Let's add my very favorite Bo Didley song....From 1960, a very progressive song for that time...One of the great, unique and totally under-rated pre-Hendirx guitar jams. "What you say man? Quit mumblin' and talk out loud!" |

Australian band from the Sixties "The Easybeats" - produced by Vanda & Young who went on to produce "AC/DC" - another Aussie band. This is "Friday on my Mind" - which was covered by David Bowie - |

Friday On My Mind was covered by too many bands to name. Vanda and Young also put out a couple of albums under the name Flash and The Pan. This is the song I'm most familiar with:

Want more trivia? "Friday on my Mind" was #1 in Australia in 1966, #6 in United Kingdom, Top 10 in France, Germany, Italy and The Netherlands and Top 20 in United States in 1967. The lead singer of The Easybeats, Stevie Wright, went on to destroy his career and life with a heroin addiction. But, remarkably - he's still alive and performed a gig at Byron Bay last year. What else? Vanda and Young were in the Easybeats. I pursued Stevie Wright's ex for awhile. Oh...and Mark Opitz gave me the lowdown on what really happened to the INXS lead singer Mick Hutchence. :p

"You wanna play that game huh." Actually, I love playing that game. I can't speak for Steven, but I think he does too! He and I spent several days a while back stumping each other with trivia. It's all good fun. |

oohhh trivia! OK, I'll start: (and no googling - honor system applies): What British rocker was Bowie's primary inspiration for the Ziggy Stardust character? (Hint: this artist is most famous for writing and recording a song later covered by the Clash) |

OK Jon... How about a little Colorado music trivia? 1 Zephyr had Tommy Bolin on guitar and Candy Givens as lead singer. What was the name of Zephyr's "alter ego" band? In other words what other name did they use when performing? 2 Where exactly did Joe Walsh record "Rocky Mountain Way"? |

OK, then... AG knew the answer to my trivia question - "What British rocker was Bowie's inspiration for Ziggy Stardust?' Here he is in all his rockabilly cat glory:: And the song he wrote and recorded, and was later covered by the Clash? here 'tis: |

#2 Nederland's close, but the exact location is Caribou...A couple of miles up the hill from Nederland. That was a pretty well-known recording studio in Caribou in the early 70's. I'm in Estes and the drive from Estes to Nederland is one of the prettiest hour drives you'll ever see, even by Colorado standards. Have you ever made the drive on Peak to Peak Highway?

Not sure if this counts as obscure, overlooked or forgotten. I happened to read in the news that Joe Walsh was granted a restraining order against an elderly wacko and some memories rose up. Some of his stuff I learned to hate because of radio overexposure, like "Rocky Mountain High". Others I learned to like because of bar bands doing excellent covers. This is one of them, from his James Gang days. |

WARNING: Not for the easily offended, and definitely not one for the play list at auntie Jessica's funeral, this no BS, straight to the point Jarvis Cocker song should be played every time that BP guy spouts more garbage on TV, or whenever a politician is caught with his manicured hands in the till, etc. |

I remember first hearing The United States of America in the 80s. Their eponymously-titled, and one and only, album is like a distillation of the psychedelic era. And Hard Coming Love is my favourite of their songs. Pure gold. |

No offense meant and none taken. As it is, I said basically the same thing you did earlier in this thread (though we do have different parameters). Iv'e seen many things posted here that I had to ask "How can you call that obscure, it was a Top 40 hit where I live" but turns out it didn't even break the top 100 where the OP lived when it came out. To each his own, and let us all keep posting! |

