I'm staying home but my family is headed for Colorado for Christmas and hoping flights are running smoothly.

When I used to fly frequently I always hoped if I got stuck for hours it would be in a large airport with good food. Check out the food in Charlotte and plan a party while you're there?

Yeah, I plan on buying a nice holiday meal for the "crew" so things could be much worse. I just imagine what the people in Kentucky are going through and it makes me count my blessings and realize it's not that bad of a situation

Just saw a relevant comment on a friend's FB....

"This is not the year to get everything you want - this is the year to appreciate everything you have."

Bright side - you will share those layover hours with the most important people in your life...lot to be said for that.

Quick ?.... I am severely on the fence with a decision to go to a family gathering and need some advice/perspective! My wife and I just recovered from Covid 1 week ago today our quarantine ended after Breakthrough Covid. However, with Omicron ramping up big time, should my wife and I go to a family Xmas Baby SHower party 3 hrs away for my 5 mos pregnant niece? If we don't go, its our only opp to see that side of family during the Holidays! Also... niece just had some heart valve complications 2 weeks ago but appears fine now! I just don't know and the party is tomorrow!! Thanks for any feedback.

Well I do not mean to rain on your parade, but if it was me I would probably skip it. Just getting over Covid and this new Variant out...well I would play it safe. And no need to jeopardize that young pregnant mother to be

      But that is just me

The Omicron scare may be just that - a scare. As of yesterday in the news only ONE US death from Omicron - and that was an unvaccinated male with healthy issues. That may change but the illness:death ratio is not the same are previous variants.

That said, if I were your pregnant niece ....I would not be going to a 'baby shower'. I know people want to follow the standard traditions but I don't think the risk to a pregnant woman is worth a few gifts.

But then, I probably wouldn't drive 3 hrs to a shower in the first place, so what do I know?

      I wouldn't go.

I agree about only one death from Omicron being telling.

But we have to remember that two weeks ago, almost nobody in the US had it.

And hospitalizations lag behind infections by a week or so...and deaths lag behind hospitalizations by another couple of weeks.

But based on international information, it's far less deadly than the other variants.

But it sure is easier to spread. And for that reason alone, I wouldn't go.

Yesterday, my wife was invited to her grandson's wife's wedding shower. It happens in 2 months, and is an 8 hour drive.

My wife is 74 years old, and nobody there will be wearing a mask. And nobody in the car will be wearing a mask. I'm doing everything I can to talk her out of going.

I went to a funeral last month - it was a much loved family member and I would have attended no matter what the risk to support her husband and daughter.

I skipped a 'destination' wedding - but then I always skip those anyway. I've skipped one baby shower and two wedding showers - but I did send nice gifts.

I think you have to make choices based on your own assessment of the risk and your own needs....blah blah blah.....and that sounds so logical and realistic, doesn't it?

Truth is - covid has given me a perfect excuse to avoid many of the 'social obligations' I NEVER enjoyed.... and gain a reputation as 'cautious' rather than 'anti social'.... Works for me.
