Wow, hard to believe College football is already starting this month. Boy, that was fast !!

Opening day on the 26th features some matchups between middle of the pack teams with the exception of Notre Dame who plays Navy in a Dublin, Ireland showdown.

So who and what are we highlighting this year :

Dan - Ohio State came damn close ( a field goal) to beating Georgia and playing in the championship game last year. The buckeyes are preseason pick to be number 1 by ESPN. The QB position is the big question mark for OSU . But it shall be a very entertaining season to watch them. Go Buckeyes Go !!!

Mark - The Florida State Seminoles are coming off a strong 10 game win season last year. They are pre season picked to be 13th by ESPN. They have key starters at
QB, receiver, and running back returning. Should be a strong year for Mark and his 'Noles !!

Don - Although Don's Rutgers Scarlett Knights are not ranked in the ESPN pre season poll, they are always a formidably foe for big 10 teams like OSU and Michigan. Look for them to be really tough at home and give the Buckeyes a decent game with their pesky play on Nov. 4th !! A day to mark on your calendars.

Robert - My Tennessee Vols have a chance to win it all. And I know I am being biased but I think Joe Milton will have a huge break out year and lead us to an 11-1 record and into the Championship game. ( oh well, a guy can dream can't he )
Only time will tell.

Anyway, best of luck to you guys above. And anyone else here in the OT Forum that has a fav college football team, feel free to post it right here in the 2023- 2024 College Football Thread

Obviously the Noles will turn down the Vol's so fast that they will no longer be heard, let alone seen. See how already, your mascot looks resigned to complete failure and humiliation. https://rockytopgifts.com/blogs/blog...u-want-to-know

Yep, QB is the big question mark for the Bucks. Having the best WR room in the country will help sort that out, though. We'll find out real quickly what we're looking at with the Notre Dame game.

Schiano better get them to a bowl game or his head will end up on the chopping block probably. Just got back from the local Costco they have a limited supply of Rutgers Thermoses in stock. I was surprised to see them selling them.

I did not realize the season starts today. I have seen heavy advertisements to watch the Penn State vs. West Virgina as the game of the week on Television on Sept. 2. Rutgers starts on the 3rd for a Sunday game at 12 noon vs. Northwestern at home.

  • I think I may have a brain aneurysm before Sunday.

IF the Noles hype is real, we may have something really special this year. If it's not, hopefully they'll build and then next year may be it.

    Mark

PS We've been living on the hope of next year since the 2013 team dominated. That's 10 freaking years.

Not perfect by any means, especially much of the first half, but I will take it. We needed that kind of statement win. I'm rooting for LSU the rest of the year hoping they excel proving that this was a real beatdown and not just a fluke.

Now the Noles have to deal with something they haven't had to deal with in a long time - pats on the back. Don't let that crap go to your heads boys! Don't believe the hype - just do this same thing every week and you can then enjoy it at the end of the season.

Who is your top 5 currently and who is in the playoffs?

    1. Georgia
    2. Florida State
    3. Michigan
    4. Alabama
    5. Ohio State

    CFP: Georgia, FSU, Michigan, Alabama

I don't have a full opinion yet, but I'll tell you one thing: if you're right, it means OSU likely lost to Michigan three years straight and Ryan Day is out of a job.

Rutgers beat Temple 36-7 for a 2-0 start. This Saturday coming up they face Virginia Tech. After V.T. was upset on Saturday, hope the Scarlet Knights don't end up as a punching bag.

Later on November 4th, we play Dans' team at home.

The Buckeyes start the year 2-0 with solid defensive performances in both games and average offensive performances. They drop from 3 to 6.

This is one of the few things I dislike about today's college football. A team gets penalized for not running up the score against lesser opponents. It's consider weak to only beat a team by 28 points.

While the Buckeyes offense is certainly not running on all cylinders, I'm fairly confident they are running a vanilla offense in order to not show anything to Notre Dame. I guess we'll find out on 9/23.

I think the Pollsters take OSU for granted to be quite frank. But it really does not matter (as you say) because if they win 9/23 they will be in the top 4 , imho

  • As far as running up the score for the polls, I agree. It's easy for some power to put 55 on Podunk College. The games won by a few points, though, are generally the best games. High scoring is fun to watch but two teams slogging it out in the trenches for a 5 point advantage is "real" football. The problem is that when a power beats Podunk by 5, that means Podunk is as good as the power for that particular Saturday. So, what to do with that? Encourage running up the score whenever and however you can!

It's early and there will still be a lot of movement in the polls.

BIG day today for college football!!!

