New Apple TV 4k, Brilliant, But What A Bummer

Glowing reviews and it has 128 gigs memory as opposed to my Shield which has 16. All for $150.00

Only one drawback which kills it for me. They don't allow Kodi on the Apple App store. So tight are they on any Apps that they don't like. Because, you can add any app of your choice within Kodi.

No sign on any updated Shield on the horizon either. Last one was 2019, still selling it.

Any recommendations for newer, faster streaming Android boxes.

    No, but l have heard Apple is limiting their new Virtual Goggles since their mini LED display goes way past anything on the market, (explains the 5k price tag) and they have had issues with them so are slowly down production, even though they know they probably won't see a profit for a year.

    I believe that a resolution going past 8k is projected onto the googles which creates a virtual experience over the real world.

    Zapitti and Dune HD make higher end media streamers. You're in for sticker shock, though, if $150 seems pricey to you. I think the Dune runs $799.

    The Zidoo Z9X is another new option. Only 16gb storage but you can easily connect an external drive. It runs about $350 but appears to be sold out at the moment. I'm told it's picture quality rivals the Shield for streamed media and torches the Shield for local media.

      Prahblem I gaht most times with yogahin' out to sum dumb show is how I always inadvertently back up my ass into no presentah's mouth while I dinksyin' out all exotic.

      Less'n it is a naytyoore show, course, an' my preference here would always be for flippy flappy butterflies ovah fleshbitey sharks.

      Bcs you see them stories.

      Where rats an' snakes an' WOIST nip atchya flesh while you jus' peein'.

      bcs they jumped straight outta the pipe into yr immediate snatch areah.

      So I figure, yeah -- summon unto my TV screen the vilest horrors of movie gore imaginibyoolshshsh ...

      mebbe I can kiss 'em into submission with muhlipse.

      I do naht believe my response here is in any way technical, only it kinda is.

      Meantime, 2 TVs walk into a bar.

      Yes, been looking at tons of these cheap boxes on Amazon. They are mostly, apparently old and flimsy and overheat, but been maxed out. I see the Dune has a 499.00 pro option but only has 32 gigs. It is apparently unlikely that anymore Nvidia's will be made.

      Added. I have one App on Kodi I use a lot to view movies. Trouble is, on the Shield, it takes up more and more room, hogging the storage (and I'm just streaming) and absolutely no way of clearing it too. Weird, so every several months I have to delete Kodi and start again.

        How many apps are you running that you need so much storage space? Honest question; no judgment. I've just never ran into storage issues, and I am early adopter who had one of the original Rokus. Even then, no issues with storage.

          I have an assortment of third party movie apps. Somehow it seems to amass storage space over time and nothing in Kodi or Nvidia you can do can flush it out. I suppose the only answer is to add on an SD card with a large capacity so it will take a long time before you need a reset. The same thing happens on the Fire TV platform. I suppose it's because they are non approved. Roku are very strict about what it allows on.

    I discovered a solution to Kodi hogging up all the storage on the Shield. Apparently it saves all the thumbnails and pictures that comes up when you look at media that has them come up on the page.

    Over time, this builds up, so previously I have done fresh installs of Kodi and apps. The only way I thought could clear it.

    But finally, I read that under settings, in the files and folders bit, you can access the thumbnails folder, in which were in multipule folders. It took a few minutes, opening each folder in turn, selecting all and pressing delete from the menu you get when doing a hard press on one of them (select all and delete using this method)

    I, had amassed over 5 gigs worth over time and the Shield was telling me it was running out of space. When I had deleted them all, it only took up one gig.

    Worth knowing if you ever use Kodi.

      Kodi, at it's best, goes out and finds movies and media online and streams them without ad's or popups, or the need to visit websites, There are official app's and unofficial ones. So the latter would be the best to look for. Many are free but some ask for a small fee. If you run an android box or streaming device connected to your tv you can download Kodi from the app store. A bit dodgy, so always run a VPN on your device for privacy.

