I have a few questions in regards to submitting different stuff in regards to writing.

First:

I was curious if anyone knew a list of places that paid for short stories. Or where they can be submitted.

Not just short stories but what about informational & technical writings.

Amazon kindle! There is a big marketplace on Amazon for things like short stories - people buy them and read them on their Kindles

Why don;t you compile your short stories into a book and sell them in Cafepress of Amazon Kindle?

Or if you have enough capability to share tips about writing you can make your own product to sell or membership site about the topic...

I used to be a short story writer too and submit them to offline local magazines or competitions....nothing unusual, though.

Thank you for the directions. I super appreciate it. I'll look into the Amazon Kindle route.

I receive an annual directory called The Best of the Magazine Markets for Writers. The 2012 edition lists 1,857 best freelance markets (plus a variety of other helpful resources for writers).

This resource is available online from writersbookstore.com (I have no affiliation with this business and receive nothing for recommending them).

You can also do Internet searches for freelance writing markets and get lots of places to submit stories and articles for pay.

Additionally, I am an affiliate for a company that provides this service. You will find info and banners for it on my website.

Short stories are a great thing to publish. Then, if it becomes a screenplay, you'll have much more copyright clout and Hollywood won't be able to screw you over so easily as when it starts off as a screenplay (an entertainment lawyer first shared this tidbit with me).

I have been wondering something and since this is in the same thought process.

I recently came across someone who needed a writer & basically they wanted stories that were written along the lines of 3,000-5,000 words but were only willing to pay a penny a word. With out any shout back to the writer. They were saying they would get paid in the long run.

Forgive me if I seem all over, but asking 400-500 dollars for a short story wasn't asking too much, was it? When in reality, they could be potentially making thousands off whatever I have written.

I am trying to figure the best mold to getting paid in regards to writing short stories. Technical writings, etc.

What does that mean? No accreditation to the writer? If so, hasta la vista any future earnings -- ain't gonna happen.

No, that IS a fair payment for a short story, as long as the quality is there. And if you are giving them the full rights to it with no acknowledgement back to you, you should charge a lot more than that.

The biggest challenge for a new, unknown writer, though, is getting a few early pieces published in a recognized, mainstream publication so you can start building your reputation. It takes time and dedication.

No he wanted to pay a penny per word and instead of compensating well. The writer had no credits going to them.

Compile a book of your shorts and self-publish.. definitely the way to go, either with Kindle or POD (print on demand). Why bother with a publisher or risk rejection? DIY.

I agree with your sentiments. Personally, I'd first publish the stories one-by-one, then make an offer for a compilation of the stories. Whet the readers' appetites first.

I would recommend Amazon, Blogger, or your own site as places to submit stories.
