How do you get clients to agree to sign up for a 6 month or 12 month contract?

What are you telling your clients or what tactics are you using to get them to sign up for a 6 month or 12 month contract?

    Clients should be WANTING to have YOU for 12 months...not the other way around...

    The only "tactic" I use is giving them exclusivity for their industry within the area...this way I don't take my proven strategies to their competitors...

    They are more then happy to snap up someone bringing valuable results vs risk having their competition agree to the 12 month exclusivity and then (the original business) loses out.

    Make sense?

        Also, you can offer them the choice; "would you prefer a 12 month contract (at discount) or a 6 month contract (at regular price)?". Many, if not most, will choose 12 months if you have sold them on your service.

    I have businesses on "monthly contract" but there is no contract. They are free to leave, stop paying or re-negotiate and so am I.

    I've had one client halve their monthly commitment and I'm fine with that. We initially had planned all inclusive marketing, but the reality is that they don't have the time to work with me on implementing it (and I've tried). So I'm doing less and they are paying less, but both sides remain happy with the deal.

    On the other hand, a different client doubled their monthly commitment - I do more work and they pay more, both sides remain happy with the deal.

    There is of course a small level of uncertainty but ultimately it works for me.

      Like Tony, I don't commit clients to a contract, I do tell them that without continuing work their website will slip down the rankings due to the activities of their competitors, and I did have one leave but two months later came back because thier website did slip down the rankings!

      It is based on trust, but if you do a good job for them and they see a return, you'll find that 99% will be happy to continue paying, I've even got one client who's been paying me for nearly 3 years now.

    Typically it is price point, always has been. Pay $250 a month or sign a 6 or 12 month retainer for $200 month. I usually give 3-6 months web maintenance as a bonus with web design and it helps to convert them to an annual contract after that.

    All of you are doing it WRONG! You ALWAYS get a contract, it covers your ASS! They are supposed to WANT to pay you for 12 months! You have to make them.

      Of course, you always should have a contract for anything. But in this context it was for pricing terms only.

      Yes, you always need a contract especially with anything Internet related.
