This is a perplexing topic. For businesses that have a website already, should I host the mobile site on my server ? Or as a subdirectory on their server ? What about the possibility of a hostile previous webmaster, or should I be asking for all log in credentials so I insert the redirect script myself ? What about A records ? are A records only modified /added if the subdomain is on another IP address ? |

I have always hosted my clients mobile websites on the subdomain of their current website. I work with most of these people on an ongoing basis so I was not going to charge them for hosting I knew they did not need. Others are known to charge people a small monthly fee and that's fine. In that instance you will want to host the site on your domain and maybe use s cname record OR just purchase a cheap .mobi domain for your customer and host the site their. |

I'm with Will on this one. If they already have hosting it just makes sense to use the m.theirdomain.com subdomain to host. Makes you look good too for not trying to charge them more than they really need.

Like rontheitguy and WillR, I agree with using a subdomain like m.yourdomain.com See relevant info I posted in another thread about .mobi and other choices for mobile marketing here. You just need to have access to the client's hosting account and a proper redirect script in place. |

for your script update convenience, you can ask client point a A record to your own hosting. you put script on one www folder, and use domain to identify client. then you only update one copy of script even you have 1000 clients

Yes I agree on the subdomain as you are looking after your client...also with the redirect script on their main site it will switch to the mobile site if it's detected by a mobile device so a big plus for the client than having a main site and then a different domain for the mobile site.

Ditto on the comments like WillR, it will show the client you care about their bottom line when every dollar is critical to their success. --Dennis
