How to reverse engineer citations?

Is there anyway to find out what citations are pointing to a places listing. I don't think they are backlinks as such so you couldn't use yahoo site or SEO spyglass.

Can you just search for the business address in "" in Google?

I want to be able to judge the competition in the top 7 as well as build a list of citation places in the UK

There are a few ways to do that:
1) Check the "More about this place" sections for your competitors. It is located at the bottom of their Place pages.
2) Check them through Local Search Toolkit | Your Local Search Headquarters (it's free)
3) Check them through Whitespark Local Citation Finder for Local SEO (it's free too).

Along the lines of the solid advice rbrshorty gave you, I'd recommend getting your business/client's business listed on the local news station and or newspaper community websites that apply to the areas they serve. Most areas have a handful of these websites operated by the local newspaper/tv stations. They're a real good place to get hyperlocal citations usually.

Just do a search for "yourtown tv station name website" or "yourtown newspaper name website" etc....

But those two resources mentioned above should get you pretty covered!

  Yep, there are basically thousands of places where you could get citations from. The problem is that not all of them Google is crawling and/or picking as citations, which is really sad. However, it should never prevent you from trying something that none of your competitors have succeeded in. The innovators are the ones who change the world after all. A citation in a local newspaper would be a great one if it gets picked by Google. I have seen lawyers getting citations from The NY Times, but these are rare cases in my opinion.
  
  I just wanted to say that you could actually get a citation from anything, it's another topic if Google would pick it, and if yes - how long would it take.
