Share on:

Hey guys,
I've been searching the internet the last few days trying to find the mobile equivalent of a CMS like Wordpress.

I can't seem to find any, does anyone have any recommendations?

Nick

So on the entire web, Quentin's CMS and Ezmobilesitegenerator are the only CMS'?

What about off WarriorForum, isn't there some mainstream solution everyone is using?

Re: Mobile CMS like Wordpress?

I wonder about this place...

This is the problem with the idea of using a CMS to create websites. Everyone's got this idea that this is how you do it. No, a CMS should be just that, a Content Management System. Content, not site maker.

Someone who claims to have web development in his genes should know this.

You can make a mobile site with almost any CMS. Some will be a pain to work with getting a mobile layout, others will output a plain, unstyled HTML document if you want them to.

Pick a CMS that offers you flexibility, and allows you to separate design from content. Then you can make any kind of site you want with it.

If you even need a CMS, that is.

Is the site just several pages that don't need to be updated often? Straight HTML and CSS will be the best solution there. Fast, lean pages, without a lot of unnecessary bloated code.

Try firing up an editor and writing some code, for a change.

And to the people recommending buying a WSO? Why? How about learning some skills? Which, by the way, are free to learn in many different places all over the internet.

And lol at those links. "Stunning mobile sites with no skills!" I don't think so. Anybody who thinks they can copy-paste their way to riches is in for a rude awakening.

Re: Mobile CMS like Wordpress?

A CMS geared for mobile use could be quite useful. But CMS's are so much more nowadays than just content managers. They've developed into web platforms, and with a couple of plugins and a few(hundred) clicks you can build something that will satisfy many customers.

Couple that with the convenience of themes, and you have a system that can make you very productive when it comes to making sites.

The downside is that CMS's are heave and unresponsive, and adjusting a CMS + theme display things exactly like the client wants can sometimes be impossible.

In the end, if your going to build a lot of sites, it pays to learn how to do it by hand, even if you plan to outsource most of it.

Stacks,
This is not about writing code and being lazy. People join the forum to learn how to market and sell better.

If you want to work "IN" your business and write code for everyone, you can. But if you want to build great companies and sell as much as possible, you need systems in place and you need to reduce costs as much as possible.

You've obviously come to the forum for a reason, and if your going to diss people for supposedly having no skills, then you are going to learn nothing about marketing and selling.

While your busy writing code for your clients, I'll be busy trying to find the best ways to sell more and keep my customers happy.

Good luck!

If your comfortable with Wordpress then check out what a responsive theme is. I use several different ones and for instance the default twenty eleven is responsive. That's just an example but there are many. I like whiteboard and skeleton responsive (provides a way to use bbpress and has default info about mobile shopping cart). I've not used either function.

Responsive themes in HTML, Wordpress or whatever is something thats gaining a lot of traction especially if the businesses don't have websites or are redesigning their sites. The good responsive themes have portions of HTML5 built in.

Look, if you want to be all about selling, fine. But you, or anybody, need somebody on your team that actually knows how to create custom mobile solutions.

For example, you approach a restaurant, they look at your demo and say, "It's okay, but can you order from it? Can you check table availability and make reservations from it?" Or "We have those systems in place, can you integrate the mobile site with them?"

Or a hotel that wants to integrate their booking system into the mobile site.

What about a big client, that wants their database of thousands of records to be accessed from the mobile site?

Or a client with a desktop site with hundreds of pages, and wants to make it so that anyone following a link to a page on their site gets a mobile version of that page, and not simply redirected to the home page of the mobile site.

I could go on. Are you prepared to do those things?

Not trying to be mean, really, but you can choose to stay in the minor leagues, selling template sites to tiny businesses for peanuts, or you can step up and offer real, powerful mobile solutions to clients. And make far far more, as well.

These boring, copy-paste, template, do-nothing mobile sites are not going to be around for long. Businesses are going to be demanding far more from mobile. They already are. Our clients, for example, all seem to want a lot more than a click to call button and a map. And they should.

The bar is being raised quickly.

Of course I hire the talent to make custom solutions, it's not a question of skill.

In the end it's really who you want to target, large firms or single persons and small businesses. I target the smaller solutions because there more easy to automate and take less time per unit while still delivering quality.

It's up to you!

What about responsive designs? Would this help you in your situation?

There are quite a few responsive HTML5/CSS3 themes for Wordpress, including the default one that comes with Wordpress.

Thanks

Thanks for your reply,

What exactly is responsive mobile design?

From a selling point of view to clients, a tap to call feature, mobile seo, etc will be more valuable?

If i am not mistaken (and please correct if i am wrong) it means that your design looks great in multiple platforms and browsers, like iphone, ipad, android, IE7 etc.

It means the site will "look" good on multiple platforms but not necessarily function or validate well, main issue tends to be speed and since the content is not reformatted to offer the most compatible content, but instead resized or simply hidden.

There are couple of posts here on warrior forum about responsive design and mobile best practices, whilst its good in theory if you are going to take the extra effort to do this you should implement user agent based content instead so as to deliver the best user experience across the broadest range of phones by delivering device specific content. It will mean your sites will not only load faster but will if done correctly also validate correctly too.

Sorry, I am too busy helping people to think of a cool signature!

You can also use the free WPtouch plugin for Wordpress. It will give you a mobile theme, and you can insert your adsense code in the settings.

Take consistent action and analyze. Never give up!

In my opinion the WpTouch plugin is better served for blog style websites as opposed to business styled layouts...

I looked up Aegis Mobile CMS and contacted them about their pricing. This is what the sales guy said: "Our Pricing ranges from $25,000 to $500,000 dollars depending on content, features, and number of supported devices etc. We are also working on a self serve platform for more basic sites. "
25 - 500k? wow haha

Most websites can be converted to mobile-friendly websites simply by adding a mobile stylesheet. As a previous commenter noted above, that is typically true regardless of whether they are based on a CMS or not.

Having said that, one solution for bloggers or Wordpress-based sites is the PluginBuddy mobile plugin. You can find it here: Mobile : PluginBuddy | WordPress Plugins. It's similar to WP Touch and both have good reputations. I don't think PluginBuddy's mobile plugin is expensive and it comes with multiple mobile themes that will display a mobile blog on a variety of different mobile devices, not just tablets and cell phones, but also certain gaming devices.

Good luck!

It's not an end all solution but it can get your foot in the door but you have to pay 200 a year for the reseller program. Well worth it though. Overall though my most satisfied clients are WP buyers.

We use Wordpress as a full Mobile Content Management system but it will depend on what you want it for.

we use it for memberships and magazines where we need a lot off pages and posts.

So for example all of the above would not be able to do this efficiently.

Here is an example of a full mobile content management system.
