The Keto Diet Experience

I recently switched from getting Amy's vegetarian frozen dinners to Atkins Keto frozen ones. After a week or so this led to a couple of clogged toilet episodes, lol.

However, aside from the meatloaf, all their stuff is quite palatable to eat and quite filling despite the portion sizes being small. I add a slice of healthy bread though to make sure I'm full up.

They are generally low on salt and sugar too. So, for my diabetes, it's good for the low sugar and for my heart, the low sodium. I will alternate my days, one day, frozen dinner, the next, a healthy sandwich with a chopped up apple and grapes. I have some lime tinted flavored mayo on my sandwich that makes it taste real good.

That, aside from the occasional restaurant meal, is my current diet. For something sweet , I have an Atkins chocolate granola bar, or a banana or a zero sugar fruit cup.

Compared with what I used to eat, this is very restrictive but I do not eat much these days and not gotten bored with it yet.

Anyone here, restricted their diet due to health issues. What would you have if you needed to cut back on sugar and salt. You know, the stuff that's in food you really like to eat. Lol.

I went on a 7 day fast - just water.

It literally opened my eyes to a new lifestyle.

The first 3 days were sheer murder.

But when my body hit ketosis (72 hours or so), I felt energized.

It seemed that all the sluggishness and 'brain fog' i sometimes suffer from VAPORIZED.

Another thing that blew me away: when I start something, I kept pounding away at it until it is DONE.

Who knew that fasting will lead to improved WILL POWER and FOCUS

Anyway, I got another energy surge at Day 5

    Amazing experience.

Apparently, according to fairly recent research, going on a fast 'reboots' your body and protein structures in cells are eaten up the cells themselves in a process called AUTOPHAGY

WARNING: This is not for everyone - if you have a health condition or are on medication, DON'T DO IT. Even if you're healthy, it's a good idea to ask your doctor first

        Happy Holidays to you sir.

I had an MRI scan last week. I was called by the doc a few days later. He said the right side of my heart was doing great but the left side was a bit flat by comparison. We discussed the hospital doc trying to get me to use a portable defibrillator after my stent op. I took it and could not get on with it. Got it picked up within 2 weeks. Far too heavy box. decided would just rely on the pills and aspirin.

So the doc I just spoke too talked about the possibility of having an internal one fitted. He asked how I was and I told him I felt fine. My next appointment is not until March 19th so obviously he does not deem it that urgent.

I will put it too him that perhaps another stent in the left side would be a more desirable option if possible. A friend of mine knows a man in his 80's, still working, lifting, has 6 stents in his heart.

In answer to the rest of others comments...

As to the Keto dinners, it's not exclusive and thinking about it, I overpainted a picture of my frequency of use. I go out for careful meals and occasionally cook for myself, enjoy lots of salads, fresh fruit etc.

Keto compared with normal frozen dinners has far less sugar and salt and these are the things I should avoid as a diabetic and having heart problems. All I can say is I have cut back a lot on both and quite accepting of it compared to my prior eating habits.

As for exercising, I should do more, but my feet hurt after a while. I pay for it.

I am glad that you are doing things in moderation and
          not doing anything drastic.

If exercising is difficult for you then you need yoga and
other low impact things like Beverly Exercise.

She comes on TV at the crack of dawn and does old
people things like stretches and leg lifts that you can
          do on your bed.

You can find her on YouTube as well as other types of
          exercise videos.

Are you on the Keto diet, or just eating Keto frozen dinners.

You need to check with your doctor, because my husband was diabetic and
his doctor said that he could not go on the Keto diet.

That was in response to a direct question when I asked the doctor about it.

    Be careful.

I know you guys don't like to cook, but you need to get yourself a Crockpot
or something and learn how to cook simple meals.

Cooking is not that difficult, you just apply heat to a recipe that you made.

I don't understand people who say they do not/cannot cook.

If you eat, you need to know how to cook, it is part of being self-sufficient.

