The use of Augmented Reality technology is gaining popularity. There are several open sources for developing new layers (channels) for AR browsers (like Layar and Junaio). You can easily create the layers by categories (shopping, diners etc.) for local market. In description of POI (point of interes) you may add a 'tap-to-call', site URL and map of biz.

Augmented Reality is really a cool feature and it is true that many business never know that such a feature exist. It is more essential in Tourism industry where one needs information while in a complete new environment. I too look for more info on this exciting technological development here.

I think AR is going to be a lot like 3D - always around but never much used or cared about by the general consumer.

Films, TVs and phones with 3D have never taken off. After the Wow Factor comes the What For? factor. And this isn't a good answer to that.