Mark's Noles face a test on the road against BC. I do not think they will slip up and take it handily!!

Dan's Buckeyes have an easy one against western Kentucky. . Should be a tune up for next weeks big game vs Notre Dame.

Don and his Scarlet Knights have a tough one against VTech. Rooting for you guys, Don!!

My Vols take on a tough Florida Gators in prime time. Iam predicting my Vols win going away and Joe Milton has a break out game!!

  • A win is a win but DANG!! 31-29 FSU. We do that next week, we'll have our tail handed to us by Clemson. Our defense made NO adjustments to contain the BC QB and so he ran up and down the field like he was playing an elementary school team! I think there was too much looking ahead to next week, and not enough focusing on what needed to happen today.

That was a big win yesterday, another high-scoring day. I did not know about it because I was away all day. They are on the road next week to Michigan. Hopefully, they play a decent game and frustrate the Wolverines.

I did watch most of the last quarter of the Pitt vs. West Virginia game last night. They call it the Backyard Brawl. Interesting fact it was the first game W.V. had won since 2011. good luck to everyone's team next week!

Neon has the football world watching, and it is hard to imagine that ND has only played The Ohio State University four times in the last 80 years. Some good games this weekend, got to find me some Lawson's chip dip soon (if you know, you know).

A different perspective. I enjoyed watching Norte Dane vs. Ohio State. Even though I want Dan's team to win. I had no dog in the fight. I watched the majority of the 2nd half right to the end. Besides watching both teams battle back and forth. It was wild to see how often the broadcasters kept saying " This will probably be the last play." The Shock on ND Fans' faces when OSU scored with a second remaining--the review of the touchdown, the excitement of OSU players the dejection of ND players. Then you still had a second on the clock to have to kick off one more time to ND.

I bet over 95% of N.D. fans were stunned and annoyed the rest of the night, and still talking about it today. The ending is what makes college football so interesting. Anything can change at any time.

Congratulations to you guys on winning your games over the weekend. Rutgers ran into a brick wall and lost. Nothing surprising in that outcome.

Speaking of Duke they decided to punt instead of go for a field gold in the final minutes. That ended up costing them the game. They were winning at that point, a few penalties and a few missed tackles made a difference. Notre Dame was very lucky to pull that win off.

RU lost to Wisconsin yesterday, next week is Michigan State. I hope the Scarlet Knights become a spoiler-maker against one of the bigger teams.

ABC had Notre Dame playing Louisville game last night. The Cardinals beat ND 33-20. Most of the scoring was in the 4th quarter. I turned the game on with about 7 minutes left on the clock. The loss basically knocked the Fighting Irish out of the playoffs! Louisville's defense shut down ND's offense causing, QB Sam Hartman to get sacked four times with three interceptions and two fumbles.

Just raw talent and skill. Of course I will win whatever you you are talking about. I have always been a Tiddlywinks superstar.

So, your back from your Walt tour. Did they have his frozen body on display on the ship? How was it this time around? Any new characters to get photographed with? No casino, must have been awful, lol.

Went to see The Creator movie last night. late night showing. A well received new Sifi movie. I only slept through about a third of it. Visually, it looked good, the acting was good but I was unable to fully engage with it all and be stunned or wowed like some movies, if you know what I mean.

Robert, I've been out of it much of the weekend but the Vols took care of business too, right? Showed Bimbo Fisher the door, right? I hold few grudges in life and have a goal to have none. But I still have a hard time dealing with how Jimbo did us. He quit recruiting, building the team, or doing anything to move forward while he was secretly looking for another job. That neglect had effects that were a direct cause of our recent way down years. Tomorrow is what college football is all about. Some great games !!

We have Dan's Buckeyes hosting a top ten Penn.State Nittany Lions. And later Mark's Noles face a very tough Duke Blue Devils team.

And don't forget my Vols take on Bama at Tuscaloosa , which should be a tough game for us to win.

Lastly, Don's Scarlett Knights look to improve to 5-2 as they face IU in Bloomington.

Good luck to everyone and enjoy

Rutgers is now Bowl-eligible first time in 9 years! The next game is at home on November 4. vs. Ohio State! If they can keep the game within 15 points of Dan's team it will be a good day!

I watched part of the Florida St vs Duke game on ABC last night. Good game but once Florida St got a 10-point lead, it was time to head to bed. You could see the momentum changed in their favor. Dukes' Defense was starting to be worn down.

  • Some of the powers, like Georgia, seem to be struggling a little. They are pulling out the win at the last minute or they only play one-quarter of football or similar. Perfect records in some cases, but nowhere near perfect on the field.

