How much to charge for a HARD keyword

Hi guys,

I need to send a proposal over to a company for a hard keyword in the business niche that gets 18000 exact searches a month in the UK. (this is for the UK).

The keyword is very competitive and I have'nt quoted for a keyword this hard before.

Does anyone have a rough idea what to quote?

Thanks

Matt

What is their cost per lead?

Not sure, they keep their cards close to their chest so it's hard to work out a price for this one.

Is there some clever way to get a competitor to spill?

Unfortunately not! I've tried to get it out of everyone but they are a shrewd bunch!

Check what the top Adwords ad costs per click for the keyword in question and multiply it by the projected number of searches per month in the organic listings.

If we assume that the top website in the organic listing gets 30% of the 18000 searches per month (5400) and let's assume that the CPC for the keyword is $1.05. That comes to $5670 per month. You can now use this as a starting point for working out a quote - I normally quote a down payment plus a monthly cost once the keyword hits the first page.

Do you know your costs for your strategy you plan to implement? I have had a similar time scaling my successful smaller SEO efforts up to more competitive phrases.

Seems if you establish you cost of implementation and ongoing promo, you can mark that up, then compare that number with what you land on from working from the other direction with Adwords numbers. That would give you a strong ballpark to work within.

I was going to spend about £200-400 per month on this keyword and the avg cpc is £13 with 18000 exact searches per month.

        Hi Opportunex,

If the adwords value came to £5000 for the month, would you make a quote at 50% of that cost?

It depends on what each sale/lead is worth to the business.

If each sale is worth £200 (for example) and you quoted £4000 per month, your client would need just 20 sales that month to break even. Easy sell.

£20 per sale and your client needs 200 sales - which is still feasible if the traffic is there but this will be a harder sell. You will need solid references or proof of rankings.

Instead of quoting 50% I would show the client a saving of £1000 per month and quote £4000.

            Great advice opportunix,

I'm going to dig around a bit more to see if I can find out how much a conversion is worth to them.

First, how much would it cost you to rank him?

Once you have that figured, just charge whatever you want on top of that.

    Hope that helps...
