Does Google penalise exit popups on landing pages?

I am running an adwords campaign

My landing page currently has an average conversion (signups) of 18.85% and costing on average £1.27 per signup.

I want to increase my con conversion from 18.85% -> 40%.


Do you think adding an exit popup would help? Would google penalise me?

Like a "Are you sure you don't want to sign up? We dont give your info to third parties" kind of popup

    You can't have popups when using Adwords and Bing as well. That's in their policies. I don't think a popup will help conversions much anyway. If you haven't convinced me on the page in the first place, a popup will not convince me more.

    Try to make it attractive to signup. Also make the signup obvious. Better ads can help too but conversions are mainly a landing page issue. Just a few weeks ago, I told a client to change their LP to an older version as I noticed it was converting better. Conversion rates almost doubled. So while doubling is a big jump, it is possible.

    They don't allow any popup/exit pop in your landing page. You risk the chance of having your adwords account banned due to the Landing Page violations.

    I think using them is a mistake, you'd better give it your best try to make people really want to sign up. Using exit popups is not allowed and besides, if the visitor already said no, then it's probably a no anyway.

    Just tweak your landing page instead. I get around 35% - 40% on mine and i don't have any popups.

    Take away any distractions. If you post a link to it I could have a look and see if I can come up with any improvements.

    Yeah, google adwords doesn't allow using exit pops. You can risk getting your account banned.

    I disagree with almost everyone that posted here.

    I have spoken to google adword reps on the phone regarding this exact issue, and I have been told that exit popups are not a problem and will in fact not even affect quality score.

    Currently, I don't use pop-ups of any kind, but you should be 100% safe doing it based on what I heard straight from Google.

    That Google rep obviously does not know the rules and misinforming advertisers. As a rep, he should either know the major rule policies and if he doesn't know or not sure, consult with someone else or consult the help files. The page about the popup rule is clear.

      To quote the linked page:

      "Websites with pop-ups or interstitial ads that interfere with the user's ability to see the content requested;"

      Exit pop-ups do NOT interfere with the user's ability to see the content requested. The "request" the content by clicking on the ad, and are taken straight to a relevant page with no pop up. It is only when they leave that an exit-offer is given.

      This is what adwords support has told me more than once. Yes, it is possible they are mistaken. But to the OP, I would urge you to trust my opinion and that of Lucid as well, but VERIFY it for yourself by calling that number above and asking.

    Do as adammichael has suggested but, make sure to jot down the reps name and id (if they have one).

    It holds them accountable and gives you something to fall-back on if push comes to shove.
