Directory Problems and an idea

I wanted to run an idea I have about selling listing on my online directory.

Currently my directory has roughly 10,000 businesses on, which I have put on myself. The directory currently receives over 1,000,000 views a year. It is a directory in the UK that allows people to find business that open on a sunday or emergency hours within the UK.

I was wondering whether ringing companies asking whether or not they would like a free listing to get them hooked, then following up say 1 month later with some stats on how many people we have sent them.

Phone call would go something like this:

"Hi, I have noticed you are open on Sunday and was wondering whether I could put you on my free directory for businesses open on Sunday within the UK. We currently have 1 million views a year and we think you would benefit from this"

"Could I get your email address so that we can send you a like to you new directory listings for you to look at once it is made"

    Once you send it to them make sure the free listing is ultra basic. So much so that it borders on them not wanting it.

    Then have 2-3 upsells.

    A much better basic listing. A really nice listing and then a mega listing that's also featured somehow.

    They then choose which they want, pay you and set it up.

    1 Million views / 10K listings will only give each listing around 100 views or around 8 views a month and not even going to touch the ctr but even at a very high 10% a month that is .8 of a click through, so now with a business owner hat on now, at what price do I put on those numbers and am willing to pay for the ad and what are the benefits of the listing to me?

    lets say a vet for Sunday emergency, if you were to type that in what you would probably see is every vet in the area open on a Sunday in the search results (its Sunday now let me type that in) and that is what you see with paid ads covering the top, and in an emergency I want it fixed now not click around to several pages and sites.

    Lets say you want to charge ? $60 (maybe your thinking hundreds) for the service to list and I had 1 or 2 calls for the year ? from it, I could also run those dollars on adwords get many many eyeballs on the number 1 or 2 spot in a very short space of time, get guaranteed click through or no payment, possibly convert / close many of those call through in an emergency situation, but lets say I only close one because I am crap at closing down, I would still have enough money to the run again the next month and then make 12 times without trying for my same initial spend. So in my busy life say as a emergency vet do I have time for this persons website, who is contacting and why should I take the time out of my day, and why more so should I pay them any money?

    Not saying there is not a way for things to work as where there is a will there is a way, but trying to look at it from the other side and asking would you buy into this helps.

    Some scripts have a claim this listing option then options to upgrade as mentioned above could help, hope all works out for you.
