Calling bigger companies

I dont mind calling local plumbers, electricians and the one man business types..cause most of the time you can speak to them and pitch to them.

But I am not sure how to get in touch with bigger businesses with a bunch of employees etc. any tips?

I'm at the exact same stage. I've been cold-calling one-man bands and getting lots of small deals since I started 5 or 6 months ago. It's been great getting my feet wet but most of them just don't have the budget to pay the fees, both upfront and monthly, that I want to charge. Hoping Michael Hiles is going to help with this, as discussed in another thread about the same. If I can crack this in the next 3 or 4 months this year will be awesome.

Would be interested to hear anyone elses experience on this.

How big a company are we talkin'? I spent years in radio and paid attention when the sales people went after corporate accounts, so I may be able to help. Realize though, that when you pitch to a corporation, you are not pitching to one person, you will probably be pitching to a team, and that requires a polished, well-planned presentation.

Check the book "Selling the Wheel" for some information on what the difference is.

Go to country clubs and get in with the members. Yeah, you've got to know a member, but generally you can hang out for free. EVERY person asks you what you do. And there will be no one there that does what you do or will be able to.

Doctors, lawyers, etc don't tend to attend local seminars, but they will pay to get listed in google in a heartbeat.

All I have done is cold call/approach branch offices or franchisees and get the names of the head honchos and decision makers of headquarters. As a direct result of this, our products and services are in many fast food places, restaurants, retail chains, hotels, insurance, real estate, hospitals, manufacturing companies, transportation companies, moving companies, and even city and state offices etc.

Also, if you work with plumbers, electricians, doctors, lawyers, etc they will usually have contacts in other businesses with whom they have accounts. Doctors usually will have admission privileges to multiple large hospitals and are a goldmine for contact info.

The best way I've found to get to the owner of a big company is a fedex envelope addressed to the owner. Who can resist a fedex?

Beats cold calling and taming gatekeepers 10 to 1. A little expensive but big clients are worth it!
