Sales progress so far
Share on:
fb share twitter share gplus share more share

Ok. I started the whole mobile marketing thing on September 22nd so I'm about a month and a half into it. Here's what's happened so far.

1. Sold 5 mobile sites
2. Sold 2 full websites
3. Working on closing sale for another mobile site, full website and monthly SEO with two clients.
4. Joined two monthly networking groups and received some leads from them.
5. Received two leads from a customer I picked a check up from yesterday.
6. Found a great SEO company I can outsource to.

I will admit that I haven't been making nearly enough cold calls because I'm still working on getting my own marketing materials together. In fact, I don't even have my own website yet.

Once I have that set up, I can start aggressively doing some direct mail, classified ads (craigslist) and more cold calling. And knowing that I can now provide SEO by outsourcing it, I'll be able to add that to my services.

So for those of you who are waiting to get out there, don't. Time will pass you by whether you're sitting at your computer reading these forums, or hitting the streets making money. Believe me, it's a lot more fun making money.

Mike

Hi Mike,

Thats great -well done and thanks for posting your results to encourage others. It's good you have closed some full sites also, that's what is so great about mobile websites - they are a great 'foot in the door' product and then the opportunity to offer extra services is huge.

As you point out it's all about taking action and as you have found when you take it, you see results!

All the best,
Mark

Nice job Mike!

The best decision I made was to install a website blocker plug in that does not allow me to surf the Warrior Forum, Facebook and/or Twitter during the hours from9-5. Best business decision I've ever made.

I hit the streets last week after buying the mobile crusher program. I dropped off 5 fliers and got 2 appointments. I have one appointment today with a bar owner (already does SMS and it crushing it), but is interested in a mobile site and also said he needs a new desktop site. My 2nd appointment is on Friday with a restaurant owner that has ran 2 Groupon specials in the last 4-5 months so I know he needs help.

I hit the streets yesterday and handed out 15 fliers and spoke to 3 decision makers on the spot. One is interested in QR Codes and one may need a website down the line and is open to SMS.

Anyone reading this, yes, it is hard hitting the streets and talking to business owners, but they are generally open to how you can help.

Open up with, "I am not here to sell you on XYZ, I am here to build a relationship with you for the next 20 years."

Taking action feels good

Mike, great work man!! You just got out there right off the bat without worrying and got sales. I've been holed up in my room making websites, looking and playing with mobile site templates, reading how to pitch, researching SMS providers, worrying about objections, worrying if I'm offering a valuable service etc etc!

But I'm just about there, ready to unleash mobile marketing hell on my local towns

Me and my graphic designer brother are pushing a "design studio" business, so he's been holding me back abit with this probably more lucrative side venture.

Anyway, that to me sounds like a great month or so!

This plug-in sounds like something I could do with to keep tempations away! Though having said that I've been really productive today.

ADukes, it sounds good that you're just getting out there and taking some action. I never really thought about distributing fliers out, but sounds like a good idea. If you happen to run into the decision maker then all the better. You say it's difficult speaking to business owners, but for me personally speaking in person is way more easier than speaking over the phone. But that may just be me

Congrats Mike, you and I are on similar trajectories but you're definitely a few steps ahead of me. Are the appointments you've set up so far the result of cold calling? If so, would you mind sharing the pitch tactics that are proving successful for you?

I've actually been looking for something that would do this for a while now. Can I ask what program or plugin you use for this? I have 3 browsers installed so a browser plugin wouldn't work.

I only use Google Chrome so it is a browser plug-in. It's saved me so much wasted time of this site and others.

Mike, thanks for the progress report. It's inspiring.

I've been spending the last month getting my marketing materials/site together.

I plan to make some videos (using Jing) to show biz owners what their current website looks like on an iPhone.

Or, you could send a simple postcard to businesses asking them if they know what their website looks like on an iphone and include the URL to iphonetester.com

That, along with a stat or two about how fast the mobile market is growing (outpacing desktops) should let them convince themselves.

When possible, I like for them to sell themselves when possible. Just let them see how horrible their site looks on a mobile device.

But be sure to take the blame off of them:

"Hey, if your beautiful website doesn't look so good on a mobile device, don't worry, it's not your fault. (And it's not the fault of your web designer.) There's nothing really wrong with your website. It's doing exactly what you wanted it to do -- providing great info to people visiting your site on their computer.

"The problem is this mobile thing and how fast it has taken off has taken us all by surprise. And don't worry, you don't need to revamp or re-do your current site. All you need is a separate light-weight site designed for your mobile visitors.

