google already has been differentiating mobile sites for years - take a look at the google mobile portal for non smartphones ie google.com/m

a mobile site that would properly validate would get a green handset icon next to its listing

currently in the google search portal for mobile devices, mobile sites are also differentiated from as well, any site or content which is deemed mobile will have the mobile serp link directed directly to the mobile content as opposed to the desktop listing, in order to speed up the access of the mobile content on users mobile devices.

however placement and ranking it seems is yet to be determined other than implementing and following what google considers best practices for moble website developement - its going to be an interesting 18 months

Sorry, I am too busy helping people to think of a cool signature!

Hey Charles
Search engines like Google and Bing are already differentiates between mobile websites and other sites.
Since large number of people are using smart phone devices and prefers to make searches from those devices while on the move or even at home, a large number of businesses are having their websites over mobile platforms. That's why doing SEO for your mobile websites is the necessity of current time, for being on top of your competitors in search results.

As already mentioned sites like Google and Bing are already differentiates between mobile websites and other sites but here are some reasons this is important for mobile consultants.

1. In 2011, there were 835 million smartphone users, 5.6 billion feature phone users.
2. 64% of mobile phone time is spent on apps, 13.4% texting, 11.1% browser, 5.5% social networking apps, 5.4% dialer, 5.3% email/IM, 2.3% music/video, 1.1% camera, 55.8% other apps.
3. On average, it takes 90 minutes to respond to an email, but 90 seconds to respond to a text message.
4. 61% of customers who visit a mobile unfriendly site are likely to go to a competitor’s site.
5. 61% of smartphone users make local searches from their device.
6. 20% of telecom, 30% of restaurant, and 25% of movie searches are mobile.

I could go on and on but you get the point… If you’re looking for resources the best thing ii can tell you is to do a search on Google or Bing… you will find all sort of valuable information.

It will be critical for businesses to adapt to the new changes we are seeing with Google search and Google + Local. With the rates of mobile search queries rising faster then ever businesses are still dragging their feet when it comes to adopting a solid mobile strategy. Try scanning those QR's in the magazine and spam snail mail you get. You will be shocked at how many people still point QR's to "un-mobilzed" content. Even large companies/corporations are paying agencies in some cases tens of thousands of dollars to create broken mobile marketing campaigns.

If there is one thing that is sure, it's that Google will be changing how they see everything as time goes on. Of course Yahoo and Bing also evaluate how things are found on certain devices you just don't hear about that as much since Google is a monster.
