How to link to link members database to mobile site
Share on:
fb share twitter share gplus share more share

Here's the scenario:

I have a client who has a large client database membership site. They want to have a mobile site built, no problem

Here's where I need your help...

They also want a login page for the mobile site... no problem, I'm using Wordpress as the platform by the way.

They also want that their members can use the same login details they already have for the desktop site.

Is that technically possible/ And if so how?

I know how to create a mobile membership site in Wordpress, but I'm stuck on how o link it to their standard website database.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Stewart

You will likely want to pay a developer to do this one for you. You can retain the function of the site but you will need to build the front end to interface kindly with WP.

I think that is not good idea to use WP mobile plugin, buy the way, you can try to find some plugin to organize mobile version of website inside wordpress engine or better way- is to use oauth for main website and for it's mobile version.

You will need someone who is fluent in programming to take all the information from their current database and import it into your mobile site. Then they need to connect the two databases together somehow so that new members who sign up are added to both databases.

Maybe a better and easier solution for a site like that is to keep the standard website but make it responsive so that it automatically stretches and shrinks to fit the device viewing it. It's probably a more sensible solution for a site like that.

I was thinking along those lines too Will.

I'll need to do some more client expectation management on this one.

Their original request was for a mobile site with login and logout features, now that I've built the mock-up, they're asking why their clients should have to have two logins. There was no talk of linking the databases (I asked about this).

They seem to have the impression that the mobile and standard site are two of the same... build the mobile site and the content from the standard one automatically appears.

This would definitely require some programming as mentioned above. A responsive theme wouldn't cut it as there is just too much going on on their site. This is a first, I've only ever taken on standard mobile site clients before.

I'll have to seek out a good programmer and get this priced up.

Thanks guys

Yeah Stewart, the more you say the more I think you should try and find a nice responsive HTML5 theme as that will then work on desktops, tablets, and mobiles. It would be much easier than having to export and import users and sync two different sites up with one another. If they have a site they already like, you could possible get a coder to recode it in responsive HTML5.
