anyone good with computers?

Hey guys I'm having some computer troubles and I figured instead of looking for a computer forum I'd see if anyone here can help me with my situation.

Basically my computer has 2 hard drives, one is a SSD or whatever its called i have no idea, and the other has 1TB of space. When I bought this computer the company installed windows 7 onto the SSD that only has 30gb of space.

And my problem is that is now my primary hard drive that the computer runs off of with windows and 27MB, yes mega bytes, of free space on it. The reason this is a problem because when I do stuff on my computer, such as watch you tube videos, or try to download some file, it makes some temp folder on the hard drive that has no space. and with only 27mb of free space you can imagine I cant download anything of a sizable amount. and I cant have more then on you tube video opened at the same time.

So really the question is how can I make it so when my computer makes temp files or whatever its doing, it does it on the other hard drive that has all the free space in the world and not on the crummy SSD(WTF?) that has no space on it.

I've tried reinstalling windows onto the other hard drive, after hours of installing windows then trying to get all my programs and stuff back, one of the things I installed said it must restart the computer to complete and once I restarted everything was back to the way it was with windows on small hard drive and no free space.

Thanks guys
Luke

It is advisable for you to use a registry cleaner to give your system a complete scan in order to free up disk space.Just give it a try.

    Luke,

Sadly, zjs answer is probably the easiest. Outside of moving all the stuff from C: to D:, and switching the drives, which might not even be possible with the hardware/BIOS, you probably have no options. And you can't just COPY either! And some software may STILL fail. M/S solution is to REINSTALL windows and all software.

FRANKLY, it is kind of silly. SSDs have a relatively short life, and I imagine that would be WORSE under windows. Hard drives are rated in MTBF. The measure is of TIME. You can pretty much write to them FOREVER as long as there isn't much wear and tear. Of course, wear and tear is a GIVEN with mechanical devices. SSDs are rated based on the number of writes you can do. I guess in theory they could last forever as long as you don't do many writes.

And there are two kinds of flash. One can be written to a LOT more than the other BUT, last I knew, it was ALSO more expensive.

Long story short, things like the swap file, etc... probably should not be on your main drive if that is SSD.

The only reason people put the OS on an ssd is speed, as they are cat quick acess devices.

For the OP, that SSD you got is downright puny, and the guy who put that in there should be shot. Break out your debit card, and go spend about $100 and get a drive twice that size and it should fix you right up.

Your alternative is move the swap files and browser cache onto the 1tb drive.

Here's how to move the swap file.

How to move paging file to another physical hdd in Win7 - Windows 7 Forums

Here's some tutorials on moving the browser cache (it's different for each browser):

      Google

Let me know if either of these help you.

I tried that and defrag and about about 500 MBs free on my SSD

So I tried to change paging files and I think that my computer already put them on my big hard drive by itself, because when I went Control Panel ==> system===> advanced system settings it says none under my SSD and its said system managed under my 1TB HD.

I changed the cache location to my big HD by following Moving your Firefox’s Cache Files, Tweaking Firefox Tips&Tricks « the guide of your webs surfing and I still noticed that my available space till goes down when watching you tube videos but I haven't downloaded anything from browser yet to know if it helped that problem.

Also probably the biggest concern isn't downloading from browser its trying to update my iPhone in iTunes, because when its downloading update it my free space goes down then the download stops and i cant get the update. so not sure if that browser trick will fix that as well or need to do something else

        thanks

          DEFRAG knocks down available writes!!!!!!!!

I did NOT say reinstall! I said move the drive and THEN reinstall, on the NEW C: drive, which is the current D.

System managed ONLY means that the system manages the size.

Cache affects disk usage ONLY for REAL TEMPORARY storage on APPS! Downloads are generally stored to allow incremental downloads.

It isn't SUPPOSED to affect the disk space.

I do not use a firewall or something and I'm good. Just do not go into something you should not be in and you will be fine. All virus stuff you hear about are the most hype. If you're not an idiot with a computer, you'll be fine. Most viruses are focused on mainframe computers and large networks, not the average user. I do not use Norton, McAfee or something and have not for over a year and I have had no problems with my computer.Listen

You may have to move Itunes itself to the other drive. Talk to Apple about how to resolve that problem.

When you download stuff you can download it directly to your large drive. Just create a downloads folder there and you can save anything up to nearly a Terrabyte

If you don't see that option available, in Firefox, go to tools > options > downloads and you can set everything to download there automatically. I have it set to ask me where to download each time.

I have a ssd too and appreciate it. It is 132 GB, Lenovo, and a beautiful piece of machinery. It is simple enough to just store anything not needed on the larger drive. I did look at an HP when I was researching this laptop, but the ssd they had available at that time was about 32 GB.

    Try to disk cleanup.

Here is the process >> go to my computer> right click or C:\ >Select properties > select disk clean up > select all check box > press OK > and follow the preceding instruction.

Sounds like the best option is to upgrade the hard drive, everything else will only offer a short-term solution.
