What I use to explain RSS is using this video on my blog ;D

YouTube - Video: RSS in Plain English

You won't know exactly how it works until you try it. Then you'll go "Ahhhhh"

blogger on how you can use this video:
Put a link near the RSS feed button

Because it's very, VERY likely that a lot of people still don't know
what RSS is and how to use RSS. And because a lot of people
don't know what RSS is, there's a tendency to not want to try it
out.

Thus, you might lose a potential subscriber.

Educate your new visitor on what RSS is and you can potentially
have a new subscriber to your blog.

To value-add, when you have a page on what RSS is, right under
that video, you can do a little bit more explanation and make
sure to include a link to your RSS feed.

Setting it up on a blog or site so people can subscribe.