    Any thoughts on a Samsung 54 cu700d 43'Class 4K UHD LED LCD TV
    60 Hz Refresh Rate, Crystal Processor 4K, with Stand, Smart TV w/apps?

    Costco has them in stock for $279.99 at the warehouse. I don't need anything fancy and definitely not into all the latest tech when it comes to TV. I have a used TV in my house that is approximately 20 years old.

      Not a bad tv. It's going to be a smart, internet tv anyway as you say. A 50" version of that can be found on Amazon for $379.00 Not a huge amount more for an extra 7" in screen size.

        I concur with Mark. Not a bad TV, but I think you can do better for the money. Go to Best Buy and check out a few TCL options. They have surprisingly good picture quality for the money. For you and your requirements, the Series 4 versions are probably sufficient. Series 5 gets a little pricier but the jump in quality probably isn't worth it. Their Series 6 tvs, however, are worth the bump in cost (if you're so inclined).

          He mentioned that his tv was 20 years old, imagine, huge bezels and a screen without backlighting. Anything's going to be significantly brighter and just about all tv's are 4k these days. The really dirt cheap ones are probably edge lit so best to avoid them. I gave a really cheap 55" edge lit one to my friend (Insignia) and when I go round there I can't believe how dim it is compared to what mine are like.

          Whatever Mr DWolfe buys is going to be much better than something 20 years old and pretty much always smart with net connection. Just avoid edge lit.

      Well you put up with the same tv for 20 years, your needs and expectations are not like Dan's or mine. I think you would be thrilled with pretty much anything as it would be far ahead of what you knew and were used to.

      As to Amazon Cubes and plugin sticks etc. Really, they are only for people who want to load misc apps on them. A smart tv is going to have most of the principal ones already installed, Like You Tube, Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime TV etc. You just insert your password and login on the pay ones. YT is of course free. If you get into it you could still purchase a cheap streaming stick and change your input to that. Though, Amazon are blocking any rouge, unapproved apps on their latest devices, Roku and of course Apple are restrictave like that too. So, a generic Android stick would be the order of the day. It would get around any tv restrictions.

        There are benefits to using an external source over a smart TV's apps. Smart tvs are notorious for being slow to update apps, if they do at all, and are known for removing apps from their platform without notice. Adding new apps can be difficult or impossible.

          Hey DWolf, Just did a quick trip to Walmart on the way home from a friends place and spotted a pile of Hisense TV's which had the ROKU O/S on them for $299.99, thing is, they were 55". Pays to shop around, best deal yet. But did not have time to glean the specs, but That Hisense series 6 tv I gave you (for the same price) the link too, although 50", was a good deal from Amazon, spec wise.

          Correction, it was actually a 58" tv (if you want to go that big) and is being sold on Walmart's website for $278.00

            I don't have a great deal of experience with Hisense but, from what I've read, they seem to be on par with TCL. This has full array local dimming and uses the Roku platform. Appears to be a pretty good deal for $278.

            I, personally, wouldn't put it in a living room but would consider it for a guest bedroom. However, if you aren't an afflicted audiovisualphile (I wouldn't wish this curse on anyone...), it's likely a great option.

    I just got back from Costco a 50-inch Hisense 4k UHD LED LCD is $259.99, and a Roku 55-inch 4k UHD LCD is $299.99 They have a whole boatload of bigger TVs in the $360 range but they are way too big for my needs. I do not know whether a Hisense or a Roku is a better brand.

      Roku, like Andriod is just an operating system (not a tv brand) that goes on the tv. The make and specs of the TV is what's important, so it should say, Hisense, or TCL tv with Roku for example. It's rather like buying a PC, and it saying what operating system is on it, which version of Windows. The hardware of the PC is what people look at first. Has it got a fast processor, lots of storage and Ram etc.

      If you are restricted for space and cost then just go for the 50" at 259.00. It will be infinitely better than your 20 year old dinosaur and I'm sure you will be very pleased with it.

      Sounds like a great deal, but the wait for the free TV might be a downside. The options at Costco seem more immediate and budget-friendly.