If you don't like cleaning up, there are slow cooker liners that make cleaning
up and storing food really easy.

Whenever I'm done eating whatever I cooked in the Crockpot I take the liner
with the leftovers out, put it inside another bag or bowl, and stick the whole
    thing in the refrigerator.

I also have a Nesco roaster for bigger foods and I love that thing.

I line it with industrial foil or use disposable aluminum roasting pans.

I'd rather eat a roast, chicken, or meatloaf I made myself than some boxed
    frozen dinner.

      Easy meal:

      1 cup rice
      1.66 cups water
      1 tablespoon vegeta
      1 bag frozen veggie mix
      1 block tofu (cubed).
      1 tablespoon oil.

Throw everything in, rice and Vegeta first. Put a lid on. Bring to boil. When it boils, reduce to lowest setting, wait 15 minutes. Eat tasty meal.

      Just saying.

PS Can replace tofu with sausage (the kind you can eat as soon as you paid for it, not the kind you cook... Although, most of them would cook in 15 minutes. But, to be safe, go with the others.)

I agree with Monetize on this...

and I'm saying this after having tried just about every diet fad there is out there.

Not because I need to lose weight, but because I've always been a health nut.

All these fads and diets and this and that are just slick marketing.

They always announce they've discovered a great breakthrough...a hidden gem discovered by some doctor somewhere...a new thing only found in the rain forest or somewhere nobody has ever heard of.

And yet, I always come back to the same conclusion...

eat sensibly. Cut out processed carbs and stuff packed with sugar. Have a well-balanced diet.

As Monetize said, use your crockpot. You can have healthy meals for a lot cheaper...and healthier than the stuff you buy already packaged.

You need carbs, you need protein and you need healthy fats.

The diet industry preys on people who have gotten to the point of needing a quick fix. Those quick fixes never last.

    use your crockpot
    ...and use your oven.

Almost all of our vegetables are roasted in the oven with a bit of olive or avocado oil. We'll put cut up potatoes and carrots on the sheet pan and roast at 400 degrees for 15 minutes, then add asparagus, peppers, onion, broccoli. All the vegetables are FRESH - adding a few herbs here and there gives a variety of flavors and changing up the vegetables does the same. Cook a bunch of them and use the second day with some meat for a meat pie or easy stew.

Go to amazon and buy 2-3 cook books (real books, not kindle)....such as....

    A Man, a Pan, a Plan: 100 delicious one-pan recipes

    30-Minute Heart Healthy Cooking
    Tasty, Healthy, Cheap
    The Cardiac Recovery Cookbook
    Easy 5-Ingredient Healthy Cookbook

Make cooking for yourself your new hobby. Being in ketosis is great for a diet but hard on the kidneys. Don't do extremes in food or diets - fresh is best.

What would you have if you needed to cut back on sugar and salt. You know, the stuff that's in food you really like to eat.

If you have a serious craving for sugar or sweets, eat a dill pickle spear - sounds crazy but sour substitutes for sweet and it works.

Salt was my biggie - and I've found for many foods a squeeze of fresh lemon or lime erases the need for salt. Works well on the roasted veggies, for example.

    Mark - do you exercise?

I can only speak for myself but exercise has been one of the foundational pillars of my Lifestyle. I ran my first 10k when I was 7 and I was totally hooked and from then on I have not missed more than a month of exercise ( at one time). And continue to do it 6 days a week , and Iam 56 now.

I do not mean to brag but if I can do it with the ailments I have to contend with I know many can do it as well.

Nothing quite like a runner's high. ( Endorphins and Serotonin totally immerse your system)

P.S. I will NOTE that doing this exercise does not guarantee a long life into my eighties and nineties but it DOES increase my chances/odds in my favor of potentially living to that age.

If you enjoy it and it makes your day to day life more enjoyable than if it's part of what helps you get to advanced ages while being mobile and healthy. That's a bonus. Avoiding diabetes and delaying the progress of heart disease. Are the things you can do to improve longevity.

