Stupidest idiot' eBayer sells safe with $26K inside

Longtime eBay seller James Labrecque starts each of his listings with the same warning: "WHAT YOU SEE IS WHAT YOU GET. NOTHING MORE AND NOTHING LESS."

He's half right. Labrecque sold a locked floor safe on the auction site for $122.93, but the buyer found $26,000 cash inside. "I thought it was empty [...] So I put it on eBay" Labrecque told WMC-TV. "I feel like the stupidest idiot in the world."

He has reached out to the Tennessee-based buyer, asking for half of the money. The buyer declined, quoting Labrecque's own caveat back to him.

Hey, at least you got positive feedback!

Q: Would you split the cash with him?

Wow... that is an awesome story. - I'll bet he never sells a safe again w/out opening it first. I might give him a few extra $20s, but no, I wouldn't split the money.

Yeah I'd probably give him a big chunk of the money.

I think it's a bit cruel not giving him any of the cash. I'd probably split it 60/40. I don't like profiting from another person's misfortune. But that's just me.

Question is: If you don't see it...do you still get it?

I think I would give him 50% back, after all buyer got his safe as bought and an extra 13,000$... for only 122$ good bargain,

I really don't know that he deserves half of the money back - as said above, he didn't even know it was there in the first place.

Having said that, I probably would give him half of it back if it were me. I'd probably feel a bit bad for him and his stupid mistake and if I only spent $122 on a safe, I'd be more than happy with that $13000

Maybe it's a publicity stunt or something. He's bound to earn from it one way or another anyway. Maybe nows the time to start selling locked safes on ebay of course after making sure they are empty first.

Well, now that it's public knowledge, the buyer will probably get a tax bill and lose half anyway

I'm more suprised the buyer told the seller.

Coupled with the fact he isn't giving him half, he's basically just stuck two fingers up at him.

If you're going to keep it, keep it quiet.

I'd probably feel obliged to return half, but on the other hand his silly tone in the description might make me think otherwise.

It sounds like that show Storage Wars. People bid on the contents of storage lockers, hoping something valuable will be there. If the seller didn't bother to check if anything was in it -a safe, we're talking about here!- why should the buyer feel obligated to share it?

Why are some people so mean? The buyer should in fact return ALL of the money to the seller. It's not his.

I agree. Unfortunately there is too much greed in this world, as can be evidenced itt.

Wonder why he bothered to tell the seller in the first place if he wasn't going to return any of the money? Strange - maybe he just felt like bragging and no one else would listen.
