Has anyone watched the show Human Planet? It's an amazing show that looks how people all across the Earth live and interact with nature. It mostly deals with tribal cultures, but it shows how hard many people have it just trying to get their next meal.

In one episode, a Tibetan man walks 50 miles through hazardous arctic conditions with his young kids, just to take them to school for the year. It takes him a week for each direction.

It's on Animal Planet where I am and narrated by Mike Rowe in the US versions. There's a BBC version too...If you get a chance, give it a look, it's really a great show.

Here's an compilation:

In this one, 3 men chase off a pride of lions from a kill to get their dinner:

Here, two guys are trying to train a golden eagle to hunt and kill fox:

No Kurt, but I was just thinking of you.

On certain Fender Jeff Beck Guitars (His signature guitars), the routing inside underneath the face plate is just a big empty block hollowed out, instead of the individual pickup routings like a standard strat.

I can see two advantages...It makes the guitar lighter, and also for someone like beck who enjoyed trying different pickup configurations, he could just create a configuration, load a face plate and drop it in the big empty square route without much hassle.

But the most interesting part is that, today they build "Squires" that way, fenders lowest line $149.00 guitar...and people criticize it for not being original... or whatever.

This lets you know what Jeff Beck thinks is important in achieving great tone, and apparently , having a big empty space under the face plate doesnt bother him!

Cool faq. he also has standard signatures with regular routing...but that one I found interesting.

    Definitely cool.

Whenever you get discouraged by all the nonsense about who slept with who or what Justin Bieber's latest tweet was, shows like this let you know there's a whole other world out there. It's like a whole other reality, really. A show like this is so good, it actually feels like you're watching fiction if you're so caught up in the mind-numbing 24/7 worthless news reality that so many of us are exposed to all the time.

I agree...There's a guy in Human Planet that creates a tight rope when the river is low, then uses it to get to a little island when the river is raging, just so he can catch a couple of fish to feed his family. At this time of year, the river puts out twice as much water as Niagra Falls. One little slip and he's dead. He's not a thrill seeker looking for some attention, he just wants something for dinner for his family.

And I often think about why so many people focus on things that might be, like UFOs, Big Foot, and ESP, when there are so many awesome things we know are REAL. The photgraphy of Human Planey is spectacular and there are so many things we know exist that are truly wonderful that I think people should spend a little more time appreciating what is, instead of wondering what may be...

Interesting, Kurt. I wish I had a channel out here that picked it up. Guess I just have to continue my education on paper. sigh.

Yeah, it sounds like a nice show. 3 men chased of a PRIDE of LIONS while EATING!?!?!? YIKES! That is one of the top 4 times you probably DON'T want to get near many animals! It is also probably one of the times animals, at least large predators, are LEAST likely to back off.

Oh well, at least they know it is a lot of fresh food.

I don't think ANY adult lion ALONE is likely to simply be intimidated by a man. Of course a loud shot from a gun, or something else, may make them flinch or even leave. Still, I think I would be hesitant to try. It is said that if you encounter a male bear that is alone, you can maybe scare them off by stretching your arms out and yelling. and I HAVE seen bears treed from similar things. Still.... WANNA TRY? They HAVE been known to rip people apart. BTW I said ALONE. They HAVE been known to seem fearless if they are with their mate and/or cubs. I think most animals know about man, and tend to have a second dose of consideration. After all, bears and lions DO easily rip bigger animals apart. So I think they often keep their distance. STILL, don't leave food out in the forest, or an open car!

And yeah, THAT is supposed to be the reason for money! We can learn to do one thing well, and get paid money for it. A person can learn to refine/forge metal. A talent that alone might not seem worth much. Another person can learn to make lures, and use the metal to create hooks. Another person can fish.... And eventually a market can buy the fish or whatever and save them so we can just go in and buy. You see EVERYONE does something different, EERYONE may need something different, and money allows everyone to pay the same thing to people that want something different. Some people go after money simply like those bears go after food. They trespass and may kill you, and only care about what THEY want.

In the full episode, the 3 men are shown actively tracking the lions. They are looking for signs of a lion kill and do this regularly. They do intimidate the lions by acting boldly and confidently, which is really the only "weapon" they use.

The oldest man of the 3 survived a lion attack doing the same thing, so it doesn't always work and there is real danger.

Amazing documentary. The things people do to survive.

Unfortunately, these cultures and ways of living are fading away quickly. Much of the younger generation may pursue education or move to the cities instead of doing whatever their forefathers have always done.