bands in the 45 plus years I've had a radio glued to my ear than most people on this planet. And it would be real easy and snobby of me to say to somebody "What? You never heard of...<fill in the blank>?" But I don't do that because I came to realize a long time ago that everybody has a completely different musical experience. I grew up in a classical home that exposed me to everything from piano concertos to opera. Add to that mix the friends I had growing up who were into everything from The Beatles to 13th Floor Elevators to...well you get the idea. If you lined up, end to end, every song, group and whatnot that I've heard since 1964 when I first started getting into pop music, you could probably go to the moon and back 10 times over. I've probably forgotten more groups than most people have ever heard of. Most of them you won't even find on YouTube. (Go on, try to find the Chesapeak Jukebox Band) So I make do with what I call the "2nd tier of obscurity" These are songs that didn't make top 40 radio. These are songs that maybe got played for a week on some popular FM station and then never got played again. A perfect group that comes to mind is the Strawbs. Sure, I guess they were pretty big in England and maybe even still get played from time to time. But here in the states, after that wonderful spring of 1973 when we here were first graced with Bursting At The Seams, that was pretty much the end of them with a few exceptions. I kept up with the group personally because I loved their music, even though they had maybe 3 songs that got played on the radio between 1973 and 1978. Obscure? Maybe not by your definition. But to a generation that longed for something better than Nushbush City Limits and the crap that was played on top 40 radio at the time, the Strawbs were a godsend and something I wish I could maybe still hear if I turn on my radio today. Sadly, I know that's never going to happen...along with groups like: Renaissance Starcastle King Crimson Gentle Giant The Move And the list goes on and on. Obscure? Well, kind of depends on your definition. Missed? To many of us...greatly. And as far as I'm concerned, that beats any definition of obscure that anybody can come up with. And with that...I leave you with one of the Move's greatest songs. God I miss hearing this.

See, I wouldn't consider any of these groups obscure: Renaissance Starcastle King Crimson Gentle Giant The Move. Well, of that list I would say Starcastle was the least known band to me. But it was a wonderful Video arcade game, which I use to own: Star Castle - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia But here is Steven's: |

stuff regularly (city and state) and I'll move there. Here in NY? Forget it. ** EDIT ** And as I said, these groups are what I call 2nd tier obscurity. If you'd like a list of crap that nobody but people with no life have heard of, I'll be happy to compile it.

This is currently the best live band on the planet. Jaw droppingly great, with precision a prog rock band would kill for. Even if you don't like punk, do yourself a favor and see this band if they come nearby. You'll be blown to pieces, I guarantee. |

Well, I don't know what's obscure anymore but here's one from October of 1972 by Keith Hampshire that I literally haven't heard since November of that year when I heard it for the 3rd and last time. But heck, what do I know? The Song - "Daytime Nighttime" ** EDITORS NOTE ** In the US, the song was issued in some places with the 45 label reading "Daytime Nighttime Sufferings" I don't know if this was a misprint, the real name of the song or what. And I never bothered to research it since the song went off the charts after about 4 weeks. |

these groups on WNEW 102.7 where I am. But unlike the "popular" stuff that, after it came out, you keep hearing 20, 30 years later, this stuff is GONE. You will never hear some of these songs on the radio again as long as you live. And it's not an age thing either. Roundabout by Yes will be played forever, as will All Good People. They're rock classics. But Renaissance? The last time I heard a renaissance song was in 1982. If you want to say that anything that was ever played on the radio is not obscure, then guess what...most of this thread goes in the trash. That's not my definition. But I guess everybody has their own definition of obscure rock.

My problem is many of the obscure songs I like are too obscure to be on Youtube. Brownie Mcghee's "When the Wind Blows" is one of my faves of all time, can't find it anywhere. Just one of a 1000 examples. |

Sounds like your just in one of those moods tonight Steven. We have already agreed that not everyone has the same definition of obscure. But you are wrong. The "classic rock" station in my area almost NEVER plays these songs" "Roundabout by Yes will be played forever, as will All Good People. They're rock classics." And if you read the article on the station I mentioned, it explained that it was basically the only DC station where you didn't get the crap all the other stations were playing and you actually got exposed to new and different types of music. |

While there's nothing obscure about the Beach Boys, most people are unfamiliar with the lead singer of one of their most affecting tunes. Here's Sail On, Sailor, featuring Blondie Chaplin up front... |

Okay, this should certainly qualify. The artist is an up and comer by the name of Alyson Greenfield. My daughter happens to be personal friends with her, so if she ever makes it, she can brag that she knows her. The Song - "Good Looks" |

Wow! I just checked again, and someone put it up earlier this year... This is a great song. Brownie Mcghee is a legend. He and Sonny Terry started recording in the 1920s. This song was recorded in the 80s, right after they broke up. I love this song because: 1. It's a great song 2. It's a modern recording, with a modern back-up band, of a real legend. You won't hear Brownie with a band very much, let alone without Sonny Terry. 3. Brownie was in his 70's when he sings this, and sounds great. 4. It's really upbeat. A lot of blues was meant to chase the blues away.
