Tidy Work Space = Organized Mind?

I don't know about you guys, but I tend to find that the messier it is around my work area, the more stress I feel when I'm trying to work. I have a harder time keeping my thoughts in order, and I have a constant laundry list of things to do floating around haphazardly in my head.

Of course, there's a difference between having a lot of things and being messy. You can have a lot of things, but still have them displayed in an organized manner or put away. Being messy is just having stuff in places, just because that's where it ended up, as opposed to being there because you WANTED it to be there.

What about you?

Can you work in a messy environment?
Do you keep your work area messy, cluttered, or neither?
What does your "Bat Cave" look like? XD lol

  • NO! everything on my desk must be organized. The only thing that looks "cluttered" is my wall next to my monitor... it's covered in posted notes with motivational quotes.

But here's a tip... Write a laundry list of all the things you need to do by the end of the day. Then, work in 2-3 hour blocks undisturbed. If you don't have the luxury of having that much time, then do 30 minute blocks.

Don't go on Facebook or twitter or wherever your online hangouts may be. Shut your phone off and just work.

You'll be surprised at how much you can get done.
  • I agree with you about our work space. I seem to be more relaxed and productive when my work space is neat and organized. I can work in a messy space but don't seem to get as much done and accomplished.
So, I guess we all need to have clean and organized work space. Good thought.

In my opinion a neat desk and organized work space means better work performance.
  • What is an untidy work space? It could still be organised. For example, I have notebooks sprawled out all over the place, pens everywhere and various other objects. I know where everything is, and it is my preference.

To me, getting out and putting away things that I regularly need makes no sense. It's like my bathroom - all the shampoo and body wash are away from the shower, why?! The people I live with cannot stand that I leave them by the shower.

    Have I digressed? Haha.

I really think it's preference, as is most things in life.
  • Tidy work space is a recipe to success, I agree.

Although I am not the tidiest person in the world, I still give high importance to tidiness.

    • I straighten mine up about every two or three days. Mine looks messy to others but is usually organized according to what I need it to be.

There is probably a point where cleaning up would be a delaying tactic for not getting to work, but I am definitely not there.
  • I can't stand a messy workspace. It makes me stressed and annoys me.

One thing I learned when I was still working for a database company was to take 5 minutes a day to clean and tidy up your space after work. After 2 weeks it became a habit and I saw that the more I did it, the less tedious (and stressful) working from my desk has become.

I tidy up my home office as soon as I'm done for the day, so it won't affect my work schedule. It's therapeutic for me and helps me get ready to work the ext day.

    • That's a wonderful habit to develop! That way you never feel like you're "wasting time" cleaning, but you always have a nice, tidy home office to look forward to in the morning. I bet that it really helps to keep you motivated and focused on your work! ^_^

    • Hmmm,

I seem to be the exception here.

At times my work space is cluttered with pens, sticky notes, writing tablets, phone book with all of my sites' log-ins and passwords, etc. strewn haphazardly around and sometimes it is as neat as a pin with the desk being so clean, I can see my reflection in it.

However, I have found that my work isn't hindered at all by either condition. When I'm writing and in the zone, nothing penetrates my mind's whirling as I type away creating content. As a matter of fact, several hours can whiz by in what seems just a fraction of "real time".

Perhaps when it comes to my writing, I have a one track mind?

  • I do my best work when I am at a coffee shop. I don't currently have a home office (newbie here!) but I find that having a cup of joe and the ambience of other people getting work done helps me get my work done.

When I'm at home, especially when other people are at home with me, I never get work done!