"It's sorta like a restaurant that offers a 'kid's menu.' They don't offer scaled down versions of their spinach lasagna or baked salmon. They offer hamburger and fries and a coke and ice cream for the kids. That's what you need to do with your mobile site. Your visitors using mobile devices don't need to see everything on your website. They're just looking for some basic info. . . . blah blah blah"

Anyway, I've found that taking the "blame"off of them makes them relieved (and it doesn't sound as if you're criticizing their site.)

Anyway, I should be out within the week offering my local services to local businesses. (I'll be using a postcard mailing to warm them up.)

Jim

(By the way, Will R's mobile course is fantastic! Thanks, Will. Your course made me feel confident about building mobile sites.)

Great job Mike!
The best way to succeed is to get out there and fail a few times. I made up some flyers to send out to restaurants in my area and sent them out yesterday. Today, the sprinkler system in my front yard broke and water was everywhere. I called a landscape repair guy I found online and when he came out for the repair, I started chatting about his website. Turns out, he has 2 other businesses that need work on their websites and all three need mobile sites! You just never know when opportunity presents itself.

Bravo... ...Fight on!

Hey Jim, I really like this pitching idea!

I think if you got the mobile site design down to a fine art you could even change your template around colour wise and adding a company logo and uploading it to a subfolder on your website and you could show them that on the demo site also. This way they see THEIR site in a mobile friendly way in comparison to how it currently looks using the iPhone tester.

Of course this takes a bit of time, but like I say, if you get it down to a fine art changing the colours, adding a logo etc, it should only take 5-10 mins per company to make their demo, upload it and then send the e-mail, postcard etc.

JToneyUK, Yes, thanks! Great idea! You wouldn't even have to do a full-blown site as an example. Just show them the mobile-friendly home page.Definitely, it would be worth spending the extra time per client to make a demo. It would set you apart from the typical mass mailings they simply ignore.

I think the effort of spending 15 to 30 minutes customizing your marketing presentation for each carefully-chosen client who needs your services would be well worth it.

One nice thing about showing them a site you've made just for them is that people don't like things taken away from them. So the fact that you've already invested effort into making them a sample site is impressive but they also don't want to think that you're simply going to delete it if they choose not to keep it. (Plus, they may feel slightly obligated since you've already put so much work into it on their behalf.)

Then, the real key is to get them involved in customizing it. Stress that it's just a "draft" site and ask which other pages they think they'd need. What other colors might work better. Once they're engaged in the actual "design" of their own site, making simple decisions about color or where their logo should appear, then they feel "ownership." It's often best to let the customer participate in simple ways. (Too much participation can be overwhelming for them and can bog down the process. Just simple choices like "what do you think? yellow or green for these buttons?" are enough to make them feel a part of the design process.

The cake-mix people learned this in the 1950s. When they came out with cake mixes that "housewives" simply added water to, they didn't sell very well. But when they then required that the customer add a fresh egg (which wasn't necessary since the mix already had powdered eggs in them), they did very well. The women wanted to feel that they had actually contributed to the process so that they could take credit for baking the cake. Breaking and adding the fresh egg was the magic touch to make women feel they could legitimately accept compliments for it.

So if our clients help make a few simple decisions, they'll always feel proud of the fact that they actually "designed" their own mobile website.

Thanks for this tip. I just installed website blockers on Firefox (Leechblock) and Chrome (Website Blocker [Beta]). Can't find one for IE-yet.

My appointments came from two sources, actually. One was cold calling and the other was by looking out for opportunities.

Cold calling is obvious, but here's a couple of examples of looking out for opportunities.

1. We had a charity Halloween party a few weeks ago and I had to pick up a donation from a laser tag place nearby. Laser tag is one of those places where kids run around tyring to shoot each other with laser guns. Kinda like paintball without the mess. Anyway, while I was there I noticed a QR code on one of their marketing flyers which took me to their terrible looking website on my phone. Well, I talked to one of the owners and showed her how it looked.....then showed her what a mobile site looks like....yada yada yada....they hired me to design their mobile site.

2. I was having lunch with some family members and an old friend of theirs walked in. I sort of knew him but not much. After some chit chat I discovered that he owns a carpet cleaning business. I asked him about his website, pulled it up on my phone.....yada yada yada.....I just finished his mobile site and I'm trying to redesign his full site along with doing monthly SEO.

So basically, cold calling is a way to get clients. But always keep your eyes open and your ears clean cause you never know when an opportunity will fall into your lap.

Mike