Every team, on any given Saturday, can lose to anyone or play bad football. But every week?

Some surprises with the ACC teams being almost undefeated. Duke, DUKE, Miami, etc. I remember when Duke was the laughingstock of the conference, and it was like you didn't even need to prepare for them. Besides, they are more into basketball. But this year, they are holding their own with everyone to the final whistle.

Maybe Primetime is over for now as they get into their full conference play. That QB and Travis Hunter, though, may be Heisman finalists no matter the record. However, those voters look at the schedule too. There is hardly ever a winner from a losing team.

Okay, I'm bored. My boys are off until next week. Can't wait for them to get back at it.

Another Disney related vacation eh. How refreshingly not different. You accidentally said "We" when we all know you really meant just you. I hope the wife and kids are going somewhere more interesting.

All sarcasm aside, which Disney characters do you actually identify with these days. I'm sure that Micky Mouse and Donald Duck have little relevance now and wore out their welcome.

Hey, OSU just trades Playstations and rings for tattoos. We don't have an intricate spy ring traveling across the country.

I was thinking of dressing as Connor Stalions tomorrow night as I take my son Trick or Treating, but I just can't put on a Michigan shirt.

Ohio State might be rated # 1 after playing Wisconsin last week on the road. Marvin Harrison Jr. just came off injured reserve, that had a touchdown down made a big difference in the polls.

I don't smell an upset, it would be nice. Rutgers lost one of their top Defensive players after he busted his hand in the Indiana game, and is now out for the season.

First off congratulations to Dan and OSU on the win!

I saw very tiny bits and pieces of the 4th quarter. A few things that hurt Rutgers, they were handed 30 free yards due to OSU pentailites. You are 4th and goal, take the 3 points instead of going for the TD ( According to my noncoaching position ;>)

Once they gave the ball back to OSU, Marvin Harrison had a great play to help set up the next scoring drive. What sealed the game was being forced to go for it on 4th down again. Once they were stopped it gave OSU the ball back in scoring territory.

Hopefully, Rutgers can pull off another win later this season, and OSU beats Michigan!

It's the universities and the big alumni donors who are the ones to waste this type of money.

I can see huge bonuses for winning coaches AS They are winning....but if you know you will get tens of millions even if you lose...seems like the 'edge' would be gone. It this common?

            Hey Kay,
I do not want to pretend to be an expert on the subject because I am not. But this is what I gather ( and Mark and Dan as well as Don can probably better ascertain than me) but Jimbo won a national championship with Florida State in 2013. Now when I say this, well picture Frank Kern hitting it big with Mass Control some 15 years ago. Same concept.
All of the sudden Frank became a hot commodity, and everyone was clamoring to get Frank's stamp of approval on every IM product that came to market.

Well like I said same concept ,when Jimbo Fisher won that national championship with Florida State in 13' he became a hot commodity and a much sought after figure and everyone including Texas A&M ( because of the rabid fan base there and the University itself as well as the billionaire alumni donors) were eager to go after Jimbo for a head coaching position at all costs.
Because bottom line : a national championship is worth hundreds of millions to a university if not billions of dollars.

So because of all these variables, the University literally threw money at Jimbo who like any sensible human being acted on it. Even though the money thrown at him was not equivalent to his coaching skill set. Not by a long shot. So basically, you got an end product that was incapable of delivering and a University that was caught holding the bad a.k.a Texas A&M.

I may be right or could be wrong but that is the conclusion I have come to.

I'm sure that is true but it's incomprehensible to me. I like your explanation, though it's a bit like betting on a jockey no matter which horse he's riding. If the horse can't keep the pace, the jockey can't pick him up and carrying him across the finish line. Would be really frustrating to be a winning coach with a losing team, wouldn't it?

I'm not a football fan - never have been - but seems people throwing money at the game would know winning comes down to the pure talent you have on the team and how well you organize that talent. I'd say that guy is one smart coach to walk away dragging that parachute.

I have noted that in football the 'glory' seem to last a long time. In many sports and careers, you are only as good as your last performance...in football one or two years in the leagues and you are known as a 'well known player' for life even if you played in a handful of games. One great win (2013?) and you are 'legendary'.

            .
Even if the players are losers. They bring new coaches in to turn the teams around. A good example currently in Pro Football is the Raiders. The head owner fired the coach and staff 2 weeks ago because of a poor start. Now the interim coaching staff is 2-0. The owner now decides whether to keep the current staff or start from scratch at the end of the season. Yet at times, the issues with the team are in the front office.

