  • Thank goodness! 'Bloody' was only a figure of speech!

Funny you should ask, I read an article yesterday on home remedies checked by doctors, and a dry spoonful of granulated sugar actually does stop hiccups...

Much to their surprise - they found it interrupts the physiology that is creating the hiccup almost immediately...

    doesn't hurt to try...(unless you're diabetic)

And - if you want, you can hum that silly "Mary Poppins" song while you do it!

Not the link I read...but similar result:

use the essential oil of marjoram it's a calming agent. use externally, apply 1-3 drops to affected area. if you want to take internally make sure of the origin as there could be harsh ingredients left over from processing. young living uses steam distillation and other practices for max therapeutic effect. one theory for hiccup is it's a spasm. can also calm oversex in men. as with all remedies, everyone has unique biochemistry and results may vary depending on variables.

The best method i've found is to hold your breathe for a minute or two, it 100% works, but isn't always easy to do. A glass of water maybe help too. And stay away from carbonated stuff for awhile(soda etc...)

You could go out into the front yard, run up & down the street yelling & flinging your arms like a banshee. It won't help cure hiccups, but it would be funny (until the cops show up).

  • Man walks into a bar, ask the bartender for a glass of water.

Bartender pulls out a shotgun, fires a blast - just missing the man.

Man says thank you, puts a tip on the bar and exits...

Why the thank you and the tip?

Take a nap. When you wake up the hiccups will be gone.

I go for the sugar route. About 2 tsp. swallowed dry, repeated as necessary usually stops them.

      Dill pickles?

      Blimey.

I think I'll opt for the running up and down the street beating my chest in great lamentation like a professional wailer from the Middle East, seems to be the most sensible suggestion so far most suited to my rather eccentric personality. (Thanks Yukon)

They stopped finally, thankfully, about 10 minutes ago.

      Cheers ears!

        Mark,

As you're not too far from my son, please wait until weekend to do this so I can spectate.

I only came back to this thread to see what worked, now it looks as though I could have a fun weekend when I go visiting sunny Cornwall.

Fingers in ears and have a friend administer you a full glass of water.

Down the water and your hickups will be gone.

If you're down this way Karen, get in contact, it will be a pleasure to show you around some of the most beautiful scenery. The Cornish cream tea is on me btw.

If you haven't already died (), I also can speak to the effectiveness of eating a spoonful of sugar to end a case of the hiccups. This trick has never failed me!
