Can we shutdown PC without ejecting external HD?

Hello warriors.

I am not an expert in computer stuff, but would like to ask for opinions.

Normally if plug in an external HD, we need to eject it before disconnecting it.

But if we turn the PC to 'hibernate' or 'sleep' or 'shutdown' mode without ejecting the external HD first, will there be any side effect to the external HD?

Thanks in advance

presume your external hdd is usb and depending on system you use(vista.window 7 for example) there is a small icon in the taskbar (near your clock) when hovered over mouse you can click "safety remove hdd" if it is a usb one. then you can shut down and it will be ok

normally on shutdown or sleep mode it closes it as a connection anyway if its usb so yeh all the infomation on the hdd will be fine.

Thanks for your inputs Andrew. Regarding your question, yes, through USB.

Yeah I know about the small icon, but in order to eject, we have to close all the opened files in the external HD. But since I am still not finished reading the documents/PDF's/WSO's, I leave them opened so that I can read later on.

But before go to bed or out for lunch or dinner, I would like to standby or sleep the PC, even though the external HD is still not ejected

Is the external HD still in connection? But when I switch the pc back on, all the opened folders in the external HD vanished, only the files remained opened.

If you want to go into sleep mode with files open, then copy them to your local disk first. The USB ports are shut down in hibernation.

Yes, that's the best solution. But the problem is my local HD is almost full. My external HD is way much bigger space

Time for house cleaning. You will find stuff that is not nearly as important as you thought it was. Clear it out, you will be amazed at what really isn't worth keeping.

Thanks for your input my friend.

Yeah, you are right. Sometimes I do that house cleaning. But everytime I clear some space, the space becomes smaller and smaller when my Kaspersky antivirus is running. Wonder what that virus is doing to my pc (laptop) lol

I would set your kasperspy Anti-Virus Depending on your Current Operating system to system scan a few hours later at a time you know your not working or something like that.

Normally When a new update is found To protect your computer The computer reserves some Space to work out how much is needed by Your anti-Virus Softwere for boot-up and shut down reasons also.(Normal in windows Rpc TTl"time to live" Programming which you can see in task manager.

(This is shown when the update is found normally around a 1-4meg of space which is small but i understand very annoying,

As for sleep mode and that, If your hdd is 2.0 Usb then no issues when windows wakes from sleep modes it records all the connections in its memory and just boots up any usb devices like if you was in startup welcome message.

If your really concerned about the files you leave on standbye you simply save them to the hdd as copyof pictures ect, Ill leave the naming up to you or just bookmark the sites for new downloads or use a pen drive for extra support,A cheap Pen drive is about 2 dollars for a 2gig worth of space on ebay. That why its just plug and play and the files are not crowded on your hdd drive.

                Hope that helps

Yank at will. The reason for using an "eject" is to flush any pending buffers to disk. If you haven't been writing to that disk it is not a problem. And as 123bc says, the connection is closed on hibernate or shutdown, so you're fine.

Thanks for your view mate. If without ejecting the external HD (through USB), I shutdown the PC before going to bed. Then early in the morning, I unplug the USB from the PC before turning the PC back on, will that still be ok?

Sometimes I do this because, I want to use the external HD into other PC's.