On a slightly different topic, the Giants signed Daniel Jones to a $160 million 4 year contract in the Off-Season. Now he is hurt again and done for the season. The rumor is his career is already over, playing for the Giants after next season. Sports are results-oriented with most teams having very little patience.

He is still under contract till they decide to trade him. What will probably happen if they are going to move on from him. They will bring a new Quarterback in before next season. Then next year they will probably trade him at some point. Jones probably will be paid a certain percentage whether he plays again or not. Jones also caused issues with other teammates.

The Running back Barkley was jerked around over money because the Giants paid Jones so much. At the start of the season, Barkley took a one-year contract because they did not offer him what he deserved. A lot of contract talk in the NFL I don't understand. Yet Jones is getting paid on the same level as Patrick Mahones!

FSU got hosed. SEC bias at it's highest. I get where the committee was coming from, but it's a slippery slope to exclude an undefeated Power Five conference champion due to injuries.

  • Florida State has been caught a couple of times. One time a guy that was supposed to watch the players do their homework or take a test or something, didn't do their job 100% by the books and as a result the NCAA took away a lot of Bobby's wins. The wins they took away made him the 2nd winningest coach instead of the 1st.

I think they all do it to some extent. The big programs are more under the spotlight and the more success they have on the field, the more people look for a story.

In Michigan's case, I'm not sure what I think. It's obviously wrong but is it cheating to the point of taking away wins, taking away the post season, etc? I say this in as non-bias way as I can. I'd love for them to miss the post season because then FSU might have more of a chance. What are the standards? When is it targeting and when is it old fashion smash mouth football? When do they deserve the death penalty like who SMU? and when is it just a "little" cheating.

See how the investigation plays out. I saw that the NCAA sent people to start doing interviews the other day so hopefully we'll know soon.

I think my bottom line is that if the cheating affects the outcomes of games, that's the most serious. Things like stealing signs (not just accidentally seeing them but going out to get them), star players who aren't eligible, etc. needs serious punishment. Things like not doing your homework isn't cheating, in my opinion, and won't affect the outcome of a game unless it makes an ineligible star eligible.

    Let's see.

It'll all work out before the season ends. I think FSU isn't a #1 team (#4 in first rankings) but if they are playing on all cylinders for 60 minutes, no one can touch them. Initially, the ACC had several ranked teams in the AP poll, but now only 2 are left, so that hurts FSU.

FSU needs to bolt the ACC post haste.

Interesting tidbit about Xichigan: the Purdue game is the first game post-scandal where an opponent had time to mix things up. What happens? Michigan gives up its most points of the season and doesn't cover the spread.

    Hey Mark,
Your fav person got the axe. Jimbo Fisher is no longer head coach at A&M. And the school is on the hook to pay him a buy out of $75mil. Looks like Bimbo could not even get his team to a 10 win season (let alone a national championship like he said was the goal) after being there like 7 seasons.

He is more than set for life so looking to be a head coach somewhere else is probably low on the list for him .

I don't hold grudges as long as my enemies who have hurt me or especially my friends get severely punished 10x more than the harm they've caused. LOL

I've been thinking about that buyout thing too. Not just with that man whose name is forbidden to be spoken but for example Willie Taggert. Willie tried his best to fix that man's screwup and Willie just couldn't figure it out. He was fired within 2 seasons. They didn't even give him 2 full seasons but more like 1 1/2. But the buyout was huge. They are still paying it off. He was losing and hadn't made much, if any, progress within a year. And they still had to pay him off?

Most universities give bonuses for certain achievements like going perfect, winning the conference, going to a bowl, all passing grades for players, and winning a national title. Why not deduct $ for losing or not making progress?

New head coaches normally need a couple of years to get their plan and players in place. If they aren't winning, it's obviously not going to work. That man never had a double digit win season in 7 years!

Anyway, that man isn't hurting. Paying him 7 million a year for several years will let him relax and plan out where he wants to go and screw up next. LOL

Now, if I could find that type of job where I get paid whether or not I do what I was hired to do. Anyone have any ideas? LOL Weatherman would fit the bill - they are typically lying whatever they say.

Rutgers plays Maryland however, the way Rutgers played the last 2 weeks does not look good.

This past Saturday night the Wisconsin game against Nebraska went into overtime. Nebraska kicked a field goal with only 8 seconds left in regulation time. I watched all of the 4th quarter and OT.

The big game being heavily promoted for this weekend is Dan's Ohio State vs Michigan. Go luck with your games everyone!

I get a Word of the Day newsletter from Merriam Webster. Today's word is donnybrook. You think the newsletter editor is a college football fan?

    Good luck, everybody.

I'm about to start pre-gaming for the noon kickoff.