There is no perfect human diet as what we eat depends on our lifestyle activity level and basic stat of fitness. Plus age is a factor to.

Keto Paleo vegans and others are developing and making a large number of alternative recipe available to replace the hi fat salt and sugar foods. Filled with chemicals to flavor and preserve the food.

I tried Keto a couple of times in the past & got Keto Flu. Literally it was like the flu so I gave up both times. A year ago I tried again with the goal to lose some belly fat. This time I researched keto flu & hot to get rid of it or avoid.

There are 2 things, take psyllium husk for extra fiber. This will avert both kinds of stool problems. Secondly add electrolytes and atad more salt than usual.

Doing these 2 things allowed me to go Keto without side effects. I used strips to make sure I really was in ketosis & yep sure was.

The best thing about deep Ketosis is the brain effect. I was super alert & sharp. Its nootropic in fact to be ketogenic.

I don't have any diets, the only diet is the joule diet which consists in how many calories you take in and how many calories you have to spend. Try the 12 : 1 system .... until midnight you can eat, of course not fats etc.. but from midnight you don't eat anymore and the first food you eat is lunch, again lunch is not some fat massacre but something normal up to 1700 calories. You can also have carbohydrates, chocolate, dinner until 8 pm .. then only fruit. Your weight will go down.

Exactly - whether you are on a keto diet or intermittent fasting or whatever - it comes down to the calories in and calories out. Carbs are calorie laden - protein tends to increase your metabolism thus burning more calories. When you deprive your body of carbs your body will burn body fat for energy. Diets try to turn the facts into rocket science but the basis is calories (energy) in, and calories (energy) out.

The is no 'bread, donuts and pie' diet (I know, I tried to find one) because there would be no way to pretend it would work. Shame.

The fun part is it isn't that hard to understand. With antibiotics and other medical interventions . along with eliminating starvation . We managed to do a great thing over the last hundred years.

The problem is the antibiotics wipe out beneficial gut Flora the help prevent obesity.then the food people want more of just ends up helping them get fat.

Without adding the foods into the diet the promote healthy gut Flora. It's hard to control weight.but this is a much better struggle than what it replaced

Hey there! I went to Carnivore a little over a year ago and I feel amazing. I have so many food aversions and hormone imbalances that included suffocating anxiety and fatigue. I take a lot of vitamins and drink mixes with vitamins in them. Even though I am Carnivore I do occasionally eat Keto and id say the best thing to do is to do your research on fruits and vegetables since some are better then others. (link deleted per forum rules)

It's more keto and just has a ton of vitamins, it also sometimes helps with your appetite as well since our bodies have learned to always be hungry when we're eating sugar and processed foods. Another thing I do is fast, which is a good option as well, but talk to your doctor first as some individuals have trouble fasting if they have other problems.
Also depending on how much sugar you are cutting out, the withdrawals could give you a headache, I found that the Zevia and the drink mix both helped with the headache and I'm to sure if it was because it was tricking my body into thinking I had sugar or if I just needed some more vitamins and minerals.
    Hope this helps!
I don't have many food ideas since I really just eat meat and butter but another good drink idea that helped my cravings is Zevia. It's zero sugar and they have multiple flavors and it's way better than actual pop.
Hard-boiled eggs are always a good option since they are easy and quick and are good for you and you don't have to salt them.
I am not a professional so this is just my experience

    I hope this helps!

It sounds like you're making thoughtful changes to your diet to better manage your diabetes and heart health. Alternating between Atkins Keto meals and healthy sandwiches with fruits is a smart way to keep your meals interesting and nutritious. If you need other convenient options that fit your dietary restrictions, you might check out royal farms for some fresh choices. How are you feeling with the new diet, and have you noticed any improvements in your health? It's great to hear you're finding ways to enjoy food while sticking to your health goals!
