How Do I get Business Owner's Name???

Hey Warriors!,

I have usually been able to get business owners name and contact info within a few clicks but I have a file of business advertisement clippings that I haven't found Owner Contact info on and I was going to work through that file over the next week or two and I was looking for some input from fellow warriors to see if there are any creative ways other than snooping around on the web-site or calling the business and asking for it, to obtain this info. Let me know what your doing to get this info.... Thanks!

The business owner is not always the decision maker, especially in large companies. When cold calling, my sales reps just calls up and asks who does the ordering of ___________? And go from there. It really is quite easy.

    HI Joshua,

Try searching the states business database, start here Secretary of State Corporation and Business Entity Search Page or call the local agency responsible for business licensing.

Call and ask? Nothing will be more "current" than that.

Tell them your from the IRS " Internet Retail Service". You'll be speaking with the owner in record time. LOL

Go to the State website and search the registered businesses, look for the registering agent. This person is "usually" the business owner.

LOL, please go with option 1 anytime you feel like ruining a receptionist's day and not making a sale.

You like that? That would be epic to try though. I am the kinda guy that would do it though.

You could just say your name is IRIS, then shut the hell up.

L O L !! I used to have a telemarketing collection job and the people would have this recording device thing where you had to state your name or reason for calling FIRST, and then I guess they'd decide to pick up or not (it wasn't a typical answering machine).....

I would always say, "FLOWERS" ... and I'm tellin' ya it damn near worked everytime.

A guy would pick up 'cause he's thinking, "who's sending my ole lady flowers?" and a female would pick up because, well... 'nuff said.

In any event, I would then say, Hi my name is Joseph Flowers with so and so bank.... and get an electronic debit or whatever over the phone...

      Those two are both classic....

I am totally thinking of changing my company name to IRS Marketing Group.

"Making Sure Your Marketing Dollars Don't Get Taxed!"

      or....

"Don't get TAXED by Traditional Marketing Efforts"

"Hi... this is Louie with the IRS. The IRS Marketing Group that is...."

This is what I typically do. But in this particular file, these are the businesses that I couldn't get the owner info this way.

I'm loving the "IRS" and "Flowers" ideas above though. LOL
I don't have a problem calling the businesses up and getting the info that way, it just tends to lead to questions on their end so I was hoping to find a "magic bullet" website or technique to look it up online with out the hassle of calling each one. I didn't really get that with this thread, but I did get a great laugh out of it though. I'm gonna get on the phone now. Thanks for the replies everyone!

Questions is what you want if you can get them, any type is fine. It at least creates engaging conversation!

True, if the businesses ask questions it could be good - it Just slows down my process and changes the posturing dynamic of my specific strategy. I am easily distracted, so I try to stick to my system and unscripted conversations with gatekeepers just really slow me down. I'm sure that I miss opportunities by being so impersonal on the front side of my process, but as a full time firefighter myself, I only have so much time to pull in the deals.

My brother does insurance... he does this thing where he acts like a lawyer...

This is __________ with Gardner Brown and Associates.

They shoot him right through. The name itself just sounds like a law firm.

You didn't mention it, but I'm assuming you tried Manta.com?

Also, I do the same thing with clippings, one things that I do is ask members of my BNI group if they know anyone at the business and would they mind making an introduction?

Sometimes you can get the info from the state website, but that only works if the business name is the same as the operating entity. All franchises will be different from the business name and wont work for the state lookup.

Another things that occasionally works is looking up the business on Yelp. You may luck out and see a Yelp comment containing the owners name "I spoke with the owner, Jane, and she says they have the pizza special every tuesday..."

    Good luck, research is key!

Go to the BBB website, if the business is in there (it does not even have to be accredited), it will list the owner's name a high percentage of the time.

    Hi Joshua,

If you have their website address, you can look up their WHOIS information at networksolutions.com or godaddy.com:

WHOIS Search for Domain Registration Information | Network Solutions
Whois Lookup | Domain Availability - Registration Information

You can also check to see if their local county clerk's office has a website which publicly lists business certificates and often the owner's name. Hope this helps! :-)