I didn't sleep last night. Got up at 5am and started game prep. Been drinking since 7am. Folks started arriving for kegs and eggs at 8am.

It's tough I know Dan. I Feel for you. Wish I could think of something to say to make you feel better but nothing can really do that. I guess you could say I have been there and done that to a degree much worse than the OSU fans are experiencing.
Thats the story of my life with the Vols

It is what it is. The more rational OSU fanbase all knew what we had in McCord. We just hoped he wouldn't shit the bed in the biggest game of his career, but shit away he did.

Day is now 1-3 against Michigan and 1-6 against top 5 competition. The argument becomes what good is winning 95% of your games if you can't win the big ones?

Congrats to FSU. Welcome to the Top 4.

If the Browns lose to the Broncos today, I'm just going to do nothing but watch Hallmark movies for the next month...

Dan, I didn't get to watch any of the game but once I saw the score, I felt bad for you. I know that knowing someone cares, will soothe your pain. LOL

It used to be that FSU only had one chief rival that we all hated, Florida. Then the 80s showed up and there were all those games of the year between Miami and FSU that the hatred got divided in half. Then we thirded out the hatred with Clemson. I share this just to say that we go through this heart break, heart attacks, premature balding, excessive drinking (for some), and watching Hallmark while eating bon bons LOL three times every year.

I wish there was something I could say to make it better but there isn't. Once a team is caught cheating, I always wonder what else they are doing that they weren't caught on.

Another couple of weeks and we'll be starting the countdown to next season. I can't believe this one is almost over.

Thanks, Mark. I'm pretty much over it. I'm now watching the next tragedy of the weekend: the Browns getting shellacked by the Broncos. Between our qbs and our clown of a headcoach, it's a comedy of errors.

I've been deep into all those Miami-FSU wide rights, lost national championship games, and more. Normally it hurts for a day or two and then I figure there's always next year and I kind of get over it.

This time, though, what the committee did to Florida State will NOT be forgiven or forgotten. You know what I think is the biggest sub travesty in this travesty? Jordan Travis was being booed just a couple years or so ago. We had a couple of losing seasons. But he learned, and clawed, and fought for this team. He became Heisman conversation worthy and brought this team back to where it should've been all along - near the top.

Then he gets hurt. For that freakin committee to put all the blame at his feet is the worst, most cowardly, idiotic, hurtful thing I've can imagine. He did nothing but good. He brought his program back to the top. And then you blame him?

FSU is NOT the same team they were when JT was playing. But it IS a team that knows how to win, even though it looks nasty sometimes.

Give the boys a chance! What happened to the old saying about "on any given Saturday?" Underdogs beat top teams pretty regularly.

This is going to sting a long time. This was the year. Next year a lot of the big players will be in the NFL. It will be a much different team and we're probably going to have to reload and readjust.

    Go Noles! UNCONQUERED!!!!

Don's Rutgers got a big win against the team in south Florida that shall not be named. LOL Congrats!

I'm still in grief. I've been a Noles fan since I was about 14 years old. I was a Boy Scout usher at the home games and from those experiences I was hooked. Got in free just to help folks find their seats and things like that. I think the Orange Bowl is the first bowl game I have dreaded in all these years. It's going to be a bloodbath. A third of the team, and almost all starters, opted-out in way one or another. Why play? Games don't matter, apparently.

    Let's go Noles! Unconquered!!!!

RU played at Yankee Stadium on a nasty rainy day. Final Score 31-24 ! I was busy most of the day, so I only saw the highlights on the news. It's a nice way to finish the season by beating a team (that shall not be named) with a better record.

Instead, I watch former Jets player Joe Flacco and the Browns stamp all over the Jets in Cleveland. The Browns made the playoffs with a week to go in the regular Season.

I have one question what is the deal with soaking the coaches now with Mayonaise or Egg Nogg? The Gatorade splash came about naturally, to an unsuspecting head coach. Now this gimmick the coach just sits in a chair knowing what is about to happen.

I saw a coach doused in mayo last year I think it was. I thought that was totally gross and then realized it's the Duke's Mayo bowl. When FSU was in the Cheezit bowl last year, they got Cheezit's dumped on them.

Weird thing to me but I understand what the bowl organizers are trying to do as far as brand placement.

Washington should have pulled Penix from the game. When Michigan scored the last touchdown. Every time he got up from being hit, you could see the pain on his face. I would not be surprised if he suffered a few broken ribs.

Just my IMHO but at that point, it was just stupid on the coach's part. They were not coming back with 2 minutes left in the game. Penix is probably in a lot of pain today!
