Can I add the redirect script through ftp?

If I have a clients ftp login details, can I add the redirect script myself by copying the standard websites folder to my computer then add the redirect script to the web pages then upload the updated version back to their server?

Yes, I just did this recently. You don't need to move the whole folder to your computer though, just the pages you will be putting the code on.

You can even just edit the files straight through the FTP program in most cases. If you are going to be editing their files though it is always a good idea to download a copy of those files just incase you were to make any mistakes. That way you could easily get things back to how they were if needed.

That is a VERY good and IMPORTANT point!
I create a folder (you can name it anything...clientfiles, etc.) then within that folder I create another folder called "original". Put the clients original files in the "original" folder, then copy, or download the same files and put them in the "clientfiles" folder. You can edit away, and if you see a mistake, just install the original back in, then go back to editing the "working" file.

I can't stress enough the importance of Will's point!!
