The Future Is Depressing... And We're Part of It

From time it pays to do some serious reflection of just what our line of work entails.

The truth is that the days of Ogilvy are long gone and we are all heading into unknown. Or is it really? The future will be dominated by the post-scarcity paradigm. I don't know if many people realize just what that means.

This is why I invite to read an article. It's almost an year old, but it has a nasty knack of becoming more and more actual. Even worse, it's from Cracked and the language would make a biker frown.

Still I really recommend you to read it:

Enjoy

Best regards,
George Cozma

Well, the headline here is depressing...I don't know about the future though.

Some things that may happen are good and some are potentially bad, but to be depressed is a choice. Thanks, though, as I'd completely forgotten about Cracked Magazine.

People that are really very weird can get into sensitive positions and have a tremendous impact on history.

The future is always unknown - but in the end it's what we make it.

Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs they're getting digitally:
I think what they get is often the illusion of needs met. Friends and followers on social media - are they friends...or contacts? Perhaps you gain the appearance of respect, morality, etc online - but appearance is not always reality.

We Internet types are so busy haggling over video games with DRM that we're not grasping the scale of this. We're like a dog who's been cooped up behind a fence his whole life, and now a storm has knocked down the gate. The dog looks out and thinks, "Wow, out there is the front yard!"
No, Fluffy. Out there is the whole world.

The smart folks will use the internet to bring more of the world into their lives - but won't make the virtual world their life.

That's why I hope you never run for office.

But if you do... I'm your partner. Two weird people will have
        an even tremendouser impact.

        Let's do it.

How is that depressing? It's the truth for the most part. I mean really go look in the WSO forum and tell me how many digital products there can't be sold for $2 for infinity?

The only thing that's certain are the opportunities you missed yesterday so stop wasting time thinking about Doom and Gloom and start creating opportunity for yourself before another one passes you by.

You are only as strong as the thoughts you think about on a continuous basis. From that stems ideas and from that opportunity will present itself. You just have to recognize the many opportunities surrounding you every single day.

Gotta love this attitude, but I wasn't talking about your personal future, I was talking about the future of a business, let's call it the persuasion business.

We're all part of it and while it might be healthy to have a positive outlook on everything, missing the context looks to me awfully much like denial. But whatever floats your boat. If you can make a happy living for yourself without ever thinking about the bigger picture, by all means do so.

Well here is actually the point I was trying to make. The online environment is not a neatly compartmentalized department, but rather symptomatic to the situation as a whole.

In United States alone, 8 out 10 people work in the Service Industry. It's not entirely unimaginable to see all these jobs simply vanish, replaced by a considerably cheaper, if not free, alternative.

This is where we come in. By enforcing the artificial scarcity paradigm,we are actively maintaining the status quo. We are actively fighting in the first line of defense to make sure that scenario doesn't happen.

Which leads me to the depressing part. We're on the verge of a fundamental shift and instead of finding a better model to benefit all of mankind, we're sticking to the old one because we are afraid and incapable of coming up with a new one. It is indeed a missed opportunity, but one that is lost on a global scale.

Call me an idealist, but to me that's depressing.

      Best regards,
      George Cozma

You need to lift up your head out of your hands and see what is really going on outside of Romania. Small businesses (under 500 employees) have been the most rapidly growing segment globally for the last four years. In the US for example, there are 20 million small businesses and they are growing at more than 1 million a year. While large companies are downsizing, small business ownership is booming more now than ever before in history.

I have no doubt that's true, but this has always been true. Small and medium enterprises are acknowledged for their capacity to create new jobs. Larger businesses typically grow by incorporating other ventures and then by making them more efficient through the use of an economy of scale (as in removing redundant personnel).

Anyway, since this thread has been consigned to Warrior hell, I must just as well drop it.

          Regards,
          George

Hi, I don't think the future is depressing, it can be a little scary if you are unsure of how things are going work out but all experiences are worth while. (Lovely cat by the way! )
