part of your daily routine! That's the most challenging thing part (for me, that is!) but once you're there the reward is really worth it!

  • Great Post. I totally agree with you that what you eat will affect the rest of your day. I try to exercise first thing in the morning to energize me ...hey, after doing Insanity, you can't help but think you can take on the world!

    • Thanks Susan! After doing Insanity anything seems within reach, including taking on the world.
      For instance, yesterday I pushed myself to do a 60-minute workout (Max Interval Circuit) even though I had eaten 4 hours before and I was already hungry. It was incredibly hard, but the way I felt afterwards was more than worth it.
      Honestly I feel sorry for anyone who won't or can't exercise.

  • Want to know a great eating plan that will help you not only remain sharp mentally, but also keep you in great health? The Paleo Diet! That's my eating routine. It's funny that you mention carb-laced foods causing you to feel sluggish, because Paleo users either don't consume carbs or consume very little. Carbs do in fact cause you to feel lazy and make you fat.

    • This would be a good time to confess - I've been on Paleo for over 4 months now, and in addition to my workouts, it's been one of the best changes I've made in my lifestyle.
      To me it's not a diet - it became a part of my life.
      I don't mention being on it because many people are either reluctant to try it or have tried it and missed carbs too much and gave up.
      I'm glad to hear it's working out for you though.

    • Another vote for Paleo! My wife and I are two weeks in and I've lost 8 lbs already and feel amazing. We make incredible recipes, like cauliflower pizza we had last night.

      I personally feel that wheat is one of the biggest poisons in our food supply today. Sugar's a big one too, although it has it's place for instance post-workout especially with something like insanity. I take a whey proten/dextrose shake with a little pink salt after my workout and believe me it does wonders. This is straight from Loren Cordain BTW.

      I wonder how many ADHD symptoms would clear up in kids if parents just removed wheat, dairy, and sugars from their diets?

  • rucco ..it is not as much the wheat ..it is how it is grown and processed and then when it is baked with high fruictose corn syrup and other modern chemical..

    the way our food is treated now dairy..milk and yogert and other thing are filled with toxins and dead food .. cheese is a bit better because the milk used to make it can't be proccess as much ..

    now suger ..if you get sugars from fruit and real honey and consuming it with fiber filled food .

    non of the stuff that has been in our food supply for hundreds/thousands of years is itself toxic when prepared properly..

    and the thing about wheat is that many cultures who grew it so more value in breweing beers with it than baking bread ..

    but at the same time it matters if your ancestors consumed the food and developed the enzymes to break it down.. with dairy about 90 percent of people do not have the ability to digest cows milk ..many are better of with goat milk or much smaller animals ..

    sugar has the same effect on the brain as drugs..it also has the same tolerance building effect ..so you need to consume more and more over time ..so over the last 30 years people have pulled fat out of the diet and replaced it with refined sugers that are a low grade cocaine ..
  • Since January I have been lifting weights and trying my best to get out and run on the street (not going so well). It makes a marked difference in your well being, I understand what everyone was getting at before now. I also stopped smoking too, which makes an even bigger difference I feel!

  • My eating habits are a work in progress and I have noticed the same thing about myself - that heavy meals make me feel very sluggish.

    It's like, I know how I am supposed to eat but it's another thing entirely putting it to practice. I am working on the fact that I tend to gravitate towards salty, crunchy foods when stressed out - and the ones I crave are NOT healthy.

    I exercise, too. I tried getting back into running but I have gained wait and it's been unpleasant. Exercising and water are two of the best energizers I know. That, and a balanced diet.

    • You are absolutely right on the money. Nutrition and exercise is essential. Then, why I am unable to do this? Well, when you are raised eating the worst food which is high fat, mounds of sugar and soda which rots your teeth, you become addicted to this. I have tried so many ways to have better nutrition but I lose weight and gain it right back. It becomes a down right disease. You become sluggish, not feeling good and the worst part is you can become diabetic. I am on the verge of that. It lies dormant in your body and for the first time, it can flare up and before you know it, you are taking insulin shots. Its not worth it and because we are living longer, you suffer so when you get past a certain age, it's almost too late. But it still can be preventable and losing weight can be the most important thing you can do. Of course it is a struggle as you have to push yourself. But it still can be done and live maybe a little longer taking care of yourself. Which brings up an important point and that is you need the energy to make a success out of any business and your mindset is geared to doing that. You are probably wondering why I am posting this. I believe that everyone who becomes successful not only have the determination but feeling good and having energy is a big factor in what you do in life. You can tackle any online as well as offline business and succeed in it. All this is from my point of view and if I am posting this in a place where it might not belong, then I apologize. No offense to anybody. I came here because I like to see what is happening and I wanted to post something.

  • I've been working out 3 days a week since I was 12 years old. It's the best habit I've ever formed.

    When life throws you challenges, going to the gym can help burn away some of that stress. The human body has a natural way of dealing with stress. When you workout, those natural hormones get produced and helps you through your stressful time. No need for Prozac.

    Eating healthy and organically helps deal with stress as well.

  • Carbohydrates are actually good for you. Many people who are inexperienced in terms of nutrition see carbs as a bad macro nutrient. The truth is that carbs fuel your muscles, and help them recover at a faster pace. This same principle goes for protein. The true macro nutrient which has a bad effect on your body if overdone is fat, and even fat is important to an extent. You have to find a balance, don't stop eating pasta just because it has carbs.
  • Good thread! I like to excercise first thing in the morning to get the day started. Mainly gym or jogging, and after that a HUGE breakfast. Speaking of which, I think it's been called "the most important meal of the day" for a reason - a good breakfast can get that get-up-and-go feeling to last throughout the day.
  • Really like this thread. When I eat a big meal it's almost impossible to do anything productive for at least 2 hours. That's why I tried to eat less for dinner so I can do more work at night.

    What works very well for me is to walk at least 1 hour per day, it helps to clear my thoughts and to come up with new ideas and breakthroughs on projects I work on.

    The best thing I know when it comes to exercise is to get in an hour or two at the gym lifting weights. I've been consistently lifting 3 days a week for almost 6 months now, and you can really see the difference. Both in looks and strength ha ha.
  • I have read it somewhere once that foods have certain energy levels or mhz's. Those foods which are highly alkaline will give you more energy and the opposite for those which are acidic-based. A good lifestyle and healthy diet is indeed two of the important factors for a success mindset.
